+1 No they aren't coming and it wouldn't surprise me if they were eliminated from the several areas where they are in effect also. A good many hunters in those units can't even get a doe permit and then are told that they can't kill a buck unless it's 3 points on one side. This won't swing for long, this I can assure anyone!!
-
Doe, it's the guys who know their limitations, and can make fun of themselves who make the best hunters. The know-it-alls out there, and the hunting world has PLENTY of them, are nothing more than hot air!!
-
I was joking, notice the "lol" at the end of the sentence. Yeah, I know you were, but we all know that there are a good many hunters out there who actually think they can kill at unbelievable distances just because their rifles can shoot a long ways. Most can't shoot too well at 100 yards, never mind 500 or more!
-
You bring up a good point, Doe. I never shot at anything at 500 yards not even at a target. Exactly how do people know where they are hitting a target at 500 yards or more? Heck, those bullet holes look pretty small even at 100 yards when you look at them thru a scope set at 9X. I know spotting scopes help at the shorter distances, but at 500 yards or more, can they see those small bullet holes?? I'm sure these shooters don't want to walk 500 yards or more after every few shots to see where they are hitting either. Heck, if they were so willing to do some walking, then they wouldn't need to be shooting at critters at 500 yards or more! They could just stalk closer!!
-
The trajectory of this cartridge isn't all that flat compared to some newer cartridges out there. Yeah, it still packs a good punch out at 300 yards and above, but it really doesn't shoot any flatter than a 7mm mag or even a .270 at those distances. I also don't think anyone has any business shooting at game past 300 yards. Sure game could be killed at greater distances, but I think the reality is that most will screw up way more times than they will make a kill. They will never admit it, though.
-
I have a .338 win mag I bought a good many years ago now. Never hunted anything with it. It won't kill a deer any deader than a .270, 30-06, .308, etc. Plus, the cheapest ammo you can get for it probably runs you close to $50 a box these days. If you want the premium stuff it's way more. No way is this the perfect deer gun in my opinion.

Yeah, and in a couple of units where AR's are in effect in NYS chances of getting a doe permit are slim to none. I guess these hunters will be eating their tags instead?

All I KNOW is that I see way bigger bucks being taken in non AR areas around NYS. Plus the guys who don't care what type of buck they shoot can still take the spike of forkhorn if they so desire. That is how it should be.

Even with these idiots out there, the number of shooting accidents while hunting is very small. I don't see how AR's would stop idiots from shooting, or help improve the accident rate which is already small. People want AR's because they think it will produce more and bigger bucks. That is the REAL reason they want them. Anything else they may say about AR's is surely not the main reason they want them implemented. Nice try, though.

Do you wear Orange? If so why? If not Why not? :)
steve863 replied to TheHunter's topic in General Hunting
This is a very good point. Absolutely NO way that any of us can be absolutely sure, most especially in the heat of the moment when we concentrate on making a clean kill and surely aren't thinking of what might be behind it. I think only a liar would tell us that they knew with absolute certainty that nothing else could possibly be behind our target. I would have NO problem with a law that made blaze orange mandatory. Yeah, most people wear it, but some don't and that puts everyone at risk. I don't buy the theory that this gives up our rights. As we all know hunting is not a free for all where we do whatever we want and shoot whatever we want. We already have to follow many rules. One more, especially one that everyone pretty much agrees is only common sense, would not take away anyone's rights in my opinion. Like others I am absolutely amazed when I see other hunters not wearing any blaze orange during gun season. Just can't understand it for a second. I guess these people have a lot of trust in their fellow man. I sure as heck, DON'T! -
Two 50 grain pellets are more than enough to push that type of bullet and more than enough power to kill a deer. I have a Wolf also, although it's the older model without the quick release breach plug. I use 2 triple 7 pellets and get darned good accuracy with several different bullets from this little inexpensive gun. Haven't hunted much with it in the 3 years I've owned it, but like it very much. My uncle's T/C Encore that cost about 4 times more and seems to weigh about 10 pounds more doesn't shoot any better than this cheap little gun either.
-
Some of the shots look extremely bad to me, and the deer seem to go a good ways without looking like they are seriously hurt. Yet, in most instances they will find it and claim that the deer didn't go 100 yards. I often wonder if they have another hunter with a rifle stationed close by just in case of these poor bow shots. I wouldn't pass anything by them, that's for sure. For hunters who are considered "pro staff" whatever the heck that means, these TV hunters surely DO make a good many lousy shots.
-
If a hunter was to walk up to his stand in daylight and saw the bear up there, would it be considered ethical to shoot at him from the ground?? LOL Bowhunters practice shooting at downward angles, maybe they should also start practicing upwards? LOL
-
I've heard the same about them, but have never had the opportunity to shoot a deer with them to see for myself. They are accurate, though. I don't buy their claim about loading easy, however. In my gun they don't load any easier than any other bullet I've tried. I can get a second bullet down the barrel without swabbing, but you can just forget about a third.
-
No. Tried it for a while a number of years ago without any luck. Got tired of the antlers stabbing me in the back thru my backpack so I gave them up! Of course some people will tell you that it worked for them, but I'm sure they will never know just how many deer they scared off by rattling either!
-
I'm on vacation at the lake so I gave it a try. Had my wife videotape it all. I guess it will take a bit of practice. I surely don't want to be busted for trespassing if I land on someone else's land!!

Can't believe what some people would do to try to kill a deer! If someone told me I had to dangle from a tree like that, I would just get a parachute and rent a plane then skydive to my hunting spot. Once I was close to the ground the parachute would get all tangled up in the trees and I would pretty much have the same dangling set up as with this sling system with the added advantage of having the parachute opened above me protecting me from rain and snow. I am sure someone could market parachutes in the assorted popular camo patterns. The other advantage to the parachute method would be that I wouldn't contaminate the area with my scent while walking in, I would just be dropping in from the sky!

At least Jim Shockey doesn't have a southern accent. It seems to me that the deeper the southern accent, the more staged and fake the hunting show will be. More likely to be a hunt inside a pen also. I think the southern boys just like it to be easy when it comes to hunting(and probably most other things also). Heck, I hunted in Alabama once and they don't even gut deer themselves down there. They just throw them into the truck and take them to the meat processors with guts in them and all!

Quality affordable scopes? What do you use?
steve863 replied to burmjohn's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I think Leupold makes the most rugged and reliable scopes. I've had a Vari-X II model on my rifle for 23 seasons now and year in and year out it's zero has barely moved an inch. Can't say that I could ask for more from a scope. They are getting a bit expensive as of late, though. I have to say that the clearest scope I have ever looked thru is the Zeiss Conquest. I haven't seen any scope that comes close, not even the very expensive Swarovski's. You can get a Zeiss Conquest 3-9X for about $400 which I think is a great price for what you get. Most of the Leupold's are close to or above this price already. The Leupold's are proven for ruggedness and reliability, but the Zeiss has them beat in clarity by a good margin in my opinion. -
Wow, alligators!! I don't think they can survive very long in NYS, however. I think the mountain lions will eat them up before they could get a real foot hold in the state. LOL

I just love how in both articles the talk turned into how it works in Texas. Who gives a hoot about Texas where the majority of deer are behind fences these days. That is not what we have here in NYS. Big bucks can be had without AR's or any of this QDM mumbo jumbo. Get out and hunt hard and you might get that big buck!
