  1. Congrats. Especially being traditional. Im still trying to get my first deer with my recurve. Im might even take it out gun season (with the 7mm wsm short mag as backup for the long shots) to try and get one.

    No brow tines

I believe the same as damour its probably a age thing at this point. Give that buck another year and he will be nice. I had trail cam pics of 2 seperate 1 1/2 yr old bucks. one was a big four and the other a barely legal spike.
  3. I had a question for you guys that are into planting your own plots. 2011 was the first year i put in a plot smallish 1/4 acre not planted with green patch plus, oats and wheat and some clover did fine, brassicas not so good. I am planning on adding another plot about the same size next year. I guess my question is after each year of having a food plot does deer activity increase to a point? that is after 1 year some deer use the plot but then after each year the plot is around will more and more deer use it after they learn where it is and whats in it as a new food source? thanks
  4. I use under armour cold gear on top and for the bottom i bought these goose down long johns for under your pants then put on insulated overalls If it really gets chilly i break out the heat wraps...You can get a 2 pack in cvs or rite aid that wrap around your entire lower back kidney area and will stay heated alllll day. Best thing i bought so far.
  5. I meant November 3 hot. didnt see jack yet this season
  6. For me worst in a long time...opening weekend of bow rain and high winds...didnt see a deer. November 3 hit and November 4 nada...so far not even a flag in the distance. Going back up to hunt bow on friday bfore opening day then sat and then sunday. Keeping my fingers crossed.
  7. Great pic. Thanks for the new home scene on my work computer.
  8. GReat pics. All of them. Question is that first buck in some type of brassica plot?
  9. Is there any legal hunting allowed in Harriman State Park??? always wondered, driving past that place i have seen 2 bear (1 dead and 1 just make across 87) and plenty of deer. If not they must have some old bucks in there
  10. If the rack is on the larger size i would say sure but if it is a small rack then you may have problems with volume
  11. Dave, great pics as always. Have u ever trapped anything smaller than a red tail such as a goshowk or coopers hawk? And u def have B---s of steel for grabbing a hold of that thing with those talons.
  12. Just for clarity i am not dead set on a number inch wise just curious and trying to be realistic. As to shooting deer i consider myself to have become very proficient with a compound bow (have been bow hunting for 17 years or so (before that started gun hunting when i was 16). I'm 41 yearsold by the way. Not 100pct proficient but good enough that i feel as though if a deer gets within 40 yards or so hes toast. That being said i really started getting into hunting with a recurve with no sites shootinng stricking instinctual. I could hunt does only with my recurve as the challenge of getting a deer within 15 makes it all that enjoyable. I have passed on untold spikes and forks waiting for the bigger buck. I know that my area in chenango has good deer but im realistic in that i know its not the adirondacks, or steuben county, or weschester or long island.
  13. I was just curious how many guys on here have broken the 100 inch mark on a new york white tail with either gun or bow. I myself have yet to surpass the 100 inch mark. I always thought that it could be a possiblilty but the more i hunt the harder it seems for me to achieve. I hunt primarily in Chenago County on 32 acres. Now there are some good bucks around as my nephew shot a 115 inch 18 inch wide 8 a few years back on our property but i have yet to even see one in the woods. I pass on all small bucks i see as i am trying to practice QDMA in my area but in the back of my mind i believe the only help im going to get is when DEC expands AR to unit 7P to give some more of these young bucks a chance to get older. I hunt dawn to dusk during bow and gun season. I am becoming a bigger believer in Charles Alzsheimers (sp?) deer and deer hunting episode entitled the 100 inch booner. A few 90 plus inch bucks but no 100 yet. Maybe this gun season will be my year. Maybe i will end up settling for backstraps of a doe wrapped in bacon grilled on the bbq while drinking coors light. Im not giving up yet.
  14. Congrats. Im lucky enough to be 2 for 3 for does on the ground with a bow. Must admit it is probably just as exciting ask having a buck come in.
  15. You have to be crazy to climb a tree with a safety belt. I use a lone wolf hand climber and even though its been great 99 percent of the time i did have one occasion where the bottom fell down about 6 feet (thank god for those connector straps). Harnessed up to the tree made me feel safe and i got the bottom of the stand back up. I also had a friend, thank god he had his hunter safety vest on, that after getting close to 30 feet up a tree the bottom of his climber completely disconnected and fell almost all the way down the tree. I had to use my climber up the back side of the tree to get him his base. If no strap it would have probably gotten ugly real quick.
  16. Yeah this close to the season i wouldnt be messing around trying to get pics if you havent already had the cam there for a while. I bought a 2011 bushnell trophy cam infrared and have it over a little woodland food plot and have gooten pics of deer walking passed cam ( i have it set up to cover the center where 6 entrances / exits to the plot are) in the first pic and then on the second next pic u see the deer in a startled appearance looking at cam...the regular does in the area are well used to it, turkeys show no interest, but a few deer have probably heard the camera go off which is amazing because i accidently took pics of myself in my basement (quiet as anything) at arms length away and didnt hear a sound. The most adverse reaction was a yearling forkhorn in September already had horned walking by the cam...then next pic he is high tailing it out of hte plot straight away from the cam.
  17. That sucks all around. What if you were tethered to the tree and the entire stand caught on fire??? Geez what a way to go.
  18. Here are couple pics from my trail cam since October 16, 2011. First one looks like turkey is going to whip on that yearling.
  19. I was up in Chenango on opening weekend and except for a flock of turkeys (missed one with my recurve) saw nothing. Was just up thrusday the 3rd and friday the 4th and again not even a whiff of a deer. Coming up from long island through northern jersey all the way up route 17 i only saw 3 road kill bucks and 2 of them were in the suburbs of new jersey near Mahwah. Had my trail cam out over my little woodland plot and was getting pics of five or six different does (no bucks since august) and turkeys galore from 11 am through the end of the day and while im up there the 3rd and the 4th a big goose egg ...except for some grouse, a grey fox and a pileated woodpecker. Whoever said hunting over these small kill plots is like baiting is crazy. Sucks that i'm done for bow this year. Next weekend off of hunting hanging with wife and kids. But then its break out the bang stick for some redemption.
  20. Congrats. I was up there thursday and friday and saw jack. Today and tomorrow look like better days. Man i'm jealous.
  21. Set the guy up with a cheap cam on a tree. And then use a second cam up 20 feet in a nearby tree watching other cam. Bet u catch ur neighbor
  22. I tend to have the same problem on my 32 acres. Some years its oaks, some years the neighbor has corn etc etc. Its all part of hunting.
  23. Pretty sick probably a once in a lifetime event.
  24. I saw an episode of deer and deer hunting earlier this year. Charlie A. was saying by his property they radio collared 2 does that were free roaming and when they were ultimately shot one was 8 years the other i believe he said was 12. Also i think both had fawns the year they were shot.
