  1. I hear ya Im getting the itch big time this year. I loggd hours and hours already this year already in the woods just watching I have some good prospects and some new land to hunt. Ive been checking and rechecking gear and stands. I doubt im gonna get any sleep the night before the opener
  2. HaHa I know right.. Im getting ready to start bulding an ark of my own this rain has done a number in my area and the surrounding areas.
  3. Thats just plain depressing.. Its sad to see that this buck wont be shown to the world as it should be.
  4. I dont really see how someone is suprised by that. they have been around for a while and I have seen three this year all around my area..
  5. Thats great man get em out there young and they will be hooked for life... My son is my fishing partner since he was two now not only does he out fish me most trips but he can also wait patiently until the fish "wake up" haha
  6. Like i was saying not trying to rain on anyones parade.. Just stating the obvious in my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.. SteveB I will be tuning in to hear the result.
  7. Listen Im not trying to rain on anyones parade its a nice buck, but Ive done photoshop for work and I can spot it a mile a way there is no way that photo is authentic. I did what you said and its not physically possible that his arm is either turned that way or the folds in the jacket made that gap. Look ath the way the jacket comes straight down and then his forearm is way off. It has definitely been altered
  8. Look at his right arm.... Not even close
  9. Last one is a fake or photo shopped but the rest are monsters....
  10. Why I Hunt......? I guess my earliest memory of hunting was when I was very young watching my father unload a nice buck that he had taken off the hill. Seeing the pride in his eyes as he grinned grunted and heaved to get it to the hoist. My uncles and some of his friends coming over after dark to come see his kill, the jokes laughter and his story of how the hunt went down. That started the fire burning deep with in me that to this day I still cant control. The night before Season I am like a kid on christmas eve, cant sleep just waiting for the time to get up and get at it. The sound of being in the woods the primal instinct that drives you to sit through a blizzard or ford through a swamp and to scale a mountain. The first time I heard a gobbler cut loose at day break, the first buck I watched break into the field I was sitting on are feelings sights and sounds I will never forget. Along with the first time I got busted by a doe and the first grouse that nearly made me soil my camo as I was creeping through the brush. The closeness you feel with nature while you are sitting and observing, is a feeling that some regretably will never experience. The way your heart skips a beat when that buck youve been watching is on his way to you. The anticipation of the crunching branches and leaves until you see your prey break the tree line. Then the kill the rush, My first deer I was fine and under control through the shot and the field dressing I thought, that is until I got in to the truck I noticed I was shaking so bad I as I sat in the back seat of my dads truck. Seeing the pride in my fathers face the ear to ear grin I had in the pictures of me holding the does head high. That is the reason I hunt.
  11. Thats great man. Tell him congrats from the sounds of it there will be a lifetime of memories spent in the woods with your little man
  12. My gun of choice is my Howa thumbhole sporter chambered in .300 WSM I have shot everything from woodchucks to elk and this thing performs flawlessly. I catch alot of gripes from friends about the round but when they shoot it they love it. This gun is a keeper for sure. Sorry I dont have any pictures I am at work. Will post later if any one wants to see it
  13. My Primary Is my Howa Thumbhole Sporter In .300 WSM. I love this gun.. I also have a marlin 30-30 for when I hunting more wooded areas also a favorite.
  14. Great story but I cant see the pictures..?? Might be because I am at work will check again when I get home.
  15. Thats a great story man and great job.. I agree completely I have a four year old who has been fishing since he was two. This year he began baiting and casting his own pole Ive never been more proud. He goes scouting with me and we spend nearly every weekend we have together either outdoors, or on rainy days indoors learning new things about the outdoors and wildlife. Unfortunately I can not have him in the woods during hunting season due to a seperation agreement, This done by my ex wife because she knew it would be a knife in my side.. > But you can bet when his time comes he will be by my side and ready. There is nothing better than the excitement seen in a childs face when they catch a fish or hit there first squirrel with that pellet gun. It is something every child should have the oppurtunity to experience
  16. There are so many things wrong with this situation. It is stories like this that i read every year that make me rage.. First if you dont know your seasons dont hunt. Just because you dont own a muzzle loader does not give you permission to use a shotgun. If his vision was blurred by diabetes he shouldnt be hunting in the first place or at least have enough common sense to bring a supplement in case his sugar got low. The hunter safety course teaches be sure of your target and beyond. the beyond is never a definite but your target should be. Also I have had to hike out over an hour in the dusk and dark on the regular and have had oppurtunities at countless deer after shooting light. Yet I have never pulled the trigger. I have wanted to and have been tempted but how can you gaurantee good shot placement. Its unethicle and sad I hope he serves a few years up top to sit and think about his friends family. Gives us all a tarnished name. This is just my opinion but I hope you agree
  17. First im glad you werent hurt, I have hunted the backwoods up there and it could have been a very hairy situation to say the least. Second it sickens me to think that someone could do that to another sportsman. I have had my stands cut out of my trees and stolen but to think someone wouild set you up to be hurt and possibly killed is just unbelievable. I hope you find the scum bags responsible. Praise the deer gods that you had gotten up late and were paying attention while getting in stand. Best of luck this season and Be safe to all hunters
  18. Good Deal, I'll be sure to send the details and photos of the monster I take this year....
  19. All right here goes this is a vey touchy subject in my book because I have seen both sides of the spectrum. As all of you know nothing is more frustrating than to see that immature spike/crotch horn that you passed on hanging in your neighbors front yard. But I was raised on land where your first buck could be anything from a spike and up after your first buck was harvested you had to harvest an eight or larger. And after that you had to best your last deer and you could never take smaller. If you took smaller you were were banned from the land for one season. This approach has produced some awesome bucks nothing record breaking yet, but there is something about watching a buck that you passed on last year grow and mature that I cant explain. However while we cant prevent neighbors from shooting immature bucks, and some still do most of them have fallen in line after years of seeing our bucks hanging. we produced a pretty strong bond with our neighbors giving us a large area for these deer to grow and mature. Now the other side of the spectrum some good family friends own a decent piece of property but all of there neighbors are on the brown and down program. It is sad to see a potentially great area be ravaged every season by literally teams of neighbors who will and have killed anything they see. On this particular property we have also adapted a similar brown and down mentality forced by the fact that you will not got a second shot at the deer you pass on today. We do let yearlings pass though and just hope they live to see the next season. I agree with filling your freezer and if that is your perogative than I have nothing but respect for you because god knows I feed my family to the best of my ability. but if you want quality buck in NY you need to let them grow. I can attest to the fact the spike horns will grow with correct nutrition and enviroment. Ive seen it happen on more than one occasion and have seen some of the bigger deer on our property come from that little year and a half old spike
