Great thread and responses. For me it started with the tradition with family where I discovered the primal predatory instinct inside of me. That instinct is still there for me and the excitement and anticipation is as strong today as it was 42 years ago when I was finally allowed to accompany dad deer hunting. I have passed on the hunting and fishing tradition and my love of the outdoors to my kids. My son and one of my daughters like to hunt but don't seem to have the primal instinct gene. Nevertheless, I enjoy every second I spend with them outdoors no matter what we're doing. When my kids, myself and my dad hunt and fish together, it is truly special. To sum it up, it is tradition, instinct, challenge, and comeradery that does it for me.

Nice work! It takes on a whole new meaning when you do it yourself.

You kept his gun instead of pressing charges right? JK. Would've made a good video

Mr Buddy heaters are great. The only problem I've had is that they blow out in the least amount of wind.

I hunt with a Remington XP100 chambered in .35Rem. It's topped with a Leopold scope. I've taken many deer with it out to 120yds. I took a nice doe yesterday on my way to my stand as a matter of fact.

Ouch - good one! No before bandage pics??

36 years here as well and 38 with a bow. Still have trouble sleeping the night before. Sharing them with my son and dad when he can make it.....priceless!

I share a stand with a neighbor on our property line. It's big enough that we stand or sit back to back and each hunt our own property. Sometimes deer I pass up or miss go on neighbors and vice versa. We split the cost of the stand and switch off who brings the coffee and who brings the donuts. Works out great, but i am a lot colder and hungrier when she's not there.

Hunt during the week and or go to the remote areas of the property

Now we'll have to start wrapping our deer up in blaze orange tarps while carting or dragging out of the woods.

9N in stand at 6:20, first shot heard at 6:29 and counted 40+ before 7:00. I figured there would be quite a few since we had snow. Well over 100 shots throughout the morning. We are on a hill and it was calm so I could hear a long way off. Didnt see a deer until 9:50 when 6 doe trotted across the neighbors field. Couple grunts later and a yearling and mature doe headed my way and the mature doe fell to a 30.06 through both lungs. Finally some meat for the freezer after a frustrated bow season.

The smile says it all. Congrats to both of you!

I'll bet your dad has thought long and hard about it and come up with a solution that in his mind works best for everyone cuz that's what dad's do. Reading these posts sure makes me appreciate the time spent with my dad especially when my son is there too. My dad is going to miss his first opening day since i can remember and we will miss him and look forward to the day when he will be hunting with us in a couple weeks. Enjoy these special times with friends and family as life is all too short.

Just an fyi. Your property could still be legally posted if someone stole/removed the posted signs. As long as you can show/document that you legally posted the property within the past year. Signs within 660' apart, name address etc on signs.... We keep a log book every year of the date we go around and freshen up faded signs, replace signs, backings, and posts that need it, and clear brush so they are visible from a distance. And we still have to chase some cidiot off from time to time. Like the "orange flag" idea!

A tree stand I got off Craigslist for 40 bucks
FX62 replied to ronschaniel's topic in General Hunting
I would guess it's as i stated. When you put the ladder sections together it will make more sense. I didn't mean to infer that the bars themselves were angled, but the direction of the support bars is what i was saying. The loewr One pointing 45 or so degrees upward and the upper one pointing 45 or so degrees downward. If i was closer to mine I'd take a pic. Try Remington website? -
A tree stand I got off Craigslist for 40 bucks

Looks like the one I have made by Remington. One support gets attached 1/3 or so up the ladder and angles upward to tree. The 2nd support bar gets attached around the upper 1/3 of ladder and angles downward to tree. The supports end up fairly close together where they attach to the tree. Hope this helps. Good luck! -
Nice when hard work and perseverance pays off! Congrats on a great trophy!
