  1. I call those the lightning strike rubs
  2. Well I guess the Biology teacher that beat this into my was wrong. And so am I.
  3. Coy-dogs don't exist. The coyote gestation periods and domestic dog gestation period differ. It is impossible for them to successfully interbreed. I can add that I have seen some awfully shaggy ol' coyotes that from a distance had me scratching my head.
  4. Look at the ribs on that dog. No wonder. DEC should have done something about those neighbors.
  5. I have been wanting a GPS for a long time. It would be invaluable for situations such as this. Right now I've just been using county tax maps with the topo overlay to get a general idea of prospective areas. GPS would be needed for my plan to come together. Hopefully Santa will bring me one for Christmas. I am going to get out to one area either next weekend or the weekend after that.
  6. Wow, this thing blew up. I wasn't aware that he had to stop tracking the good blood because it went on the other property and he had to get permission. Well it was very respectful for him to ask the neighbor. Now it sounds like it can be chalked up to a learning experience, such as asking ahead for tracking rights , or whatever. Don't thrash people because they hate seeing a wounded deer suffer or get wasted. It is very easy to take things out of context.
  7. It doesn't take eons for deer to get that big. Not too sure about people just shooting bucks and letting them rot, it happens but not on some grand scale.
  8. wow nice one! you look thrilled... lol.
  9. Good question I was wondering that myself. Huh.
  10. Beautiful lake isn't it? I'm about 45 minutes southeast.
  11. How much land do you have to hunt and what surrounds the land you hunt, field, oaks, beech, swamp, etc..
  12. lol... they are some freaks of nature aren't they.
  13. Sounds like you did a good job! Too bad he's not into it. Seems like 99% of us guys that hunt don't a have a lady that is into it.
  14. I've hunted areas of the National Forrest in Vermont. That is where my primary "big woods" experience has come from. I have hunted Hogtown in Lake George quite a few times, and a private property that borders up with the Lake George Park on the Fort Ann side. In Vermont there were a lot more Beech than Oaks, and that was the ticket.
  15. LMAO. Be sure to yell "INCOMIINNNGGGG!"
  16. I'd pull the reflective markers, some dudes can't stand it when they see someone "squatting" on a spot. You did the work for them with the markers and they can reap the benefits of your efforts, unfortunately. I too follow the old school philosophy that if someone is in the area leave them the hell alone. Too bad others can't play nice and follow this philosophy!
  17. Thanks guys. It would definitely be rifle. I have hunted certain big woods before without ever reviewing maps, I just beat feet and scouted hard in the summer months. I am looking at the maps for totally new areas that may hold these funnels, oaks, etc. Just a learning experience for my own gratification. I think once I do get an area located I will try to check it out when there is snow as recommended. It would be interesting to find out the correlations between my map research and the actual results.
  18. Good job man! That is also on my bucket list, setting up a base camp with a couple of amigos.
  19. I am a hard core hunter, I love it and get out whenever I can, all the way to end.
  20. Tough deal man. Assumptions aren't worth while! It can be hard to apply that on any scale, I know. I don't know how many times I assumed that a certain person, or persons, were responsible for something only to find out it wasn't them. Then I end up feeling guilty. I had a shotgun stolen last year, and I was dead certain it was a neighbor. I confronted a friend who lived with the neighbor and said no it wasn't so-and-so, but I didn't believe him either. Well the sheriffs recovered the gun when they busted this other guy who was breaking in to places all over the county. It was actually a different neighbor. And I had a tree stand stolen at the end of last season, and I immediately started thinking of whom it could be. Well I ran into one of the guys that hunts the land and came to mind when I was assuming who could have done it. I told him about the theft and he was genuinely bummed, again I felt guilty. He has invited me over to shoot guns on his range and bore site a new scope I am getting. I just pack my climber in and out with me. I bought pretty much the lightest one I could find, but it still sucks not feeling comfortable leaving anything behind, and having to pack in and out. Your case does sound very premeditated to me, seeing as how they needed to cut a lock and be able to reach your climbing sticks.
  21. I've been thinking of getting back to the ADK Park or the Lake George Park. I have been viewing tax maps with a topographic overlay to locate possible state land locations. I use aerial photos and with the oaks leaves turning color later and a definite brown to try and find food sources. Also with wind in mind consider parking on the NE side of where I'd want to hunt. Just trying to figure out how to use the terrain and elevation to my advantage, funnels and what not. Any thoughts?
