I have several big game rifles, but have used only a Remington 700 BDL in .270 win for the last 26 seasons.
-
I'm trying to figure out why you posted the video?? Like you say, it don't prove anything. Were the barrels of these rifles all obstructed the same exact way?? I highly doubt a completely obstructed barrel from a european rifle would hold up any better than anyone elses. There is absolutely NO way that a completely obstructed barrel wouldn't even create a bulge on the barrel like happened here with some of the european guns. You can believe this video if you want, but I surely won't.

Does Sako supply mounts with the gun? He acquired this gun with these mounts, so I'm not sure if they came with the rifle or not, but they will pretty much fit only very long scopes. I would think they would supply the gun with a more standard ring distance which would fit a wider variety of scopes. In comparison to a wood stocked Browning A-bolt, a Remington 700 BDL, or Ruger M77, the Sako was noticeably heavier. I know the barrel is an inch or two longer, but that shouldn't make too much of a difference. The stock is definitely where the weight differences seems to be. I know there are lighter versions of the Sako available, though. I honestly don't think you can beat the American manufacturers for quality and price. Some guys like the shiny finishes on those european guns, but in general they won't outshoot the American guns. Accuracy has just been getting better and better, even in inexpensive guns, so how much more do shooters need, I don't know.

My uncle acquired a used but unfired Sako Finnbear last year. Nice gun, nice wood, but surely wouldn't spend the money for a brand new one. Also a bit heavy for my taste. Accuracy was fine, but lots of guns out there these days that shoot outstanding for a lot less money. What I didn't like the most about it was the Sako scope mounts. Too wide of a distance between the rings to fit many scopes. I like the integral mounting system they have, but don't understand why the distance needs to be so wide. They do have some offset rings available, but the price tag is something like $150 for them. Not my cup of tea when one can get scores of different mounts for most other guns.

Hunter Divisivenessand its Effect upon the future of Hunting

:What's the point? Your obiously looking for any angle to keep speading the hate. You think this is hate? Hate is not a very nice word, and I honestly don't know if I hate anyone in all seriousness. I don't know Nugent personally, so how could I really hate him? I do think he is a lousy representative of hunters from what I have seen and heard of him and have never considered him a representative of who I am as a hunter. I surely won't shy away from admitting that and would say this to hunters and non-hunters alike any day of the week. If you perceive that as hate, so be it. I will take your advice, Doe, and not say anything else about him in this thread. It's seems like there are a lot of sensitive souls out there who can't even handle a joke if it invokes a certain individuals name. -

Hunter Divisivenessand its Effect upon the future of Hunting
steve863 replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
I think people in cities generally don't like hunting, basically because they don't know a thing about it, and because the national media in general is certainly not pro-hunting. But even with all this, the rabid anti-hunting crowd has honestly gotten NOTHING done to get it anywhere near abolished in NYS or anywhere else. They are extremists and extremists on any side of the spectrum will not get the attention of the majority of people who in general are a lot closer to the center. Doe, your posts are hilarious! Maybe they could build us a few treestands with that soap box material?? Heck, we could probably bring our entire families up on these stands during deer season. Even a few overweight cousins and sister-in-laws!! -

Depends on what this years annual sacrifice is. Goats are getting hard to find. Maybe we could get Ted Nugent to strum a few chords on his electric guitar while we all sing "Kumbaya" around that campfire?? He can then howl like a wolf after we are done to give us that spirit of the wild feeling! -
Hunter Divisivenessand its Effect upon the future of Hunting

You know, I've been hearing this a lot as of late. Hunters saying that we shouldn't argue or debate amongst ourselves and such. I don't agree. I don't think anything is ever accomplished without some form of dialogue between people. The rabid anti-hunters are anti-hunting no matter what we say on sites like this. I doubt they search thru threads on forums such as this looking for more things to use against us. Even with the anti-hunting groups in this country hunting is STILL legal in all the states of this country. They have done mighty little to persuade the majority of people that hunting should be abolished. Yes, maybe they have won an isolated victory or two, but in general they have done little to keep us from hunting if we desire to. In general there are more hunting opportunities today, with more game available than there was 50 years ago even with these anti-hunting groups out there. The states want revenue to manage wildlife and they know HUNTERS are the ones who give them this revenue and NOT PETA and similar groups, and that is why hunting is no where close to being abolished. Yes, there are less people hunting and fewer young people who want to hunt. That is because of various different reasons and surely not because of any in fighting we do. In general hunters have a lot of passion for there pastime, and it's only natural that they would want to debate issues and sometimes things can get a little heated. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Like I said, nothing ever gets resolved without some debate. -
You might be right there! Although there are some similarities to those huge genetically engineered bucks and the girls with the enhanced boobs! LOL

Sure, everyone will put their own spin on it, but I surely will believe the PA game department take on it before I will believe anything anyone has written in North American Whitetail magazine where all they talk about is big bucks and how to grow them bigger. The PA department has stated that bucks now are NO bigger than they were before AR's. That is enough proof for me that AR's don't work.

That's nice. These hunting and shooting forums are now trying to cover things up for him? How is this any better than what the liberal leaning media typically tries to do? All sides are corrupt in their own ways, if you ask me.
-
Ding, ding, ding, I think we have a winner!! You don't get any prizes for your lucky guess, however!
-
Come on now, some will try to find anything to defend him. I wouldn't disagree that a guide, if he had one, should have pointed out what is legal and what's not. But, the bottom line is that this is Nugent's TV show, and Nugent is the one defending hunting and gun rights all over the airwaves, so ultimately it's he who will get the heat here, and rightfully so. If it were some liberal anti-gun or anti-hunting person who was caught doing something, it would be safe to say that Nugent would surely not be giving them the benefit of the doubt, even if there were some legitimate doubt. He made his bed, now he has to sleep in it I'm afraid.

QDM was developed by biologists who were paid by trophy hunters to come up with a theory that would hopefully grow them bigger bucks. That is pretty much it in a nutshell. I am sure the QDM proponents will come up with all sort of mumbo jumbo that it's not, but I for one don't buy it for a second and neither do many other reasonable thinking hunters out there. I have been hunting LONG enough to know that big antlers and the greed for them drive some to do some crazy and irrational things. QDM is just one example. In the scheme of deer in nature, it does absolutely NOTHING for them. Any possible benefits from it is for the hunter only.
-
Of course it's not good publicity. I had a hunch this would be happening to Nugent sooner than later. Nugent has always been in the face of everyone who is against hunting and guns, smack talking them down and almost daring them to prove him wrong. What does anyone expect the other side to do now that he got caught with his pants down?? They will take every opportunity to bash him and unfortunately all of us hunters too. THAT is why we should be careful who we have representing us. Nugent was a time bomb waiting to go off. Anyone who couldn't see that I feel sorry for. No one is perfect, that is for sure, but someone as vocal and daring on the national stage representing hunting and shooting better make darned sure he doesn't get caught in a gun or hunting related incident, because it will be real bad news for him and those he claims to represent.
-
Exactly! He has not only done hunting shows, but has been on other mainstream TV and radio programs talking about law and order and what he would do to lawbreakers. Generally you DON'T see the other hunting celebrities doing such things, so NUGENT stepped in a bigger pile of dung here than most of the other celebrities who may have broken the law since the others weren't known to anyone other than hunters. He screwed up big time here, and the other side now has even more proof that not all hunters and gun owners are always law abiding citizens. All they need to do is point to him. If he who claims to be our representative is dumb enough to break laws, why should the public then trust any one of us??
-
According to NYS law it's illegal to bait, but you CAN put out food plots, so technically baiting is legal with some things, but not with others. Nugent has no excuse. He tells everyone who wants to listen to him how American hunters and shooters are law abiding people and anyone who might have any doubts he has little use for. He should make doubly sure that he upholds this image he touts about hunters and shooters, most especially since he is in the limelight and acts as a representative for them. He has failed on all counts.
-
Buckstop, I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets a kick out of this law. It really doesn't take a PhD to figure out what their saying doesn't make much sense! I guess it's the perfect law for some hunters, though. Food plot proponents would spin it everyway and upside down anyway, so the DEC might as well write the law in a senseless fashion. LOL
-
Nope, I don't like him. I find it quite interesting and revealing that a lot of hunters out there do. I guess that doesn't say much for these hunters either. This incident just proves that he talks a good story, but does otherwise, and this isn't the only time either. Yes, we all can make a mistake and can even get a game violation if we are not careful or simply just by an oversight, but no one will tell me that NUGENT has any excuse here. Absolutely NO reason for someone of his stature and connections not to know what the law is in the area where he is hunting and even filming the hunt. I'm sure he will have other defenders here also, but I for one ain't going to buy any of it. Nugent would be the first one to throw something into the face of someone he thought was on the wrong side of what he supposedly believed. He's the guy with egg on his face now and hopefully will have to face some of the music. I surely won't be burying my head in the sand like some other hunters like to when it comes to criticizing our own. If they deserve criticism, they will get it.
-
I just love this law. They say we aren't allowed to attract wildlife by putting food out for them, but in the next paragraph say that food plots are OK. Absolutely makes NO sense when you really think about it. Like food plots aren't food and don't attract deer??

I'm liking this forum because of less moderation. If you said anything against AR's or QDM in the old forum, you were immediately on someone's $#!+ list. So far, so good here and I see very little bickering. Besides, what's wrong with a debate anyway?? -
No kidding, Doe! And those ear tags not only had the price, but the deers serial number, complete family history, and how many viles of sperm samples they have in storage from him. It's QDM, after all!! LOL
-
If there's any hunting celebrity who makes my blood boil, it's Nugent! I know a lot of hunters out there seem to idolize this guy. Why? I surely will never know! He is exactly the type that we don't need portraying hunters. He seems to think that he is a spokesman for hunters in this country, and what does he go out and do? Gets himself a rather serious game violation, that's what!! I don't like the fact that this might tarnish the hunters image even more in the eyes of the non-hunting public, but I can't say I feel sorry for the idiot one tiny bit! Jim Zumbo was practically black listed from the hunting industry a couple of years ago, and he surely didn't get busted for a game violation either. If the same doesn't happen to this creep for this incident, I will know that something isn't right with the industry AND the hunters who look up to this guy!

Tried to get a tag for unit 4P but NO luck this year. Had one the last 2 years, but looks like my luck ran out. I guess I will be hunting during muzzleloader season for that doe. Don't exactly love the idea of having to hunt that late in the year, but it looks like that will be my only option. Skipped ML season last year altogether since I had gotten a buck and doe during the regular season.
