  1. Now that's funny! You of all people are saying that you don't ASSUME that the guy on the other side of your property may be up to no good? Heck, from all the stories you've told us over the years of the bandits, poachers, jacklighters, and assorted other hooligans that border your properties, I would have thought you didn't need to make any assumptions. LOL
  2. Ahh OK. Interesting set up. I bet you can handle the being hungry part a lot easier than the being cold part. LOL
  3. I can see your point, but sooner or later there will be a deer that won't want to cross back into their property and they won't be able to resist that shot over into your property. I'm sure the same would happen if you or I saw something on their property. The temptations can be very difficult to overcome in hunting, so for me at least, it's best to stay away from the places where I will be tempted. I guess there might be some value to the Lord prayer in hunting too, with the passage "lead us not into temptation". Of course plenty of hunters would then be praising the Lord and saying their Haleluiah's for tempting them to shoot into the neighboring property if it resulted in a trophy buck on the ground, so go figure! LOL
  4. I will NEVER understand why people put up stands right on the border of neighboring properties. Yeah, they may not have enough land of their own, or are seeing more deer movement near the border, but to me that is NO excuse. You are just looking for trouble by doing this. You will piss off the neighbors, and sooner or later they will return the favor. Just set your stands away from the borders and hunt. Just because you are seeing more deer near the border, doesn't mean some can't make their way to your stand in the middle of the property. And these days with food plots and crap like that, you can entice the deer to come your way if you want. Causing conflict by setting up stands near borders will only bring aggravation to your hunting in the long run.
  5. Gotta love hunters. Last month they were complaining that it's too warm to hunt, now they are complaining that it's too cold. LOL
  6. Some people put way too much thinking into hunting. These days people plant food plots, set out trail cameras and use all sorts of other gimmicks and nonsense and then get disappointed when they don't see or kill ANY deer never mind the ones they saw before the season or caught on camera. My advice is to go out and hunt hard if you want to kill a deer. All this pre-season time and effort isn't worth crap if you don't put the time in when it counts. I don't have any trail cameras and never hunted near a food plot. I just pick-up my gun and put my boots on and go hunting. The less I think and prepare for the hunting season, the more luck I seem to have. Since 1987 I've had only one totally deerless season, so for me at least it's worked.
  7. I like the way you put this. None of us are even for a second blaming the victim, but why is it so hard for some to understand that it's better to be safe than sorry? I know that there aren't too many accidents in hunting, but I sure don't ever want to be the one getting shot with a deer rifle or shotgun so I will take the added step to be MORE visible in the woods rather than less visible. I am totally amazed when I see people hunting on public land in full camo during gun season. They must have way more trust in their fellow man, than I do. If they don't give a $hit about someone sending a bullet towards them, at least they should think of their wives, kids, parents, siblings, anyone who they would be leaving behind who would have to deal with the burden of wondering whether a blaze orange vest, or coat could have possibly prevented the tragedy. The decision for me is a no brainer. Not one seconds debate in my mind as to what the best option is.
  8. You go right ahead and write Andy about your great idea of releasing your mutant deer into the wild! LOL Man, you just keep coming up with doozies each and every post. You and Andy will make a terrific team. The Abbott and Costello of the conservation world!! LOL
  9. They left town. They'll be back after hunting season.
  10. I don't expect hunter numbers to grow. I honestly can't see that happening for numerous reasons. Making this state a trophy deer mecca, as far fetched an idea as that is sure as hell won't bring in more revenue for the DEC either. They would gain a few more non-residents at the expense of many residents, so in the end they'd break even at best, or have a substantial loss at the worst.
  11. Burmjohn wears earrings that turn into earplugs when anyone says anything negative about AR's, so he couldn't possibly be hearing anyone. LOL
  12. Everything is money to you isn't it? So what would happen in NYS if it became the big buck state that you want it to become(not like it will ever happen)?? Instead of having thousands of people who can enjoy hunting for a moderate cost, you want only a few to be able to enjoy it at top dollar so people like you can get their cut from it? That is BS right there, and discounts any statements you make around here. The DEC surely wouldn't benefit from having this state be a trophy mecca. Yeah, maybe they could sell non-resident tags at higher cost, but what good would that do when thousands of other residents hunters would be giving up the sport and they would lose all those license fees? I tell you, out of all the people on this site your ideas have got to be the most convoluted of anyones.
  13. I know one way they will NOT be dealing with it is by allowing sport hunting. That would mean legalizing hunting within one of the boroughs of NYC. Will NEVER happen!!
  14. Lying and hunting have been synonymous for a LONG time. I actually know very few who haven't stretched the truth at least a little about their hunts whether or not illegal acts were involved. I don't see things being any different with the modern hunting mentality compared to the old either. That's just the way it is with hunting. Hunters are typically masters of BS. All you need to do is to tune into this forum for some daily proof of it. LOL
  15. Exactly! People get so stuck up on this dirty vs. clean barrel that it's almost funny. Like even an inch or two will make a difference under normal field conditions. For those shooting at long distances, they will probably screw the shot up way faster because of the wind or a poor shooting rest than they will because of this mysterious change in point of impact from a clean barrel vs. a dirty one.
  16. Good article. Those with the trophy mindset probably love it that people are giving up hunting. There will be more deer and land for them to hunt once people give it up. When I started hunting people were happy with ANY deer they got. Now you get condemned if you shoot something that doesn't measure up for these clowns. For me hunting is NOT about antler size and never will be. And I know that I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Of course you have others (Place name here_____________) who say that the only thing that deer hunting is about is BIG ANTLERS. Yeah right, keep dreaming.
  17. On the first hunt of the year, or before I get to make that first shot, the gun is fired with a clean barrel. After the first shot the gun doesn't get cleaned until the season is over. I highly doubt that the difference in point of impact, or differences in group sizes one get from a dirty barrel vs. a clean one will make one bit of difference when making a good aim on a deer. I think we read way too many magazines where they brainwash people into believing that one needs to fire .25" groups in order to kill deer. That surely is not true.
  18. Every critter that gets consumed by humans has some sort of bugs or parasites on them. Do you think domestic cows, pigs, chickens don't??
  19. "Where have the deer gone in 4J?!" Four Season Whitetail did a round-up this summer and now they are all on his high fence property. If you want a deer, you will need to pay up! LOL
  20. I mean how loud can it be? I could probably work the bolt on any of my bolt actions without making too much noise, so I can't imagine not being able to dampen the sound when switching off a safety.
  21. You are correct about NYC having it's own set of rules. If you are traveling to another destination via airplane for a hunting trip, I think you'd be fine, but like you I don't think I'd take the chance. Not worth it. Those people behind you on line who are looking at you in horror when you are asked to open the gun case might yet get the last laugh when they take you away in handcuffs. I sure as hell would not want to be that person they are taking away!
  22. Not rubbing it in, I was just wondering. You could have done a whole lot better with the .308. That has enough punch for the smaller big game. Handguns or AR .223 are probably like mosquito bites on the bigger critters. I don't think you need to spend $3000 on a rifle for Africa. I know you can find something in one of the popular African calibers for less that will serve you just as well. If you aren't hunting buffalo or lion, you can take lots of game with .300 or .338 magnum calibers which will cost even less than guns in .375, .416, .458 or similar African rounds. Even budget priced rifles shoot great these days.
  23. Glad you had some fun, but I am still trying to figure out why go thru all the trouble of taking pistols and AR's to Africa, when bullets fired from such firearms probably just bounce off the majority of animals that roam that continent? It just seems like a hell of a LONG way to go to just do some plinking at rodents and rabbits. You could have gone to Arizona or other places out west for far less money and heck of a lot less hassle. You are saying that next time you will take some real firepower to Africa like a .375H&H. I am just wondering why it took you a trip over there to find out that a gun like that is better suited for Africa then the pistols and AR's you did take??
