  1. That's OK Bubba..We KNOW it gets LONELY up there in the north country... Not that's there's anything WRONG with that...<<wink>>..
  2. I'll bet Doc wears blaze orange when he has sex... You never can be TOO SAFE when you're "in the bush"..<< GRIN >>....
  3. Sounds like a Chinese jockstrap... WELCOME to the forum...
  4. I know several guys who carry a filet knife solely to use as a "bunghole knife" while field dressing.
  5. I figured that you would certainly carry a cutting instrument of some description, Growie, due to all the gardening, carpentry and other outside work that you do.
  6. I have carried a pocketknife all my life...I use it for something EVERY DAY, or nearly so...I can't imagine gardening, working outside, doing chores around the house or property, or most any outdoor activity without having a blade handy to cut a piece of twine, slice some cardboard, whittle a piece of wood, open a can of snuff, or a couple hundred other little tasks. My current knife is a Case XX Sod Buster Junior. It has a 2 3/4" single blade. At 3 3/4" overall, it is slightly larger than ideal for carrying in my pants pocket, but not so big as to be cumbersome.. Some of my friends tell me they don't carry one because they LOSE them..Well, I'm no exception there, I've lost my share over the years..When I lose one I just get another one.. A feller just ain't DRESSED properly unless he has a jacknife in his pocket... Who else feels NAKED unless he/she has a pocketknife..?..
  7. if it was in good condition, it was definitely a good deal.. I did not want to comment before a sale, since it was none of my business as long as I was not involved..
  8. Savage has had a reputation for making very accurate barrels for years.. I'm talking close to 50 years.. The problem was, until a few years ago, the triggers SUCKED as did the Marlins.. Now they have come up with the "accutrigger" which is a very good trigger system.. That makes the current Savage rifles a very good value.. Good, accurate rifles for the $$$.. Same goes for the Marlins..
  9. I sure can't, Dindale... WNY and Growie are the vocabulary experts here..
  10. With bullets from 150 to 180 grains, you'd be hard pressed to see any difference in performance on game. The .308, being a short action, would be slightly shorter and handier assuming equal barrel lengths. Muzzle blast and recoil are comparable.. You might notice the 06 kicking a little more, especially with heavier bullets. I've never laid hands on the Rem 770, but I have shot several Rem 700s and they were all dependable and accurate. Savage, Marlin, TC and Mossberg all make affordable bolt actions, and I have heard good things about all of them. You might spend a little time in the gun shop and handle different models to see which one fits you or appeals to you more than the others..
  11. That's not limited to domestic fruits either.. During the many years that I lived out in the country, I used to hike miles and miles of farm roads, dirt roads, woods roads, etc. every summer..Many of those roads and trails are lined with wild berries.. I enjoyed them all, but my favorites were wild blackberries, picked off the briars and eaten by the HANDFULL...YUM !!..

    Who would

It would certainly dull my interest...I'd still go out a few times, but I'd spend more time fishing and hunting small game and birds.. I turned down an offer to hunt whitetails in Kentucky this year because it was a minimum 130 B&C hunt...I'm just not all that interested in hunting big whitetails..I'd much rather spend my $$$$ on say, a cow elk hunt.

    Who would

Hehehehe..I guess not, Dave... Maybe it's time for my NAP...<<grin>>..

    Who would

Bubba...I enjoy hunting small game and birds (especially waterfowl) more than hunting deer.. However I really LIKE venison, and living where I do,between NY and PA I get 3 or 4 doe permits per year.. Killing deer is a much more efficient way of filling the freezer than shooting ducks, rabbits, squirrels or grouse. BTW.. Those yearling bucks taste just as good as does.. despite what some people might tell you, rutting 2.5 or 3.5 year old bucks don't taste as good as does or 1.5 year old bucks.. I've killed and eaten over 100 deer myself and have also eaten some samples of deer killed by friends..Rutting 2.5 to 3.5 year old bucks taste stronger, and anybody who says they don't is full of s**t or possibly has not had enough experience to know the difference. Notice I said " RUTTING" ..In NY any adult buck I have taken (or eaten some of) was rutting...I have taken adult mule deer bucks and adult caribou well before the rut and never noticed any strong flavor. I suspect a NY adult buck taken before the rut might be as good as a doe or younger buck. The ones I have eaten were taken from mid November to mid December, which is definitely rutting time in NY. Before somebody plays the " meat handling" card, I have processed all my own deer since about 1966, and I have handled them all the same..

    Who would

Heck yes... I have been selling and giving away antlers... I could give a s**t if I ever shot another buck.. 2 or 3 nice adult dolly deers for the freezer for me and my family and I am a happy doobie..
  16. Good point, Sarge... You are talking about things like COMCRUDESLANT... Commander Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic...<<grin>>... ARs are antler restrictions...As an example, a buck may need 3 points of at least one inch on a side to be a legal animal..
  17. Thanks WNY and Growie..I just learned a new word... Now if I can figure out whose DEFINITION is proper...<<grin>>....
  18. I have never heard of agricultural fawn deaths being factored into deer mortality figures..That's not saying it isn't, but I suspect it was higher 30 or 40 years ago when there was MUCH more property in upstate NY involved in actual farming than there is now. Most agricultural fawn deaths occur during haying operations.. In my area of NY there is far less acreage involved in haying than there was when I was a kid..At that time the main land use involved dairy farming, which requires lots of haying. Nowadays, the main land use involves recreation, either vacation parcels or hunting land.. I talked to two of my local friends just last Friday..One of them is 67 and the other is 70. They have both cut acres and acres of hay every year for many years..One guy said he had never killed a fawn while haying.. The other one said he had killed two, co-incidentally both this year. I suspect free running dogs kill more fawns than farm equiptment, and I am SURE that coyotes kill more, at least in my area... In parts of the state with more open farmland and less brush/woods/ scrub the fawn mortality is probably higher..
  19. Good luck on the white, Skillet.. I could guide you to a nice FOX squirrel, tho...I hunted a woodlot during gobbler season this year that had a bunch of them.. I usually do a lot of squirrel hunting in September..Didn't do too much last year due to my Newfoundland moose hunt..I plan to make up for it this year.. I love hunting and eating the little rodents and usually have 3 or 4 dozen in the freezer by deer season..
  20. I grew up in the same post depression era as you did, Fanaddict... I have no problem with that... I suspect many of the posters here may have bent a game law a little in thier youth, if they are honest enough to admit it. Good grief, I am glad I don't have to answer for every illegal thing I did as a young man, but got away with.. Holy mackerel...I'd STILL be in jail..!!...I'm not talking just about game laws, either...
  21. I have a story bout such a thing, but it involves squirrels rather than deer... Two fellows were hunting squirrels in the Ozarks..They came around a bend in the trail and met a fellow who was carrying a dozen dead squirrels...He did not have a gun, bow , slingshot or weapon of any type...As they got closer they noticed that the fellow was INCREDIBLY ugly...So ugly he'd have to sneak up on a puddle to get a drink of water... One of the hunters asked " How did you get all them squirrels, Buddy ?" The homely guy said ' I just UGLY 'em to death. I sneak close to 'em and when they get a good look at my face, they just drop over dead.." The hunter asked " Is there anybody else in your family that can do that ? " The ugly guy said " Well, I took my wife squirrel hunting with me a few times but I had to quit bringin' her... She TEARS 'EM UP too bad.."..

    Racoon

Good luck, Paula... My Daddy was a coon hunter..He always said a coon would walk through a mile of field corn to get to a sweet corn patch...
  23. Hmmmm.. I only have one M700, a Mountain Rifle that I bought about 20 years ago...That is RECENTLY to me.. With the safety ON I can work the bolt, unload the action, etc. My only other Remington bolt action was a 722 in .222 which was made in 1950. With that rifle, you had to release the safety to work the action. So I guess the short answer is NO, your rifle is not defective..I am not sure when the design change occurred..
  24. I agree, Dinsdale... I could have included a couple more rounds that I have used as MERCY killings...38 Special and 12 gauge #4 shot.. How about my Ford F150 ??.. <<grin>>..
