  1. Try some on. Every company uses different lasts to build boots on. I'm light and lucky.....just about every boot works for me, but for example Scarpa's don't. What I wear depends on use, brand is not as important as fit and type of construction. My hiking buddy has a difficult time finding a good fit, even with aftermarket foot bed. Some of what I use; each desgn/model picked for task; General hiking and light backpacking Salomon gtx. For a stiffer sole and more pack weight, Keen or Vasque. Heavy pack, Asolo. Tip; wear socks you'll be using for test fits.
  2. I'd like to try one of these Vortex for a 22lr that needs glass. Wish it was a bit lighter. http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-diamondback-hp-2-8x32-riflescope-with-v-plex-moa-reticle
  3. Just punch out the lense groups and use it for petrol, that'll work. This is a z6i rail mount with multi zero turret I lifted from a friends photobucket account but gets the idea across.....but basically the "teeth" mate in to the mount. Mount will be here next week, shops closed for holidays. I already have the scope I'm expecting but in a standard ring mount on a R93....
  4. Do you even know how to change magnification on a variable scope? LOL Swarovski Claus bought me a 3-12 rail mount......you'd be scared of that 50mm objective. But look mom....no rings!
  5. One of my favorite signaturers, "When there is lead in the air, there is hope in the heart" Ha...I have a Woodliegh load for my 375 and 8x57.....never thought to look at the 30 cal list for a 240. Damn that is one loooong sucker.
  6. With roughly 14" of drop between the 300 and 400 I would have guessed you knew the range, but that's good shooting. What type of scope and reticle?
  7. classic; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX7BJaptphA
  8. If he shopped careful he could find a used McMillan in the Edge fill and a Timney is cheap and easy for 700's.
  9. Chop it and dump it in one of the lighter composite stocks and add some light ring/scope.
  10. FWIW my factory length 270 Win is a 22.5" barrel. Shot my ammo out of the same manufacturers "match"(24" heavier contour) barrel and it was about 55 FPS less....they use the same chamber/barrel specs. That would fit most guesstimates of giving up 25-50 FPS most folks use for chopping a barrel and depending who you read. Yes you get more drop by a bit losing some speed. Shot a bunch of stuff with it from small to deer sized under 300 yds, no drama. 140 gr A frames.
  11. Hey Larry in your travels if you spot some CCI Standard Velocity grab a brick or two and I'll have a nice bonus to make it worth your time after we settle the bill. Damn stuff is rare as hens teeth local.
  12. The UPS Stores are independent operated, and often refuse arms and ammo as a store policy. Going to a UPS or FedEx hub type facility will work MOST of the time if the employees know the rules. I have used USPS on many occasions for long guns without issue in general. Sometimes the desk clerk needs a little coaching by superviser on rules, but all in all pretty easy. Throw in a red bow and this would make a nice Christmas stocking stuffer at a fair price on a low round count gun.
  13. Of course there always more to wildlife eco-systems in general.... However Southern White were holding their own and increasing in numbers steady recent history (last 30 years or so)as the funds generated in a large part by hunting, especially in SA, made many landowners desire to hold the species. Even Black had made some modest progress in more remote and park areas. (White's are even temperement and Black more agressive in nature, making White Rhino easier to relocate and less risk to people and other animals. In general Rhino and poor in eyesight and dumb as a box of rocks, they hear well and use a charge to intimidate what they feel is a threat.) Specific to Elephant ivory and Rhino horn; poaching is the single biggest threat right now. Sometimes the good guys win, "South African authorities have cracked down on the rhino poaching trade Game rangers have killed three poachers in the past week during an escalation of armed incursions into South Africa's flagship wildlife reserve, where hundreds of rhinos have been killed for their horns this year. Paul Daphne, a spokesman for South Africa's national parks service, said poaching activity in Kruger National Park has traditionally increased in November and December before tapering off around the year-end period. Some rangers refer to this phenomenon as "Christmas shopping" by poachers. The parks service says a total of three poachers were killed in a shootout on Monday and two separate firefights on Thursday. Three poachers were wounded and arrested in another confrontation on Wednesday. Many poachers cross into the Kruger park from neighbouring Mozambique. Press Association" And, Out of Africa: Czechs seize 24 rhino horns, charge 16 traffickers (Reuters) - Czech authorities seized 24 white rhino horns and charged 16 suspected members of an international ring smuggling the prized material to Asia, the customs department said on Tuesday. The horns, believed in parts of Asia to heal illnesses including cancer and sold as an aphrodisiac, were worth $5 million, customs and police officials said. Demand has risen especially in Vietnam in the past years, leading to a rise in poaching of rhinos and smuggling of horns from Africa. Police and customs said the ring employed proxy hunters who used a practice under which hunters can get permission to legally shoot one rhino in South Africa and take the horn as a trophy, strictly for non-commercial purposes. "They were paid by the gang to hunt rhinos in the South African Republic bring the rhino horns as hunters' trophies to the EU," customs officer Ales Hruby said. The Czech authorities did not give the nationalities of the suspects. The suspects face up to 8-years in prison if found guilty. And just to be clear, my Chinese (Asian) comment is not in any way to be construed as racist. Its simply the market place destination for Ivory,Horn, Lion bone and some other animal products desired in that market. You can find hundreds of articles that confirm my statement.
  14. Sitting on the ground with an Elephant herd close including cows with calf......f'n nuts. Haven't seen that show in forever, thanks for posting.
  15. With the Chinese coming to be a economic power on the world stage, they have bought up many parts of Africa, political power goes stupid cheap to the highest bidder. The black market is HUGE in animal trade there, and many species will suffer as Asiatic groups hold onto farsical remedies and cure alls. Damn shame and glad to have seen some of it before much will disappear.
  16. How far am I willing to travel to hunt? Round trip for a 2 week hunt in May.....roughly 17,300 miles.....about 36 hrs traveling door to door, a bit quicker by a few hrs on the way home. LOL How far for a deer? Hunted one place several times thats about 80 mi. round trip, plus half days within walking distance for someone in decent shape.
  17. I have dealt with Doug, one of the owners. They also inventory demo goods from the manufacturers, used for trade shows and the like. Very good way to get an upgrade in quality for a discount price.
  18. I bought a case of S&B 196gr SPCE off of someone on AR when I first bought it.....cheaper than I could buy just brass! But I have a 200 gr Nosler Partition load for it now also, don't remember the specs offhand. Both are full power loads for sure, shot some of the core-locs someone gave me and one can tell the difference. Accuracy was poor also, so I plink with the S&B if I want. Never shot much big game with it yet, but next year I am determined to take it on a trip somewhere for a hunt.
  19. Good stuff.... Have a modern rifle in a 8x57, like to have a classic sporter at somepoint.
  20. Nice deer and liked the post about the rifle on AR.... Good luck to son using the Krag;<)
