  1. Im the complete reverse. Im 42 grew up in hunting family and hunting camps great companionship and now find myself hunting alone or my brother. Welcome aboard and great site
  2. Question. I was looking at the ruger compact rifle in 308 or 7mm-08 and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. Rugers site says they have a 16.5 inch barrel. The longest shot i have on my property is maybe 100 yds out of my brothers ladder stand. Just seems thAt my 7mm winchester short magnum is overkill for those 50 yd and under shots
  3. just finished watching deer and deer hunting with charlie alscheimer. this year he predicts rut will be intense for 1 week following the october full on the 25. he says that it should be rockin until the 6 or 7. of november. just informed the wife that im ghost friday the. 2 nd the 3rd and 4th. gonna try and get it done. anyone else adhere to the words of charlie?
  4. never saw up close but looks like it size and color. do deer eat those things
  5. In that last pic is that a rubbing/licking tree branch in the center of the pic? Saw in another post that a guy intentionally planted one (like a fence post) and the deer couldnt pass it up.
  6. That last pic of that young deer is great. He looks like he has a lot of potential.
  7. Another good area to check out for bow hunting is in Ellenville area of Ulster / Sullivan County. Route 208 north off of Route 17. Travel down to Route 52 i believe and make a left around the resevoir, make a right at the high school and follow up to Moores Hill Road, Huge chuck of state land, no doe permits allocated in this area so there are a lot of deer (legal to take a doe with your bow). I hunted there for many years. Also turkey, bear, bobcat, coyote all legal. It itfairly hilly and doesnt get pounded bow season...gun is a different story.
  8. This really has nothing to do with New York but didnt kwow where else to post. I have been watching hunting shows and noticed (now that i am more interested in food plots etc) that on a couple of the shows in Iowa, Kansas etc a type of fruit tree is catching my attention. Most of the time its on the edge of fields on these shows. Cant really describe tree other than apple shape but it appears to have tennis ball looking type of fruit, tennis ball light green, but maybe a little larger. Anyone know what this maybe???
  9. I envie your ability to get along with your neighbors and all be on the same page. I hunt only 30 acres and every one around me is if its brown its down. That being said the recent issue of Deer and Deer hunting (magazine and tv show) had a topic by Charles Alscheimer about realistic deer management plans. The short of it was that after years of shooting for 150 class bucks (in central new york) with cooperative of neightbors controlling 750 acres thay goals were never met after 6 years of trying. Now i dont know Charlie of if he is even a great land steward with food plots or TSM etc but the end result is was they lowered their standards to 3.5 yr old b/c of too many bucks roaming during the rut off the 750 acres and getting shot. His reevaluated goals were for the top 10% of the bucks on the property. One year that could be a 125 3 year old the next year it could be a 4 yr old. Just some food for thought. And good luck.
  10. Whats crazy is in that both sets of pics it appears that the deer reacted to the camera shot (noise or whatever). These deer amaze me more and more, the bucks are crossing a stream (has to make a little noise) and they still react to the camera which appears to be at least 15 to 20 yards away Great pics though.
  11. I wouldnt stress. my histry with the opener (even Oct 15 ) was always warm with very little success. Still great to get out and sit in a stand but sighting we never that many.
  12. As sad as it is to say with the way those things breed the population is gonna grow quicker than we would all like. Although i think that New York's cold winters (well not last year) will help slow the population a little. May decrease the number of litters a mother has per year. However, i would like to see one and get a shot but im not holding out or keeping my fingers crossed. I have been hunting every year since i was 16 (42 now) and have only seen 1 coyote in the woods while on stand, 1 red fox, 1 grey fox, zero bear and zero bobcats and they are a lot more prevalent than the hogs. (and im talking dawn to dusk sits every time out)
  13. I you have ever seen a dog hunt with scent (bird dog, coon hound, squirrel dog) you really get to realize just how strong an animals nose really is. I wash all my close in scent free detergent then store them in a scent free duffel bag with dirt waffers thrown about. Really smells like dirt andevery time you put your clothes into a bag after a hunt the scent recharges. I also use scent away spray on my exposed body parts, head, hands and on my boots then when im up in a tree (i like to set stands in hemlocks) i will break a couple small branches around me for additiona pine scent then give a spray or two of coon urine. oh and i also put on a base layer of scent away clothes. That all being said, i do not think that you could ever remove any and all huan scent. The best that you can hope for is that the amount of scent a deer gets from you is so minimal that it is not alarming.
  14. "My buddy Wally drove to PA with another guy to archery hunt for a few days. First night he walks to his stand, climbs up and goes to nock an arrow and finds out he left his bow quiver at home, in Buffalo. He climbs down, heads across the field to his buddies stand and whispers, "hey Gerry, can I borrow a couple arrows"? (Maybe you had to be there to appreciate it?)" I try and not to forget anything but this story reminded me of a classic from my past. I was on state land bowhunting with a good friend. We were in stands about 75 yards apart and could clearly see each other. Well a small 8 point comes down the trail by him and he proceeds to fling (yes fling cuz he wasnt shooting) arrows at this deer and all i kept hearing was those big aluminum arrows bouncing off the pine branches. He was so bad the deer idnt even run. After its all over and the deer walked away he sneaks over to me andd says "can i borrow a couple of arrows"
  15. Regardless of anyones feelings about AR the restrictions do work. I have hunted PA for the past dozen years or so and was there before AR strted (3 pt rule) and through until 2010 when i lost my land. In the beginning it sucked but you saw more deer. All the little guys that got the pass. Then after it was implemented for several years seeing multiple 2.5 and 3.5 year olds with a few 1.5 yr old bucks scattered in chasing does and rutting like crazy quickly makes you a firm believer. Now i have family that meat hunts and are not fans of AR because u cant make antler soup but after it is implemented (not that anyone has a choice) it will turn around and after you are seeing more deer and getting bigger bucks you will tend to favor it. Just my opinion.
  16. I works for me especially on those days when you are not seeing much. You always have in the back of your mind that one of those bucks may walk into your shooting lane at any time. Also what helps is the time on the cameras. Daylight movement even if it is from does helps make the long day sits even easier.
  17. Was thinking of getting another trail camera. I have a trophy cam already and love it but was looking to add one to my collection that takes both pics and also has the ability to do the field scan thing. Want to set up the field scan mode up during gun seaon on a section of the property where a few logging roads meet to see what deer movement is going on over there when the guns start blazing. My property is THICK with beech saplings so once you are off the trail you cant see more than 50 yards. Anyone have any luck with them? I know they are knew.
  18. A great place to look for traditional archery equipment is 3Rivers Archery. Also i think that they have sample packs of arrows (like a 6 pack of arrows of varying weights so you dont have to buy a full 1/2 dozen and then find out that they are not perfect for your bow) Also i would give carbon arrows a look. Since i started with my recurve i only shoot carbon. THey are a lot tougher than alluminum especially on those shots where you miss the target but a foot or so.
  19. I know full well about bucks (not always big) and their shyness towards a camera. In fact the larger of the two deer i posted was actually right in front of the camera (i got 3 shots of just his tines upclose) and he was moving around as if to see what was making noise. He then chose to take another route and thats when i got him further away from the came heading out on a different logging road. Last year i had a pick of a big four point walking with head straight out about 15 feet from cam and after his first pic the 2nd and 3rd shots were of his flag running out of the plot. I tried to remedy the situation by moving the cam to the far corner of the plot where the deer dont seem to enter or exit and it is kind of bare ground with nothing growing but it is still pointing in the direction of the trails that lead in an out just farther away. Hopefully that works. As far as checkig my cams, they are over 200 miles from home so the only time i get to check is maybe 1x per month or so.
  20. I would leave it as long as possible. Like posted above very addicting. I would say if you dont have a set spot to get pics of deer move it around every 2 weeks or so until u pick up a good spot where you are getting a lot of pics...maybe kind of hard if just on any plain old deer trail if you dont have a food source cant bait in New York so you may have your work cut out for you. From experience i know, i ran an old cam years ago before i put in food plot and after a month of so would only get a couple doe pics and an occasional other animal (fox coon etc) Once food plot went in last year got repeated doe fawn and turkey pics. Not getting so lucky with repeat buck pics (see my other post i started today) but have been getting some passing through buck shots. Regardless i didnt see JACK except a small hen turkey that i missed with my recurve the entire bow season sitting over this plot where my cam was. Let me tell you it aint like you see on tv at least not for me and i was getting pics everyday up unitl bow season and up unitl gun season. Good luck and its a lot of fun. One good buck pic makes sitting for long hours on the stand that much easier.
  21. Just wondering how many of you that consistently run trail cam get numerous pics of the same buck during the course of one year (sort of like you see on the hunting shows) 2011 i put in a small clover plot on my property in Chenago (1/4 acre) and set up a trail cam starting June 2011. I had dozens of pics of several different doe (clearly distinguishable due to rips and things in the right ear vs the left or no ear issues at all) and one small 1 1/2 spike that was with his mother. Those were the only deer that i got repeat pics of...By gun season i did have 3 different 8 pointers on cam, a big 4 point and 2 fork horns but that was only 1 shot each as they were walking through the plot. I dont know if the deer walking though the plot is due to its placement of being where there were previous travel routes where 3 logging roads came together (just expanded) or if they found the plot, always cirled around except for 1 time each that walked through and got caught on came. Also interesting none of the buck pics ever showed them eating in plot just walking through...maybe that was because it was new plot??? 2012 i expanded the plot with good clover growth and in the newly expanded area i tried some brassicas and oats...we shall see how that goes and grows. Cam is out again since the July 30 and i will not be able to get to it until mid september or early october (killing me) but during the month of July here are the only 2 bucks i got on cam
  22. My trick when using a climber is to find a tree that has some low branches that i can use for cover and basically climb up until i get right into them (i've been as low as 12 feet)...keep your stand to the down wind side of a good deer trail and if cover is an issue i have even climbed up the tree with the trail on the back side. With my lone wolf im very comfortable climbing and then standing and turning and shooting behind me. A pain in the neck but you have that tree truck to block your outline. which ever way the deer comes from just ready yourself on the opposite side of the tree and your have a perfect quatering away shot ever time...as long as the deer do what you hope they will do which usually never happens
