So true. Its like a the worst 45 second movie repeating forever. White farm house, corn, circle sprinkler, corn, corn, white farmhouse, corn, circle sprinkler, corn....repeat forever, it never ends.

What a great buck. Make sure to get him into the NYS big buck club.

I am a fan of the predator camo pattern more so than the ASAT. Over the last few years I have replaced all my 15 yr old gear with stuff from them. The quality has been great and it has the same open concept as the ASAT.

Haha I have done that a few times. I'll be out in sterling tomorrow afternoon. Going to do a little walking early and then grab a nice tree to climb for the evening. Not sure yet where I want to head yet though. I have a few spots in mind. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I'd second on Sterling. There are lots of birds there, but they are smart birds. I am a spring turkey junkie though, never got into the fall hunting.

COME ONE MIKE!!! Lets not talk about the little known spots!! I have only actually gone up there once, this spring turkey hunting when I found the access point. Its not a huge tract of land that you can hunt off Candle Rd though. There is another chunk of huntable land right near there that is inaccessible. Its surrounded by private land, and the only public access is via the Appalachian trail. Since your not allowed to have firearms, even unloaded, on the trail you cannot access that way either. No one at Sterling has been able to tell me how to legally access the spot. Clinton Rd has a lot of guys because it is easy to access, one of the spots I have seen a few guys so I avoid it.

I have thought about it a number of times, but have never actually done it. It sounds like a good idea to try for sure. I think trying to find a spot in one of the many swamps is a good move too. I have never had the orange army feel about Sterling. In fact I can count the other hunters I have seen in the woods over the last five years on one hand and still have fingers left over, and I have hunted a whooollee lot there in the last five years. I will say I have never hunted opening day though, only bow, regular after opening, muzz, and turkey.

Good luck! Hope it doesn't rain on you.

I'll be missing the next few days. Work, then a wedding I am in, then back to work. Maybe the weekend of the 11th. I'll be watching the threads from my office though. This will give me some more time to shoot and plan too. First few days will be scouting hunts since I have not had much time to check out all my spots. A new house and a new baby in the last few months have consumed a lot of time . Good luck everyone!

The DEC will make some exceptions on the ATV rules to pull out a large bear. I know a few times this has happened when trying to drag out of the Catskills. Just call the local officer and ask. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

In this whole thread, and maybe I missed it, no one had talked about the reason the cost of college is so high. It consistently out paces inflation by a large margin. College loans are guaranteed by the government, the lender has zero risk. If you default and don't pay the government covers it. If I remember correctly that's why they are not forgiven in bankruptcy. This leads to a market where there is a large amount of money available to people to spend. Economics tells us that when there is more money prices will rise because the market can bear the increase. Guaranteed loans are always a terrible idea, because the lender has no incentives to make good investments. They will give the money to anyone because there are only two outcomes, the person pays back the whole loan at x% or they default and the loss is limited to the cost of administration of the loan. Since there is so much free money, colleges start to differentiate themselves on price. More money means better education right? This is a race to never ending price hikes. So Lots of kids with little understanding of the financial implications, lots of risk free money, and colleges with no price competition leads to a market where too many kids go to college unnecessary and have no marketable skills. We don't need to be like Ireland and let the government regulate free college. Let the market work like it used to and have the employment market adjust. I do a tight moisture wicking poly from predator camo, followed by a heavy layer of minus33 wool. Very warm setup. On the way in, a few miles and very uphill I will just wear the poly, then throw everything else on at the stand. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

I have turkey hunted Greene county most of my life, but almost exclusively in the spring. Unfortunately I have only pheasant hunted that piece of land. I am always spring hunting on the eastern side of Blackhead/Blackdome. You could get up into the colgate lake area and see what is there. I have seen flocks of birds off the conservation trail on the eastern side of blackhead in the fall. Also there is access at the top of storks nest rd in Round Top, but don’t ever hunt there in the spring, there are no birds .

Despite the long odds, I will sign up just for fun. -
Like a few of you my wife never hunted, shot a gun, or had any exposure to much outside of suburbia. I on the other hand grew up hunting, growing gardens, chopping firewood, fishing, etc. When we met she was not against it, but not for it. She didn't get it, and for a few of things (especially more guns) she still doesn't quite get it. But no matter what she wishes me luck and wants me to tag out as soon as I can. She figures the faster I tag out the sooner I will be back at home hanging out with her. She listens to stories, eats what I cook, and lets me spend money on things I might need (or want). All in all I couldn't ask for any more than that.

Had my first little guy in May. Once the best experiences my wife and I have ever had/ Good luck to all of you!

Awesome call. There is something about the close to nature feel for wingbone calls that is great. Even if I do sound terrible

Need a new backpack
RTGobbler replied to Waldershrek's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I used to a have a cabelas pack but was not super thrilled with it. Then I used my turkey hunting vest for a few years too. The turkey vest was far better with weight distribution and organization of stuff. Last year I bought one of these fanny packs and really liked it, http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00359024W . Was much like using a turkey vest but a bit more open and the waist strap was very sturdy. I don't think I would ever go back to a normal pack at this point. They make my back to sweaty, they have poor organization in a lot of cases, and weight may not be distributed as well. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk -
I also saw a lot of acorns on the ground this weekend in 3p. Almost all of them were very small and green. I figured they were bad for some reason like G-Man said. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Got a new Win 94 in 30-30 when I was 18 or 19 and I love the gun. Its light, its compact, its foolproof, and doesn't blow your shoulder off. I typically hunt in the Catskills and can do 4 miles round trip up the mountain to the stand, and a nice light gun helps. With the new leverevolution ammo it shoots great too. Heck I'm in the middle of the woods, 100 yrds is a reeaaal long shot anyway. My only complaint about the gun is the push button safety they added to the new version. Damn annoying. This is one of the most important lessons that I have yet to fully learn. Continually burn myself and bump birds.

But it sure is awesome when the pendulum swings the other way!

I did something similar with my Android tablet. Just drop the SD card in the tablet, copy the pics and back into the camera. But even that is not so easy. I find it easier to just swap the SD cards. They are so cheap from Amazon these days(6 bucks for an 8GB card) I don’t worry about losing them.

Hmmm sounds crazy to me !!! I mean those panfish don’t gobble, hang up at 55 yards, or swim away from you with thier girlfriends when you make the best presentation possible right?
