  1. Any coloration differences in the heads??? I am trying to determine by trail cam pics. Have always had turkeys in my area and heard them gobbling in the spring but since i put in a little 1/4 clover plot they have been regulars all summer and spring startinig as poults through the fall. I trying to get en estimate on number of male birds. Is it possible that they maybe head coloration differences come end of October / November? It just hard to really tell by the other methods mentioned with trail cam pics that arent up close.
  2. I itching to get out there. Waiting till end feb march to start some food plot work expanding existing plots. May 1 cannot come soon enough. Maybe i can convince one of my nephews to go out for the youth season. I have yet to call a gobbler into gun range and never took a turkey in my life. Would love to call one in for one of my nephews but we shall see.
  3. I was curious if anyone has any experience or knowledge regarding when you can tell by sight the sex of a turkey chick in the fall of the year. I had a trail cam over a clover plot all summer and fall and had 12 or so birds in it, they started out as little poults (about 16) and were there regularly into the fall. I really havent looked closely at the pics but was wondering at abouot what age you can clearly see if a young bird is a jake or a jenny. Just trying to get a guage on number of potential male birds in my area come spring season. And since i have never shot a turkey before in my life the first legal jake i see maybe goingg home in the back of my vest.
  4. Just wondering how many guys on here run their cams throughout the winter. I pulled my the weekend of opening day gun...since i didnt go back up and worry of poachers grabbing my cam. Was wonnderiing how a cam like bushnell trophy (wich i have and had a great battery life throughout the summer) would hold up battery wise in the winter.
  5. Have a Bushnell also and love it. Could be a little better nite time pics but still a great camera. Those 2 dusk pics with the mother and fawn entering the corn field are awesome. That's a pic to have someone recreate in a painting. Colorful sky and maybe frost on deer's back.
  6. Im not super experienced with recurves. Have been shooting one for the past 3 years or so. As NYantler said the draw weight stamped on the inside bow limb is measured at a 28 inch draw. Calculations need to be made if your draw length will be shorter (lee weight) or longer (more weight) than 28 inches.
  7. Early in the season i may pass to let him try and get older...but as the season goes on and the frustration builds he would probably be in the crosshairs
  8. I was just wondering what were some of the oddest things you have seen in the woods deer hunting. (Got the idea after watching rerun of primos where guy had bucks chasing does and then fight nuder his stand) THings like fights, mating, deer sounds etc etc Best i can think of that i ever saw was in Pennsylvania one year while bow hunting just inside woodline i saw a smallish 5 pt get chased off of a doe by a big spike / small fork. The 5 got real pissed and then proceeded to make numerous rubs and scrapes on the other edge of the field. Other than that i just usually see deer walking by on trails or hauling A during gun season.
  9. Great story and congrats but where are the pics.
  10. I have been hunting for 25 years with a gun and 17 with a bow. Never lost a deer with a gun. 5 total with the bow Lost 2 with the bow that 99% ended up dead...rushed a track job on a beautiful 8 on state land. jumped him out of his bed 2 times. Tracked him for about a mile until lost blood other was doe. Grazed (i know it equals a hit) 2 bucks and a doe. Followed all blood drops then petered out. 2 were low shots and the doe was a grazing leg.
  11. Thats a great story and buck. To me those stalking hunts that work out seem to be much more memorable than the sit and wait treestand hunts.
  12. Great buck. That thing has some roman nose in that profile pic.
  13. Got to try and get it done in the am when its still cool. Hot or cold cant miss it.
  14. I was wondering if anyone has ever made a grouse tail fan display like u usually see in turkeys. Although i never shot one myself (dont real target them) i have seen a bunch of road killed and was wondering if it could be done.
  15. My deer hunting pattern is realtree hardwoods grey. Problem is they dont make it anymore in regular gear and since im such a woman where all my camo has to match my next gear will probably be realtree AP. Hopefully that will be a few years from now.
  16. great pics. a after dark sucks but i guess having an idea of what is prowling around makes sitting on stand that much easier.
  17. The 100 inch mark just came from an episode of deer and deer hunting i saw this year. I think it was alsheimers way of saying have fun and adjust your standards cuz we are all not going to be able to get those Iowa / Illinois or even New York giants. Have 150 inch deer been shot within a few miles of my place in Chenango of course. Do i honestly believe that i will get one where i hunt no. Has it changed the way i hunt or the enjoyment i get out of hunting no.
  18. I was having the same thought process the other day with the deer around my property. I posted the 100 inch mark thread because 2 of the deer we got off the property (1 i shot in gun and 1 we found dead) were in the high 90 (96 -98 inches) i was told represent 2.5 year olds Now, i also posted pics of 2 bucks in September and most on here concurred that they were both 1.5 year old. (I knew 1 def was because he was with his mother and new fawns all year ...started getting pics of him in JUne obviously not a fawn with no spots and he grew only 3 inch spikes maybe if that. The other buck was a big fork horn maybe 30 plus inches tops. Not by my math that means they will have an over 60 inch jump when the reach 2.5 years old??? Where i hunt there are not real ag fields except for one 5 acre corn field so its mostly woodland browse. I am completely confued by the whole thing because if those 90's are 3.5 then my property is doomed. Great post by the way
