  1. And having been on more than a few "booked" hunts..... I totally agree with you. It cuts both ways.......bad clients and there are bad agents. Personally I know the business runs on a slim margin; but I'd just send the money back and be done with it. This will just pop up over and over on a search and its cheap damage control. JMO. And its not about making me feel better; many are in the business to get a free hunt here and there....it is what it is. Seperates the wheat from the chaff. "I don't see the point in giving extra money to a booking agent / consultant, to find and book a hunt for you............all the info you need is readily available on the internet and you can have a look at and speak to the Outfitter's directly." Typically it costs you no different than booking direct. That is, the outfit pays a percentage to the agent for clients. Frankly if the outfit discounted or gave a better direct rate to a client that didin't use an agent....I would run from that outfit too. Any reputable agent will tell you exactly who the outfitter is and contact info; if they don't, I'd run from that agent too. Agents can be handy when it comes to handling funds. This is especially true when there is a trophy fee based hunt where quota vs actual take is unknown AND the problem of carrying large sums of currency to settle a bill is problematic. Another upside is that agents often get the discounted hunts first so a outfit doesn't have to run a booking service and can concentrate on their end....the hunt. Especially true when season is underway and spots are empty. I have booked both direct and with highly reputable agents......you have to research both.....but both ways can work depending on the hunt and circumstances.
  2. This isn't the first threrad here about the booking agent; http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/4974-beware-of-seller-richshunting-help-on-ebay/ And the internet is littered with threads; http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/7238550/Re_Booking_a_hunt_through_Rich There are a bunch of reasons to use a GOOD booking agent; key word is good. LOL
  3. About 25 years in Dutchess. ^^^ That sums it up for me too. 3 main properties I used to hunt are all leases now and each is about $6k a year for just deer season. They have no problem finding folks to drop the coin on it either. Now I travel more and shoot a whole lot less. Just the way it is now. Been offered spots for up in Columbia and the numbers are headed the same way. Welcome to the future.
  4. I hunt 3A on occasion, so I can appreciate that fine buck. Well done!
  5. If other companies can make a sweet trigger with no creep and adjustable poundage down into the 3's; then whats Savages problem by adding that stupid sear protection POS tin on their triggers. Other than this 220 slug gun I bought; you couldn't pay me to own that set up....it'd be the first thing ripped out of the gun. If I keep the 220 past this season, that whole accutrigger is goin'; bad enough with bare fingers, it sucks balls with even light shooting gloves.
  6. LOL..... You'd love my 26" barrel with no brake in the "light" package.....Just over 7 lbs and some ounces all up with 2 down and 1 in the chamber. . Some 200gr stout loads, and you wonder if it kicks the same on both ends? I actual like it better as I used the same frame/stock/scope set up with a 300 RUM. That'll clear your cobwebs. Shot a pile of stuff with that, the Wby is a virgin still.<<sigh>> Damn ugliest brake on the Wby barrel, embarrassing to leave it on at times. Hope know one ever has to be next to me when shooting, good for recoil.....hell on the guys ears (or ladies) next to you. I had a 99' in 300 Sav; sold it when needed a few funds several years ago. Damn fine shooter and one of 2 rifles I wish I had never parted with. Nothing fancy and just an overall pleasant to shoot gun. Like to find another at some point. Hey; anyone know where I can get them underoo's for Blaser? Them's the bees knees.
  7. Lots of wisdom in this post. I'm turning a 3 season to a 4 up north right now for a buddy who lives down my way that he just bought. Closed out a bunch of permits and going forward on new. So he has a leg up on a CO established place and a new service. Finished freeze free water last week.......new window framing and a whole new cathedral cieling frame/collar ties coming up next. LOL
  8. Sorry to hear that..... Just worked out a new service with the house and a burial replacement for my shop with the local and by NYS regs they gave a specific plan. Sitting on my desk for springtime. Took us a few hours to work out meter placement; routing, and feed options; saved me a transformer installation as I'm just over the threshold. If someone else ran the poles, not the utility; they can charge for a hook-up. Been down this road before and my local utility is easy to work with; but I know enough guys in the business.YMMV
  9. You can't ballpark throw a number for this..... You can schedual an on site meeting with a utility company rep that handles this. I suggest you do so. Too many variables for even a cost per foot yet without enough information (I'm in the building business and organized more than a few service installations).
  10. Yep.....if you want to start wearing a skirt. J/K.....don't get those frilly lace panties in a bunch you got on under the Carhartt's.
  11. Learn from it. And not just that deer are tough critters. Re focus on what you are doing out there; you owe the game we shoot that much.
  12. 30-30? Uhhhh. Them there boolits will bounce off the deer.
  13. But with a plain ol' 06 or 270 win he could plink chucks and get to be a good shot, not break the bank, and not shoot just 20 rounds a year..... And still kill anything in the lower 48 with a decnt bullet selection.
  14. OK thats funny right there and I don't care who ya' are.
  15. One of the reasons I started loading. But most guys buy a box and sight with a few and are done. I had a pesky 257 that wouldn't eat anything factory and eventually found a so-so load by hand with some help. Sent that barrel down the road and the next 2 owners didn't have any better luck than me; turned out to be a poor factory throat and the 4 th owner got a free replacement. Didn't we all look stupid for pouring money in that thing. On the other hand my 270 Win digests these Remington loaded(!) 140 A-frames like is was built for them. I found a mismarked case at cheaper than components price figuring just to plink and save the brass. Now I will just need to duplicate the powder load and keep shooting when I run low. I've never owned an 06'; but just missed buying one a few months ago; still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger on a discontinued NIB gun. LW version I wanted just as a overall go to in a takedown package. Maybe next time one comes along.......
  16. Gear is cheaper to ship; you can compress a whole bunch in a cardboard box.......your always stuck with the gun case size and around 20 something pounds empty. I've shipped stuff home in exchange for a cooler so I can bring home meat on the plane (frozen solid as per airline rules).
  17. Awe come on now...... Thats just hurtful. My 300WBY ain't one of them pimped out rosewood and diamond inlay 1960's whiteline spacer Roy's. LOL Then again I ain't suggesting one as a first or only rifle either.
  18. You can ship it right to yourself if its a long gun......don't need an FFL involved and I would suggest US Postal Service. Address the box to yourself and "in care of" XXXXXXXX and your all set. I've done the opposite and shipped my gear, and just had the gun and carry on. But with tracking being so easy now, you'd be sure that the gun made it. Technically the person on the recieving end is not supposed to open the box; just sayin'.
  19. Where's that pop-corn emoticon for this one.....
  20. Pelican. I have a bunch of aluminum cases and they've done well; but I'd buy a Pelican if doing it all over again. JMO. Only metal case I like now is one that hides a takedown gun in the bottom of a drop duffle and my ammo box that can be checked seperate if needed. You'll use your own non TSA locks on the case; you're to have they only access to contents. Ammo depends on airline.....some allow it in the case (most domestic carriers) other want it in a a different bag (sometimes that can be in with other luggage and sometimes in its own checked container but that tends to be international/other countries). Print the airlines rules out and have them with you; sometimes check in personnel don't always know what to do or whats allowed. Airport TSA or security will come over at check in and you'll show the gun is empty and sign a slip that says so.....at the NYC airports Port Authority AND TSA will check. You'll claim the case at oversized or office near the regular luggage belts on destination.
  21. Sounds like you had a good time..... You can find squirrel at Tivoli, I don't go there often, but have shot a couple most times. Good luck with the tree rats;<)
  22. Another satisfied Piranta user. I bought 250 for $15 from some autopsy supply place for the #60's. Taken pigs and deer apart with mine, and if you know what your doing can cut and break legs joints no problem. I also have the smaller #22 model for caping and everyday.
