Raccons and opposums in the city-see picture
Cabin Fever replied to NYBowhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Their just overgrown rats!! They stink like a rotting gutpile, disease ridden, dumb as a rock, turkey nest raiding, over-populated rats! -
Didn't see that one! I'll have to check and see if that episode will be on any more this week.

OK, who uses them?? I've been debating on whether to get one or not. Honestly, I limit my shots to 25 yards anyway. From practicing all through summer out to that distance, I feel confident that I can estimate pretty accurately in the woods. I usually pace off 25 yards at each stand while I'm out trimming before season, so I have a pretty good idea. I've never felt that I "needed" one, as I've done fine without one. It's one more expense and something else to carry in the woods. Then I just read, don't bother buying one unless it has ARC. Should I get one or not??

Is it possible to convert existing woodstoves to pellet? Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a pellet stove, certainly heard of them, just haven't laid my eyes on one.
-
Yeah, if we just run the HWBB heat and have it set on 72, we still have to wear sweatshirts and/or sit around with a blanket on. If we have the woodstove going and it has the house at 70 degrees, we're walking around in shorts and tee shirts!

That's the one! You would think with all the apple orchards around with apples littering the ground all winter and all the ag fields around that they would grow some better racks!

Don't get caught. Just be aware that it's illegal for you to transport or release it, unless you have a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators license. Would be better to just put it down. They have up to 16 babies in each litter and I've seen them have 2 litters/yr! -
WNYBH - I tried e-mailing it to you, but it got kicked back saying it was over the RR size limit. I don't get it as they are all 20sec. videos. The color daytime videos are a little larger in size than night time, but not that much. Oh well. Thanks anyway!

Brassicas are a hit or miss. Deer in some areas tear into them, but in other areas they won't touch them! I'm in the "won't touch them area"! I planted Biologic Maximum (includes several types of brassicas) 2 years in a row. They grew GREAT but the deer never even nibbled on them! I checked on the plot throughout winter and they would walk through it or around it, but they never touched the brassicas! I was not happy that I wasted valuable foodplot space on them. Maybe I had other more preferred food in the area though, as I'm surrounded by ag fields and apple orchards. I hope they work out for you though!

I was planning my vacation the other day and noticed that there would be a full moon on Oct. 20th. Having to deal with a limited amount of vacation days, I decided not to burn any that week and save them for later. That's NOT saying I won't hunt that week. I can still hunt in the afternoons, I just won't burn vacation time, so I won't hunt in the mornings. Afternoons are like "freebie" hunts...

Another. I had a daytime video also, but apparently the file must be too large as I can't get it to post? IM000877.AVI

Got some scrape videos from last fall that I thought I'd share. I love putting video cams over scrapes in the fall to see how the bucks act. IM000224.AVI IM000225.AVI IM000885.AVI IM000908.AVI

One advantage that Gander Mountain has is they always have free shipping if you buy online too.

I finished off the basement and needed a cheap heat source. I have hotwater baseboard heat upstairs, but the boiler wasn't big enough to add another zone for the basement. A friend had a very nice woodstove that he didn't use and wanted it out of his living room. Told me if I could get it out of there, it was mine. Figured a free woodstove and free firewood from my property would work out nice. It is a lot of work if you do it yourself! I did 9 facecords myself in ~2 weeks span. I wanted to get 15 facecords, but got laid up. I'll buy the rest this year. It does get old hauling wood in, going up and down the stairs checking and loading the stove, and dealing with hot ashes, worrying about carbon monoxide, etc... BUT, I must say that the heat it produces feels so much better than the other heat from the HWBB. It like penetrates into the body or something! So nice on a cold, blustery, winter day!

Warmest Hunting Boots ?
Cabin Fever replied to fasteddie's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I've been using Cabelas Comfort Trac 2000gr thinsulate in Realtree AP. http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?type=product&cmCat=Related_IPL_831001&id=0020830831002a Liked them so much, I got my son a pair also. They are nice and toasty! I always had problems with getting cold feet and having to end hunts early because of it. I use them all winter while coyote hunting too. They developed a crack in the seam and started leaking, so I replaced them this year and went with the same boot. I got them 2 weeks ago and have had them outside to get the new rubber smell off of them. -
Starter Trail Cam Recommendations?
Cabin Fever replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Yeah, I'd recommend checking out cam reviews on chasinggame.com also. One thing to consider when buying a cheap trailcam is battery life. If it goes through batteries fast, you may as well invest a little more upfront and get a more expensive cam for ~$200. My cams take 3000-4000 pics on 8 AA batteries. -
You gotta try the video mode over a scrape this fall! So cool!

I use to buy into Charlies moon therory. It was a good read anyway. But, since spending a lot of time in woods hunting and comparing my sightings with Charlies predictions, I just don't buy into it anymore. Maybe spread those vacation days over the course of the first 2 weeks instead of taking a whole week off?
-
Do you see as much daytime activity during a bright full moon as you do during dark new moon phases? I HATE hunting during bright full moons! The woods are DEAD! I seldom see any deer activity, mornings, afternoons, or evenings! The squirrels don't even seem to be active. EVERY year, I swear I won't burn precious vacation days during a full moon, but it seems I do anyway, with the same results, year after year! If it falls on a weekend, I'll certainly hunt, but this year I'm going to try to hold off on burning vacation time during a bright full moon.

My first 2010 Trail Cam Buck
Cabin Fever replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Very Nice!! That was setting the bar pretty high, if this is the first trailcam pic of the year!! -
What is a face cord of split hardwood going for in your neck of the woods? The best I can find it for locally is $55/fc if picked up or $65/fc delivered. It seems like a lot of money, but I also know it's a lot of work too! I cut and split 9 face cords myself that'll be ready to go. I figure I'll buy 6 face cords and see where that gets me.

Good God man! Are there any trees left around your place??? LOL Did you cut it yourself or buy that much?

What Attracts The Best In Your Area?
Cabin Fever replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
That's good to hear! I'm planning on planting my oats/rye/winter pea plot next week! I've never tried winter peas before, but everyone that has says they are like ice cream to a deer! They can't resist 'em! -
I buy my own also. I had to Google to get the recipe!

Surely that's not burning 24/7 from Oct-March?
