All I need is Phade to tell me that it's OK to shoot, even if it isn't, and I'll fire away!!

Hard to tell what the weather is here where I am. There's a big antlered buck peeking thru my window and I can't see the sky. I've had to turn the lights on in the room because he is blocking all the window light coming thru. F^ing AR's has made all the bucks so damned big that it's making me waste money on electricity!

Not that I really care. Just starting a thread that doesn't pertain to anything hunting related, as per Growalot's request in the " Disturbing article in NY Outdoor News" thread ! LOL

What would happen if the kid had an accident with the bb gun or .22 that you gave him? Be it inflicting injury to himself or to someone else or someones property?? In these lawsuit happy days I don't think it would be pretty. You may then end up getting all your guns confiscated for thinking that your kid is responsible enough to handle guns on his own. Would you go against your kid and say that he took the guns without permission to save your own butts?

I think you are underestimating it's abilities. No, it's not a Mauser or an M1, but they work. The one I bought for next to nothing shoots a lot better than I expected. It is definitely accurate enough for deer hunting and without a doubt has minute of MAN accuracy. Where else can you buy a rifle in a high powered caliber for the money you can buy one of these?? People should also not forget that plenty of Germans fell to the 7.62X54R along with other calibers, before they think that only the .30-06 put them down.

I love it how you are trying to justify all this. NO, the kid probably won't become a serial killer, and YES, some kids who are raised by screwed up parents do make it in life. But if you look at those people who do end up having a screwed up life. A very high percentage of them are products of SCREWED up parenting. It don't matter if you are rich or poor either. You can be a SCREWED up parent in either case. Of course, just like many alcoholics and drug addicts, most parents will never be able to admit or even realize that they are SCREWED up. In their minds they know it all and how dare someone tell them that they are doing things wrong. This is exactly the attitude that we are seeing in this thread. Have a nice day.

I'll be the first one to say that shooting a deer a few minutes before or after shooting hours is not a big deal. Unless you are hunting public land that is patrolled heavily, you will NEVER get caught. It may be legally wrong, but to me it's not the end of the world. This issue here is completely different in my opinion. What you are doing is getting a youngster to violate the law. In my book this is a very WRONG way to start a kid out. If anything one should strive to observe all laws when mentoring a kid. If you tell him shooting a deer before the legal age is OK, next thing you know he will think shooting one out of season is OK, too. Just WRONG any way you look at it. You may not like the law, but to get a youngster implicated in violating the law does not speak much for your parenting/mentoring abilities. I'm sure this kind of stuff is done all the time, but in no way is it the right way to be teaching a kid. You fellas who disagree can flame away all you want, but you are not going to convince me of anything different. If you want to do this kind of stuff with your kid, obviously none of us can stop you. But it's still WRONG.

If you weren't so stubborn, maybe you could try one and see for yourself? There are NO flies on the 7.62X54.

If they stopped all Buck hunting.

If the DEC told me I was guaranteed a doe permit or two during gun season for the rest of my days I'd be a happy camper. That is not the case for me now, and I also have AR's in my area. I could give a crap about a deer wearing antlers just to boost my ego and to have something to brag about. I'd gladly trade for this doe only scenario over what I have now. -
I think you got snookered!!! LOL

JoeHunter, just to add some salt to the wound, I purchased a Russian made Mosin-Nagant in 7.62X54 a couple of years back. Got it from Cabelas and it cost me a whopping $25 after using a few Cabelas points. Never used it to hunt, but would NOT have any issues hunting with it if I had to. Would take that round over the .30-30 any day. Definitely accurate enough out to 100 yards to bring down a deer with its open sights. That's as far as I'd want to shoot with any open sighted gun anyway. Could finish the deer off with it's bayonet if I had to, and not waste a bullet. LOL

Looks like there may just be statewide Antler Restricts.

Oh how sad! You would have settled for a half racked 5.5 year old. We really feel your pain. -

That there is the truth. QDM is TROPHY management and nothing more. -
I enjoy venison and that is probably the biggest reason I hunt, but if hunting ever gets to the point where it's only behind a fence, that will be the end of hunting for me. Maybe I'll go to one of these farms and even get me some venison, but I'll just pay the farmer to go out and slaughter a deer for me to take home. I sure as hell won't pretend that I actually hunted one down in a place like that just to brag that I shot something myself while out "hunting". Absolutely NO point in that. I'd be lying to myself more than to anyone else.

Nothing would happen, because they'd never share their big buck meccas. That's the reason we have 23 page threads around here. Hunting has become the MOST selfish pastime that I could think of. We are all hunting buddies as long as I don't hunt where you do. That's become the name of the game I am sorry to say. -

Killing a young buck may be easier in some locations than others, but I'd like to see the guy who could absolutely put one down in ANY location in a given day or two of hunting time. That is easier said than done. Those who think that they could do this in ANY location have either not hunted long enough or have hunted their whole careers in locations where deer were plentiful and seen every time out. That is surely NOT the case for a lot of hunters out there. -
If one gets busted by a DEC officer for killing a 1.5 year old, maybe they can use the excuse that it will be put in the freezer and not be eaten for a year, so technically it can be considered a 2.5 year old?? You can tell him that you let it age in your freezer! Worth a try anyway. LOL

He's also lobbying the DEC to allow only those with a mullet to hunt. He'd then have all the hunting in NYS to himself since he's the only remaining human on planet earth with a mullet. The rest of us could live with AR's, but mullets, NO way Jose! -

Since at least 3 points are of such importance, maybe hunters should take the bucks temperature rectally before they shoot it? The only bucks that will be allowed to get shot are the ones with a temperature at least 3 points above normal. The DEC's reasoning will be that they are probably sick and will die anyway, so only those will be allowed to get shot. LOL -
Not many things (other than firearms) will last a lifetime even at a high price. I have a low end Cabelas unit that cost roughly $100. It was on sale about 4 years ago for about $80 and I then purchased it with my Cabelas points, so it was basically mine for free. I have been very pleased with it. I don't grind up every bit of my deer, so for me it is all I need. If it clonks out in another year or two, it will be no big deal, but so far it hasn't. I can't see spending a fortune on a grinder if you are going to use it for only a couple of deer a year. The cheap ones will work for that too.

I sure as hell didn't bring it up. Go back to my first post and see who was the first to bring up deer farms and high fence!! I'll give you ONE guess. LOL -

Jealous of what? Your mullet? I will congratulate ANY hunter who kills the dinkiest of free ranging deer before I will congratulate anyone who kills a freak buck in a pen. And so will a hell of a lot of other hunters, no matter what YOU think. You want to make hunting an exclusive pastime only for those willing and able to cough up big money, while everyone else has to be "$#!+ out of luck". Sorry, but this type of attitude I sure as hell ain't jealous of! -

Exactly. This should immediately discount anything he says about the topic of antler restrictions, herd health, or overall hunter satisfaction in the state. What he says and wants to see serves only him and he could give a crap about anything else. -

You have some of the most convoluted, and self serving ideas that I have ever read on ANY forum. You want to make NY a big buck state, where all the land is leased up for big money. And you think this will be great for the state? How in hell would this benefit 97% of us who are already hunting in this state?? I have no issues with paying someone for the use of their land if it's within reason, but we all know where the prices go when an area becomes synonymous with trophy hunting?? The majority of us would then have only state land to hunt with swarms of hunters on it, while people like you would be laughing all the way to the bank. Now with all this, we are supposed give credibility to what you constantly try to tell us around here, right?? You are sooo full of it (and yourself), that it isn't even funny. The few "trophy" hunters that would be hunting in your scenario would NOT make up for all the lost hunters who would no longer be hunting in this state. That's only a figment of your imagination and what YOU would like to see happen.
