I disagree Rob. How do they have a right to hang it? What is the difference between leaving this plastic tape out there and leaving a zip lock out there? To me either way it is picking up litter.
-
I have no issue with the tape that people use for tracking or wind detection as long as it is removed. I think those are great reasons. Tracking is one of the reasons I don’t take down tape that is brand new.

Yea balloons are all over, and beer cans surprisingly. I am always on my way out with something in the pack.

I hunt a good portion of public land and see people who have put up surveyors or flagging tape to lead to their stands or areas. I cannot say for sure it is all hunters but I think for the most part it is. Some is new, and some is so old it falls a part when you touch it. I almost always pull it down and pack it out when I see it. the only exceptions are when I know it is brand new. I have always thought of it as polluting the woods and something that was ugly in the woods, especially when people dont have the courtesy to remove it. I think a lot of that is from when I was a kid and being thought that you shouldn’t use it and you should know your way in or use cats eyes. The other reason is it lead others, hunters and not hunters, to your stand. Am I the only one who feels this way and pulls it down? Why the heck are people still using this these days?

I also have a 60csx and love it. The waypoints, tracks, etc can be imported to the Garmin map software, Google Earth, or a lot of other maps(even Bing birds eye I think). I have used it in some spots where my old Garmin and my cell phone GPS didt not work at all. My biggest problem with it is that I regularly forget to turn it off and kill the batteries. But I solved that with some rechargeable. But that’s a me problem more than anything else.

Do You Wear Hunter Orange When Getting To Your Stand?
RTGobbler replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
Bow season I am usually an orange hat, but not always. In gun season always an orange hat, in the stand I usually have it resting or hanging somewhere. I will also often wrap an orange safety mesh around my tree or rock. I will usually have a red/black checkered vest on too. When moving the hat goes on, the mesh around my belt, and the vest reversed to the orange side. Turkey season is very similar to gun season. -
Nothing this morning at all and nothing on the camera either. Sighhh.

Trimble GPS hunt is what I use. It is pretty good, my favorite of the ones I have tried. I have uses actinnature but never liked it. Seemed to have few features. I have used hunt stand lite as well, but wasn't thrilled.

Cross the rip and hunt Greene county. Loads of easily accessible state land there. It's not easy hunting, but it's there.

53 degrees, calm, and dry here in 3p.

grow is right, the town/county likely has very good tax maps. Some counties have them online with aerial photos as well. In fact if you are in Orange, and based on the towns mentioned I think you are, they have a very good interactive map. Once you zoom in enough you will see all the property lines and can also see the parcel information (owner, coords, etc). http://ocgis.orangecountygov.com/OrangeCountyBaseMap/index.html

I made a tag our of a plastic file folder. Cut the corner off and wrote my info on it with a sharpie. Attached it to the stand with a key ring. Seems to have worked well for the last few years.

People are stupid and selfish. Sorry they stole your stuff. I know a guy who always seems to have his trail can pointing at the stand, i wonder if this is why, could help but I doubt it. This type of stuff always scares me. I leave my climber in the woods all the time, public'ish land too. It's locked up to the tree but really that is not going to stop someone determined. I am usually hunting places I don't expect others to be, which probably helps. Either way I hope I avoid the thiefs because even an aluminum viper is heavy, loud, and sweaty on the walk in and out. Crossing my fingers.

Nothing but rodent and birds. Dec's sunset at 6:18 seems a bit conservative. Can still see just fine for a long ways.

You could try sterling forest. More then enough land to hunt and not see people. Might have to walk a while but there are lots of places most wont go.

tl;dr; People in the spot I wanted. Tried a new spot, saw a 6 and an 8 or 10. Not sure how to approach it tomorrow. 100th post! Rain all morning, so I stayed dry. After a b-day party for a buddies kids I got out at about 4 to the spot I wanted to hunt and setup a stand. Unfortunately there was already a truck with two tags in the window in the parking area already. Not wanting to mess with their hunt or see other humans I started checking out the map. There was a spot I found on the birds eye view this summer on bing maps. It was an area that intersects a small swamp, mountain laurel, hard woods, and some natural funnels and rocky ridges. Have not ever been there I treated it as a stalk and scout, didn’t bring my climber or anything. I started walking one of the rocky ridges looking for sign or spots that looked good. After walking for awhile I go near one of the small swamps and it was thick and looked like it would hold deer. I could also hear what sounded like acorns falling very often on the other side of it. Great, cover, bedding, and food! When could see the far end, about 60 yards, I hear a snort and see a small 6 pop up and trot about 10 yards in the wrong direction. He stood there a few minutes stomping and trying to get me the move. Finally he walks away tail down. Next I hear another deer coming from close to where the 6 was, and it was a big bodied deer. Looked like an 8 or so with a tall rack. He had his tail flagging but never ran, just a slow walk. He stopped and looked in my direction for a minute or so too before he headed into the laurels. Now I am not sure what to do tomorrow. I want to get in there but the only good tree was riiight near where the 6 was. I don’t want to push them out of the area either. The wind was in my face, and neither deer ran, so I think they were more concerned with seeing the movement. Think I am going to do in mid day set up the climber and sit the whole afternoon.

I used one of these last season. It worked great and I have no complaints. http://amzn.com/B00BI9AM1O

Pitch black and a pack of yotes is a frightening thing. Had it happen to me a few years back on opening day of gun season. Sat until dark and then started my loooong walk out of the mountain. Was walking a creekside trail and had them running on both sides yipping and yapping. No weapon makes you feel good then.

Finally in a tree fur the first time this year. Hunting an area I found turkey hunting, but never had a chance to scout this fall. Acorns falling everywhere, and two little funnels joining together. Lots of squirrel, chipmunks, and birds around. Had a flock of woodpeckers come through. About 6 or 7 one after the other. No deer yet though. Will have to see how this goes. Either way happy to be in the woods. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
