  1. Load the round nose conventional solids for 375H&H. I have used them on tiny antelope to good success. Buried one in a Buffalo and it could be reloaded. LOL I have some 9.3 PP to load but haven't had the time. I frequent a forum with many AU members and they get fine performance on game with them.
  2. With a scope and a few rounds/ sling it'd be in the 7's.... Just sayin'. LOL
  3. Was hot for one of his Ruger #1's in 475 for a spell.... Done some color case and bluing for me on a few projects over the years. Nice guy to talk with.
  4. Sorry for the loss of a friend.
  5. Have had Equine meat more than a few times, it makes for outstanding table fare. A few times in Europe, here at home where some local Mexican folks grill it for fajitas, and the kind that wear black and white pajamas; Go out of my way to munch on some Zebra. Grilled loin as steak, in a rich stroganoff style gravy, breaded like schnitzel with wild mushroom sauce. Bought dried sausage snack sticks made of Zebra meat on several occasions for hunting snack in the field and could live on that and Eland biltong (like chewy soft jerky). YUM!
  6. And this little piggy went to market...... Great exchange rate with the Euro, good time for a trip.
  7. Like those cat mounts....good stuff.
  8. Blaser.....wacked a few crows with it too when calling. Has adjustable open sights and the smooth bore does VERY well with Brenneke slugs.....I'd have no issue shooting a deer with one if legal in NY.Set up to mount optics as well and used a red dot for slug testing. Couple hunts I have done you can shoot birds if you fill tags and for the table, and 2 Allens screws and a bolthead swap make a quick changeover. Box or two of shells doesn't weight much for ammo allowance when flying. Shotgun conversion of Mauser 98's are around, I've seen mostly 12 ga for sale on places like gun broker. Back a few years I handled two surplus 98's in 410 and 28ga in a gun shop in Barcelona and looked into importing one; but the costs started adding up and squashed the idea. They are highly modified and I just wanted one for a novelty; they were dirt cheap and they were fairly trim from the ones I have seen. Sure wouldn't trust any high brass turkey loads in one. LOL
  9. Favorite shotgun is a O/U set with 20 and 28 ga barrels fitted; use the 28 almost exclusively. Also have a 28 ga barrel that fits on my bolt action rifle and killed a couple hundred squirrels and a handful of turkeys with that one; acts as a single shot. Only shotgun gauge I load for; although I found a great price on Winchester AA's and bought 10 cases so working through some of that for the hulls.
  10. Set trigger is adjustable on CZ's....... But cycling the action on any set trigger is a not proper use of that feature in any case. There's also words to that effect in the owners manual about ONLY setting a trigger just before you shoot. Knowing how to let down the "set" also is a required skill, so that the firearm is not left in a set condition. Much more care is required when trigger weights go down into the ounces in any firearm.
  11. I have a private jet? Who knew? But I'm only 4 hours from ADK's so I usually just use the 12 year old Ford Escape with 200,000 miles. Maybe I'll start calling my one man tent a "lodge". Life member of SCI since about 2005 and been in and out of 2 NY chapters here and there.
  12. Struck out on NM Elk.....again. Hope those that are getting a tag post some pics if they connect!
  13. Thank you all for the kind comments. Wish I had taken my DSLR this trip, but find a P+S much easier to deal with when hunting for taking pics when out in the field. Always struggle with having time to take pics when days are short and finding and stalking something is the real task at hand. Good trip and good folks met along the way.....
  14. Love my Big Agnes SL1 and my Neo-air. Pick the right bag and no reason to be cold.
  15. Not real familiar with Northern Jersey/Southern NY except for AT, but I'd start here... http://www.nynjtc.org/view/hike They have very good maps availible too; I have Catskill and Taconics sets and they are hard to beat.(Hint; may even give you some idea on where to plan a little hunting as they detail public and private lands very well)
  16. Just thinking out loud... But maybe try Carl Pepi who owns Jonas Bros Taxidermy down that way; he may be able to help or put you with someone. (If you google there is also a Jonas in Denver, different companies) There are a couple of specialty companies that move mounts; I understand they are pricey; I can find a name or two if you get stumped. (Ads are usually in SCI publications) Love to see the Asain animals if you get a chance to post pics....Ibex is on my shortlist.
  17. Tahr was my primary animal for the trip so that being done, we drove South to look for Chamois. I feel the continued good weather hurt my chances here as for the next several days animals were higher and higher to climb too. Some bad weather would have pushed a few down more looking to feed for some calories and where the girls go, the boys follow. But the scenery sure was fine..... One of the girls checking us out from above But we did spot and glass Chamois everyday and closed to 80 yds on a shooter as we crested the top on a stalk, but he was perched on a outcropping that would have had him drop a few hundred yards after a shot, and recovery may have been impossible. Later we made a good move on another prospective animal, but he was shy of what I was after and needed to spread his genes a few more years. Thats huntin'. Hunting over I spent a few days back around the Queenstown area where there was lots to see and do, jet boat rides, hiked a hill about the same as Marcy here in NY (rained and got soaking wet LOL)...... A huge THANK YOU! to Lawdwaz here for helping me out.... With extra days after hunt, I was able to secure NZ DOC paperwork and brought cape and horns home as checked bag. Larry called USF&W at LAX for me to confirm inspection on landing and it all came off perfectly with import paperwork. Wish importing trophies was always like this!
  18. Just returned from a 2 week visit to New Zealand where I chased Tahr and Chamois around some hills for a week. Travelled from JFK to LAX, LAX to Auckland where I picked up gun permit, and finally AUK to Queenstown on the South Island. Around 32 hrs til I found a bed to crash in after leaving home. Queenstown NZ Rested up and had a day in town to start getting used to time change before driving 3 1/2 hrs North to get a helicopter ride into camp. Stayed in a converted shepards cabin and hunted private land; this area is active for domestic sheep and there were still a handfull around at lower elevations. Tahr were plentiful and had come down from higher slopes with the on coming winter. In general I had nice weather, with a few showers and some light snow; it was very windy and we had to wait for lower winds to get the helicopter ride out for an extra day, but we spent that on spotting and taking a look around. Front yard and primary hunting area; There were lots of bulls to look over and judge. I was looking for a mature bull and we set up on a few with a spotting scope to get a good look. I was very impressed with the Vortex spotter that was along. I like glassing hunts the best and can spend all day just looking over terrain for hidden animals moving out of hidden draws and gullies. Seen several Red Deer in the bottom and found a decent shed with 12 pts from a younger animal. In the small sunny bowl at top and the rock outcrop halfway up on skyline; We found what I was looking for and made a stalk from the bottom using terrain to cover the approach. Group contained a young bull, several nannies/young, and a very good bull. Closed to 200 yds on the ballistics and had a great rest with a rock out cropping as the bull hit the top of the ridgeline and seperated himself from the group. Very steep shot and let him quarter away a bit to hit him in the offshoulder. Rifle and load.......Blaser R93 with rail mount Swaro 3-12x50. Chambered in 300 Weatherby, shooting 180gr Barnes TSX sighted dead on for 200 yds. First blood for this barrel for me on this frame. He never took a step and dumped him right on the spot. Watched the puff of the exit in my scope and knew I hit him good instantly. He rolled downhill maybe 20 yds getting caught on a small flat. This bull is 9 years old and a bit over 13" along the front ridge of his horns that are chipped up from fighting; all I could ever ask for an awesome trophy bull.... Set up for some quick pics and caped him out. By the time we were done we had headlamps on, but lucked out being all the way at the top as the ridgeline ran right back to camp and only had a one slope to negotiate in the dark to get down.
  19. Man up you big pansy...... About 38 here and I took a awesome jet boat ride up a canyon today and got soaked. LOL Youtube "Shotover Jet Boat" vids. Don't forget my phone call..... Cape is drying on hotel room patio still and they haven't kicked me out, although I bet the 2 housekeeping girls are scratching their head.
  20. LOL....welcome to the real world. No more slacking off.
  21. I have a pair of Meindl Borneo that I bought over in Hamilton ON when there was a dealer years ago...real deal German ones.....favorite boots along with a pair of hot weather/ light Vasques that have been all over. But they are really tired now and seen better days. Breaking in a pair of Slov made Cabela/Meindl Hikers that seem to be doing well so far..... Wish Meindl had a regular line distributor in the States.
  22. You're not alone.... I can't get a good fit in Muck brand either. I can wear almost any quality brand hiking boot I've tried, but rubber boots and the last they use just doesn't work for me.
