  1. oct 13. hecksher state park on long island with my kids. although not hunting get time with the kids and the deer. saw 3 doe and 2 eights that were about 100 inches.ove this place
  2. Good luck and let us know as soon as you find something
  3. Those pictures get me fired up. Im right around teh corner on Coventry.
  4. Thanks for the pic. Tha just became my scene saver at work.
  5. Great pics from the stand. I was overlooking my own plot like that last year. Had cam pics of deer in the plot almost everyday of every week leading up to season and even the week i hunted. I then sat in the stand on 3 seperate weekends and didnt see jack. Had to laugh. I would say the buck on the right is 1 1/2 and the other 2 1/2. Cannot really guess score. Great pics though. Cant wait till i have the same view in a few weeks.
  6. Oh and also i think they suggest wrapping the tree strap up as high as you can reach so if you do fall out of the stand you are just out of the stand and actually at stand level to make it easier to climb back in.
  7. Believe it or not it can be deadly. I watched (once after all the stands i bought and the free dvds that comes with it) a dvd and showed how when you are just hanging there in your harness the straps around your legs actually act like a tournequet (spelling???). Your blood gets pumped into you legs and actually pools there because of the pressure from the legs straps around your thighs. That is why with all new harnesses you get that additional little hook and strap that they claim can also be used to drag deer. Your are supposed to hook it to the rear of the harness and then step into it with one foot and stand up in the strap to relieve the pressure. I was completely shocked when i saw it Never thought that could happen. I think that you really only have a matter of a few minutes hanging there before you pass out. Also that is why i think some companies are now making the leg straps with an additional strap across your butt so you really are sitting instead of hanging by your legs.
  8. Ive used junk broadheads from walmart as well couldnt resist for the price but they were 1 hit wonders (both expanable and fixed). I stopped using them cuz after the shot when i retrived the arrow a blade or two was missing and i didnt want to find out the hard way with a slit wrist that they were still in the deers chest cavity
  9. Great going guys. Reading this post get me fired up but now just have to wait till November. A loonnnnggggg wait ot made any easier by the pathetic play of the Jets. Nothing to look forward to on the weekends now.
  10. Was wondering if we could start a sightings or activity log that could get stuck to the top of this forum section. Maybe even break it down by zone (northern, catskills with zones 3 and 4, western etc or just one big one) The season is starting next week and i am excited to go but probably will have to wait until November 2 to get away. I think it would be cool knowing what is going on out there from you lucky guys that get to hunt much more frequently. Doesnt even have to just hunting sightings, anything backyard bucks, deer on the commute to work. I realize there is a harvest thread but that is or should be just for the successful guys. What do you all think.
  11. Saw this post on another forum and copied it because dont recall seeing anything like that asked here. How many shot opportunitiies have you had per year or in your life at a 120" buck and How many of you have seen a legit 140inch buck or better while hunting (not trail cams). Me personally, niether to both. Maybe saw a couple 120 - 125 in bucks in PA years ago bow hunting but they were always a couple hundred yards away with no shot opportunity.
  12. Whats planted on thse trails and you get any deer sighting trail cam pics of the deer using them.
  13. It appears as if there is a grove of pine (probably hemlocks)growing to the right of the field. In my experience deer tend to bed in them for thermal cover but you have to find out what the rest of the woods are made of. I think if you got back to that field and threw out some winter rye you may get something growing cuz that stuff grows on concrete. But i wouldnt start chopping up the plot as it may disturb the woods too much. Also the wind is most likely coming from left to right as you look at the map, generally blowing out of the west during late bow / gun. The best advice i would give you is go to Bing and put in the address of the property. when the search comes up hit "maps" on the top left and you will get a great over head. Then zoom in as far as you can and hit "birdseye". In this mode you get amazing close ups of the woods and then in the upper right corner around the compass there will be arrows which will allow you to rotate the property view from different angles north, south, east, west. Sometimes you get lucky because some of those satelite photos are in the winter where there are no leaves on the trees and you can see amazing detail. Try it out and let us know. It will give you incredible insight into the makeup of the property without stepping foot on it.
  14. Im digging the merlot or pinot Noir. With some mushrooms
  15. Thought of that exact thing this morning. Watching boone and crocket hunting show on hunting channel and it was about the reintroduction of elk into pennsylvania. Apparently they started with rocky mountain elk that were trapped in yellowstone and that formed the basis of the population. Very cool idea. Obvious issues were that elk had to be in much larger tracts of land than deer.
  16. The problem is that with a state like New York if you were to do the average buck photo it would significantly vary per area of the state. Im from long island and have friends that whack 130 in bucks each year and there have been 2 200 inchers taken here the last 3 years but in my history of hunting i havent seen a deer in the woods hunting over 100 inches. If i were to go towards the finger lakes im sure that would change but my roots are in chenango county. Whats a monster for one guy is a little bit bigger than average for the next guy. look at some of the avatars on this site im sure most of us on here would pay to go hunt that buck in ohio, iowa, illinois etc.
  17. Without the monsters it would be like playboy and penthouse trying to make money on the average soccer mom housewife. They would be broke only selling to the milf fanatics
  18. There used to be a five leged (extra back leg) fawn in the country store in masonville in delaware county on thw corner of route 8 and 206 i think. That thing always gave me the willys. This is worse. Its like those national geographic shows with siamese twins where one was partially absorded as an embrio.
  19. Great no one else is going to be in the woods that weekend. More deer for me. (joke. I just love the guys that post and get pissed if they dont get a response to an obscure question immediately)
  20. Im a big fan of the bolt action rifles. And to be honest the compact may be a youth / womans rifle. What i like about the bolt action is even with a short barrel the pointed 308 or7-08 can still reach out and touch them at 100 plus yards in an emergency
  21. Not a monster? I would love a buck like that. He had to score 140 plus. Fyi im a dawn to dusk guy passing on spike and fork and basket racks but have yet to get one over 100 inches.
  22. Ive seen articles in newspapers that there were some around cortland and others that were around hancock area i think near the PA border. Not surw on specifics as to exact areas but do a google search and im sure you will find numerous local newspaper articles about sightings etc
  23. Beachpeaz. The way i look at it i would rather have 2 channels of unrealistic hunting shows then the other junk that is on tv. Eventhough i will never have land like lee lakosky doesnt mean i cant enjoy that show No offense but to me, a die hard hunter of 26 years, on state land and small pieces of property where the neighbors are all bronw and down your avatar is unrealistic. Great buck by the way but some of us have to dream. When i watch those shows i remember what michael waddel said on one show "you cant pass up a deer thats 140 inches anywhere". That put it into perspective cuz if he is dropping the hammer on a 140 when he sees it those booners are really few and far between.
