I have always either owned land or lived in a household that owned land... I grew up on a 180 acres in a rural area in Tuscarora in Steuben County...My Mom sold it after my Dad died in '94... When I was married, my ex-wife and I inherited 168 acres from her father, a retired dairy farmer... That went away with my divorce a few years ago, but my fiance just happens to own 100 acres of good hunting land in Tuscarora, near the old homestead where I grew up.... I have lived in this area all my life and I am fortunate to have a number of good friends, in-laws and neighbors who allow me to hunt thier land... That includes my ex-wife, who allows me to hunt the land that I USED to own... ...

I have a whole drawer full of knifes that I have accumulated over the years, but lately I generally carry one of two.. I have a Puma 3" folder that I bought as a gift for my Dad back in the 70,s and then re-inhertited when he died in '94...It takes an edge much faster than my Bucks and holds it nearly as long...When I'm in a mood to carry a sheath kife, I carry a 4" fixed blade Buck Pro-Line zipper...It has extra hard steel and is a real bear to put an edge on, but it came with a lifetime sharpening warranty.. Every summer I send it to Buck and they sharpen it for nothing..The steel is so hard that it stays wicked sharp all season...All it costs me is the price of shipping to them..They even pay the return postage.. The zipper works well, also, for opening body cavities and skinning...My only complaint is it's not a very good bunghole knife..I often carry a small filet knife in my pack for that purpose.... My most treasured knife is a 4" Buck 110 folder that I got for Christmas in 1971... I carried it for years and had to go back several times and paw through the leaves and snow to recover it after I had dressed a deer and left it laying... In September of 1989, I butchered two big Alaska bull moose in one day, using just that 4" buck folder and a 12" Wyoming saw... I have quit carrying it for fear of losing it...It has too much sentimental value and I have plenty of other knives to choose from..

Thanks, Steve..I'll check it out...Maybe I can at least WATCH myself having a good time... I'll Google it up right after my nap...

THANKS, Mizro...!!.... Yeah, that's ME all right.... I was a lot slimmer back in those days... ... Notice those feathers in my hat...??.. Those feathers are from the now extinct Kazooney-zooney bird... The Kazooney-zooney bird is now EXTINCT due to it's strange social habit of flying in ever decreasing concentric circles until it flies up it's own a**hole... Kinda like Democrats... And there is your "fact is stranger than ficton" tidbit for today....

At my age I'd leave the window open just to prove to the neighbors I still CAN do it... ;D ... With my luck they'd probably catch me popping viagras and running my vacuum pump.... :-[ .... Gotta go...I'm tired just thinking about it..Time for my nap...

That's pretty cool, 49...Something to remember... 7 for 7.... Best I ever did was 4 for 4...It was opening day in PA ( Tioga County) and 4 of us had our 4 bucks by noon...Smallest was a spike and biggest was a 120 -ish 10 point...I DO have a picture of that, but it's an old photo and I'm not sure how to get it transferred onto the forum...
-
OK Hunter 49....You made me feel guilty.... :-[ .... No pictures, but here's the real " no BS" story.... He was a 3 point... Shot him with an old M37 Win 12 ga. single shot that had no blueing left on it... I was aiming at his shoulder and hit him right behind the ear.... He had a fork on one side and a spike on the other.. I was so excited I did not realize he had a fork..Dragged him about 200 yards uphill by the spike.. Wore a BLISTER on my hand from the spike sliding out of my hand.. Had him back at the truck before I realized he had a fork on the other side I COULD have been dragging him by.. It was the day after Thanksgiving in 1966...
-
BTW, XX75... What are you packing in that shoulder rig..??
-
Hehehehehe... Something like that.. I bagged him with one of those bonded accu-point monolithic ballistic tip nitro triple shock expandible quadruple fixed blade mono ass kicking stone spear points lashed to the end of my super lightweight laminate ash-hickory- piss elmwood shaft... Only STUNNED the critter, so I had to bash him in the head with a big rock to finish him... He ate good tho... Me and my soulmate at the time ; Buffalo Wallow Woman, ate him up from toenail to antler, except for the hide, which she used to make my moccassins for next couple of years.. Good old Buffalo Wallow Woman...She was one of my FIRST Girlfriends...I can still remember sitting with her down behind old Milo Fernbender's rendering works, picking fleas and ticks from each other as we shared a sixpack of MEISTERBRAU pounders.... I sure do MISS her.....<<sigh>>.... We would probably still be together if she hadn't run off with that damn Jewish vaseline salesman..

Portable shooting bench for under $25.00
Pygmy replied to FULLDRAWXX75's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Very nice... I could see it's use in some hunting applications, also..It's light and portable enough to be thrown in the truck and then set up in a good vantage point in the field... I can think of several good places for one right off the bat.. -
Nice pictures, guys.... I'd like to show you a picture of my first deer, but I can't remember which cave wall I drew it on... : ....

I just did a similar thread Feb 16th... No problem..Just thought I'd let you know and save some of us some typing.. ...

Cool post, XX75... I have always been interested in terminal ballistics, and I have saved some recovered projectiles over the years...I have a small collection of them..They are to me, treasured momentos from the hunt....I have a 7mm 160 grain Nosler partition that killedmy first Alaska bull moose.. I have a Noexcuses 460 grain conical that killed a 6x6 Colorado bull elk...I have a Barnes X 250 grain 9.3 MM that killed a caribou, plus a number of other rifle, shotgun and MZ projectiles that I have recovered from game I have taken...I shot Winchester BRI standard velocity sabot slugs for years, and killed lots of deer with them and only ever recovered one... Remington corelocts have always had a great reputation as a game bullet...Many of my hunting buddies who use factory loads swear by them..

Don't give up, Singl Shot.. I went through the same thing..I would try it, get frustrated and go back to my manual knife... It's like any other skill..It takes some practice to become efficient.. It will pay off however, in time saved once you get the hang of it, especially if you do a lot of panfishing and have large numbers of fish to do.... If you know someone who is experienced with the electric knife, it might help to watch them in action..
-
Who uses an electric knife for fileting your catch..?? For years I have used a conventional knife and I always have taken pride in doing a clean job of fileting without wasting meat.... I tried an electric knife a few years back, but I felt I wasted too much meat... Well, after meeting a couple of friends who are very proficient with the electric knife, I have worked on my technique and I feel I have developed the skill to do a pretty clean job with the electric... And it is SOOO much faster to use, especially if you have a cooler full of panfish, such as bluegills or perch.... I still use my conventional knife if I happen to have just a couple of larger fish to do, but for large numbers of smaller fish, the electric is the way to go...

I agree with Bubba on this...The 25-06 is an excellent deer round with proper bullets... YES...Many 25 cal bullets are very rough on the eatin' meat, especially the 100 grain and lighter ones.. Even MORE so if you hit a shoulder or a ham.. However, the same applies to many .270 bullets in 100 to 130 grain, and many 7mm and .30 cal bullets, especially when driven at magnum velocities.. And as Bubba said, those damn sabot pistol bullets fired from muzzleloaders at velocities far beyond what they are designed for are literal BOMBS also.. If I were still using a 25-06, I'd use a stoutly constructed bullet such as a Barnes X or a Nosler partition or accubond or a swift A-frame..

Steve.. You were the one who introduced politics into the turkey hunting forum... I only responded because you started it.. I really ... (( YAWN ))... don't care to discuss it anymore.. I have no problem with people discussing politics, but that is not why I frequent these forums.. It ain't no FUN for me , although I realize that some folks THRIVE on such stuff...

They make a model for liberal hunters too, Steve... It's called " Miss Pinko".... No matter what way you set it up, the head always swivels to the LEFT... ...

Sorry G-man... My musty old memory caused me to exaggerate somewhat... The 44 mag's velocity is NOT double that of the .45 LC although it is still considerably higher... About 300-400 FPS faster with similar bullet weights, which is certainly significant, but nowhere near double.... I don't want to spread false info here.... :-[ ....
-
I don't think so, G-man , assuming your buddie's carbine is a 44 mag. I don't have the ballistic tables right at hand, but I believe the velocity of the .44 mag is nearly DOUBLE that of the .45 long colt, with similar bullet weights... Even then, the .44 mag is rather anemic compared to most popular centerfire deer rounds.. I think that the .45 LC would be a 50-60 yard cartridge at best, and then it is marginal..

I have good luck with Miss Bobblehead... The movement from a light breeze seems to make a difference... I also carry a couple of Sceery inflatables...They look kind of chintzy when closly inspected, but look remarkably authentic from a distance of a few yards... I prefer head down feeder decoys...The head up type seem more likely to spook birds.. I have had less gobblers spook from the dekes since I switched to the head down type...

The 120 and 130 grain bullets are yours, Bubba...PM sent..
