Awesome! Congratulations on a true giant!
  3. Congrats on your first!! I hope he's the first of many. That's a lot of excitement in less than a half hr. Right place at the right time.
  4. Awesome buck, great story, congratulations!
  5. My advice would be to decide what you want out of the handgun first before you purchase one that ends up collecting dust and by that I mean - do you want a handgun to hunt with all by itself, or a sidearm that - if the shot presents itself you'll use it, but are primarily using a shotgun, rifle or ML. Larry summed it up good with find "THE ONE THAT YOU SHOOT BEST" and try out as many as you can before you decide. I too have a Remington XP100 in .35Rem and have killed a lot of deer with it since 1991 with some 100+yds. I prefer this gun over any of the others I've shot and HANDGUN hunted with. When I purchased the XP, I was looking for a handgun to hunt with that I was capable of consistently shooting good groups out to 150yds. I shot quite a few different handguns including the Encore, savage, Redhawk in various barrel lengths and calibers and I found the XP to be the best fit for me. Good luck in your search!
  6. Pulp Fiction Hangover movies Good thread. there's definitely a few I'd like to see again.
  7. False - never had it to know if I hate it. Next poster prefers fishing over hunting
  8. True. Why is it that people who generate an over abundance of saliva feel compelled to stand closer than anyone else when talking/spitting at/on you?
  9. Stunning! Great pics and thanks for sharing!
  10. Merry Christmas everyone! A "Repealing" new year sure would be a nice gift!
  11. Greybeard, I can foward you the email if you'd like. One of the important things I remember is "respect your elders". I've learned a tremendous amount of info over the years by listening to my elders whether it be stories or advice. This post has inspired me to start a family tradition this year with each family member telling a childhood story. It will be fun (hopefully) to hear what the kids come up with.
  12. Boy these posts sure bring back a lot of memories. "The look" LOL - you knew when you were going to "get it". Not leaving the table until your plate was cleaned and watching your brother have to go to the bathroom with a chipmunk cheek full of peas and not smart enough to spit them in the toilet and flush, but instead spit them in the waste basket - boy did he "get it". It wasnt all pro-hunting, guns, and outdoors back then though. Growing up in a suburb outside of Rochester, I remeber back in the early 70's when my dad and his buddies shot 3 bears in the Adirondacks and hung them in a tree in our front yard when they returned. People would stop and admire them. However, one of my teachers at school hated hunting and had an "attitude" towards me and my brothers and sister because my father hunted. She used to make remarks about it in front of the class to try and embarass us. I certainly didn't care too much for her and most of my friend's fathers hunted, so it didn't matter to me what she thought. Here's something I found to put some things in perspective: SCHOOL 1957 VS 2013 These would be funny if they weren’t so true!!!!!! From: You should know that by today's standards none of us was supposed to ever make it. HIGH SCHOOL -- 1957 vs. 2013 Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.. 1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack. 2013 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. 1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2013 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it. Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. 1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again. 2013 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.. 2013 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist. Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with a friend who also has a headache. 2013 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English. 1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college. 2013 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English. Scenario 7: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed. 1957 - Ants die. 2013 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again. Scenario 8: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him. 1957 -In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. 2013 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy. Merry Christmas everyone! Share some "back then" stories with you kids this Christmas.
  13. Great story! Thanks for sharing.
  14. My family has been celebrating on Christmas Eve and much like you never seem to make it to the "dinner" food after grazing on hours d'oeuvres and having a few adult beverages. A lot of story telling, laughing and jokes followed by gifts and a Chinese auction of sorts. Christmas day we go celebrate with my gf's family with much of the same good food wine and card playing. The day after Christmas is a much needed day of rest or back to work for some. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
  15. 3,4,& 5 for me. I like to set goals which usually contain type of implement. However, just "getting away" with friends and family is first and foremost. One of my goals each season is for my dad, myself and my son to each harvest a deer on the same day. We've each gotten one the same year, but not the same day.
  16. Date Location of harvest Implement - bow, shotgun, pistol etc
  17. I believe the DMP application period ends Oct 1. Issuing agents are probably "prompted" to ask you for your selection when you apply before 10/1. Left over DMP's aren't available until 11/1 and you might have to request one if purchasing your license after 11/1. If the issuing clerk did ask you if you wished to purchase a DMP, and you said yes, they should have asked you which WMU(s) you wanted.
  18. I saw this article three years ago, sad story for sure.

    meat storage

I have found a big reason for keeping things frozen longer and better is a NON frost free freezer. The frost free type seems to "freezer burn" more. JMO

    meat storage

I wrap cuts in saran wrap keeping it between pieces as I wrap and get all air out as possible. I then wrap in freezer paper and tape seam with packing tape dispensor(doesn't stick to gloves). Label package : venison, type of cut, "D" for doe and "B" for buck, and date with a sharpie that doesn't bleed through freezer paper. I keep the tags separate for reference if inspected. Ground venison goes in qt freezer bags 1lb each and patted flat to get air out and stores better in freezer. They are labeled same way. I've had good luck up to 2yrs storing this way but most of the time its gone before then.
  21. Good luck everyone. Stay cool and safe.
  22. There's only one way to find out. Same trail - doubtful, but hey, ya never know. If there are hot does around, he could very well be back in that area. Good luck!
