  1. Last year I got the Bowtech Assassin with release, 1/2 doz arrows and broadheads I was over 800. great bow, lightweight and a pleasure to shoot. definitely recommend.
  2. Exactly, lol. I couldn't have put it better. That's what I think of when I hear big woods. I got turned around once when I was 18 or 19 and oh man what a helpless feeling. Anyway Need not Apply is a great title. Even when you find the foods and what think is perfect you don't find the deer. I would love to venture in and harvest one of those monsters but I know guys who don't even see a deer some seasons.
  3. I think he means more like the Adirondack areas where there aren't fields. Places you can get lost and die in.
  4. I have hunted big woods. It is a totally different ball game in some respects. Seeing deer is a success at times.
  5. things are buttoning up here in Washington County. In the last 5 years especially. I know of one club that has bought and obtained leases on about a total of 3000 acres. The border is about 1/2 mile from my hunting land as the crow flies. There is a lot of country here but there is a lot o hunters. Dutchess has got to be getting real hard.
  6. I watched a documentary on Netflix called Pig Bomb. One sow can have 24+ piglets in a 14 month span. Nothing NY state would want up here. No way they would make you pay for tags with all the damage they cause.
  7. That is absolutely disgusting. And we have to share the woods with A-holes that do this. Sorry to hear this.
  8. Priorities suck! I am figuring out the guy I work for likes to work one week and take one off. It is good for getting time in the woods and time with my boys, but right now I don't have gas money to get to the stand. I was used to working 60 hours a week having money and no time for anything. Good luck with the back up.
  9. My dad doesn't hunt but if I was in your situation I'd be upset too. I wouldn't call DEC. But if was young (say 45 or so) and has many years of hunting left, and says "I am going to sit in your stand" I'd give him a healthy ration... ESPECIALLY if he already tagged out. Dad or not there are some things you just don't do. It usually involves hunting, women and the last beer. This doesn't mean I don't respect my elders, because I do, but there is a time when you gotta be a man and stand your ground. My approach would be tactful and calm at first then the healthy ration if he raises the bar. Tags filled he shouldn't deer hunting at all, especially in your stand.
  10. Glad to hear everything worked out. Must be nice to hunt with your wife. Mine has talked about going out and shows an interest and asks questions about it. I don't think I'll ever see her hunting, let alone bow hunting.
  11. You are right. I was just surprised by a survey. They lowered out of state licenses just to bring more in to make more of a profit. This state is BS.
  12. I can understand you here. But I feel ARs serve more than the political end of things. The politicians aren't going to make anymore if I kill a big deer or not. The guys that are going to hunt now are the same guys that would hunt with ARs. The out of state license fee is pretty high already. I don't think people are going to flock to your or my WMU by the masses if we have AR's. The state will probably make some more $ but I don't see that as argument to oppose them. And the state is actually doing a survey to see what we want. The government is greedy and sickening 99.9999999999999999% of the time, but at least they are listening to people and want their input. Goal of ARs = more older deer. Not lining politicians pockets. I am more of a prochoice guy anyway. I practice AR's and think it makes sense to harvest bigger deer. I am not trying to cram them down anyones throat but they do work. It won't protect all 1.5's. Hell I shot a 1.5 8pt myself. Most squeak through but there is the wildcard option as well.
  13. I was hunting yesterday evening. I was about halfway up the tree when the neighbor rolled in on his wheeler and parked about 30 yards from me on the other side of a little pine knoll. He has parked there for years, I just didn't expect him there on a weekday. About an hour before dark a spike walked down and started feeding 20 yards from the ATV. I think he actually smelled me and not the wheeler. He was looking my way sniffing got all heavy hoofed thinking something was up and left on half alert. I didn't think I'd see anything when }I heard him coming.
  14. passed up a 1.5yr 8pt the other day and saw a 10 today. looks like you made the right decision after all.
  15. A nice buck and at 830 AM. Good deal.
  16. Breathe easy grow. I got a 1.5yr 8pt. At least I think he was 1.5, short snout and all, probably same sized rack as you described. I almost passed him up. First bow deer and a 8 pt at 30 yards or so I couldn't help it. Since then I have seen what would be my biggest buck 3 times now. Not within range but I feel I could dial in on him and get him. Today he was about 150 yards out hammering a 5 acre thicket about an hour before dark. Same place he was Wed AM. No binoculars and I could see horns and saplings swaying just fine. I am very happy I was able to get some food, and a first archery buck but part of me feels that if I waited for the big boy I could have had an extra 50 lbs in the freezer. Since I got him early in the season I didn't get to enjoy the thrill of the chase. I can get a doe but it just isn't the same as trying to zero in on the big one. You got time so breathe easy, the rut as we all know is a magical time.
  17. Haha... Early way to jump to conclusions about people who are for or against AR's. I don't have trail cameras or food plots or tree houses but I personally practice three on one side depending on the size of the deer. Why? More meat, longer breeding time and a decent set of horns for the inside of the barn. BUT I am not against grandpa or the kids blasting a spike, or someone in need of food.
  18. You know it man! I remember once I was sitting in a tree stand in a red oak patch way up on a side of a mountain. It overlooked some foothills that looked like small mounds, with a town nestled up to it. It was well before daylight on a calm, clear and cold morning so the smoke coming out of the chimneys went straight up. There were all these houses and I don't remember seeing one light on. It was primitive and serene. As I was admiring this I had several deer pass under my stand, too dark to see exactly what they were though. Good times, good times.
  19. Nice! Give some time and get some pics!
  20. TeeBug did you set up on that hot spot you mentioned in a different post?
  21. I'd try "the bad luck stand". it sounds nice. hehe
