  1. He's pretty darn lucky if that is real!
  2. Looks like the taxidermy guy will be doing a few more rugs this year!
  3. It would be cool if you had a category for non-typicals maybe a simple vote for ugliest rack. I have some real uglies running around and could use a reason to remove them.
  4. Quarter it in the field. Hang it from a tree limb using a rope and one of these http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Outfitter-Series8482-Magnum-Gambrel/1206661.uts. Once hung, remove skin and quarter it. If you plan on processing game yourself at any time in the future buy the gambrel, its cheap and does a good job.
  5. I'm convinced the DEC somehow tells all game what their legal shooting times are. A guy I used to work with once told me when asked about shooting time: "If I can see it, I can shoot it!" Luckily for him he usually slept late and got cold early!"
  6. a lot happens in 10 minutes in the deer woods... that's why I choose the bottle.
  7. Everyone said it already, its a great round. BTW that guy probably sells air-soft guns.... HAHA
  8. We all have the things we do & don't buy into. One guy that hunts an adjacent property brags about how he smokes in his stand. Sometimes he drags a deer out of the woods. It's all about the wind. The deer you mention reminds me of the video of the guy who drives into another car because he was staring at someone he was attracted to. When animals are pursuing the opposite sex, they often throw caution to the wind. Many of us came about because someone wasn't being careful enough... The thing that keeps me peeing in a jug is that notion, and that our pee smells different with diet. Drink coffee and it smells like coffee. Not too many coffee plants in tee north east. That "new and unknown" scent may throw up a red flag with the deer. Just my thinking. I have been wrong before but its cheap insurance, especially when many people spend tons of money on scent free clothing, bags and sprays, which isn't my thing personally. I only do scentless soap, detergent, and spray. When I eat in the woods, I eat things deer enjoy, peanut-butter, apples. etc..
  9. Have fun! If you don't see anything don't let it discourage you. When I was young, my father and I hunted unproductive property year after year. We never gave up. Every few years we would get a deer. Lately we have been extremely blessed and have been pulling deer off a nice productive property every year. You will likely hear distant shots throughout the day opening weekend. I use those shots as energy to be more focused on the game and my surroundings. An often overlooked piece of advice for you: You will likely have to pee while in the woods. I know your not hunting from a stand but at the beginning of the season I tie an old jug (with cap) that I can "go in" to my stand. Helps with scent control. You may want to pickup one or two of those cheap collapsible water bottles the grocery store sells. You can pee in them and seal them up. Your aim needs to be pretty good though.
  10. Thanks haha! Maybe some, but definitely not all!
  11. For me, would put a popup blind out the day or even night before. Get in there super early, 1.5 hours before actual sunrise, I have even slept in a popup blind (on land I haven't had time to hang a stand on). The good thing about the popup blind is it provides you with superb cover that's real easy to setup and transport. Plus if the weather is bad, your in luck!
  12. Non-Typical! When that guy is waiting his turn to be taken down to meat & bones, he will be the one everyone is talking about. Lets be honest, we all want the spotlight at camp. I shot a big spike years ago. Large bodied tired looking old deer, however, he just had spikes ~10" each. While he was hung in the barn the evening of opening day, he was the "conversation piece". This was how it usually went when someone walked into the barn "who shot that basket si....... What the heck is that next to it?"
  13. I'm wondering how / when a "Member Title" is changed. Not that Newbie hunter is a bad title, it just feels equivalent to the company you work for hiring a new manager 1/2 your age, fresh out of college and who you are told to train. LOL
  14. A man who really knew how to play the corporate & government systems once tole me the following: "Process and procedure has replaced thinking"
  15. I hear ya TT. My dad just takes chances - too many for my liking. My stand is a few hundred yards walk from his, and it seems too far for me. I have him call me when he's in the stand (guys too old to text). I can see him with binos if all the leaves have dropped so I'm lucky for during the day but the early AM walk-in is another story.
  16. I worry about my old man climbing in and out of stands.
  17. Matches your socks - a rifle should always match your socks!
  18. Depends on the terrain but I tend to prefer stands, especially in areas with elevation changes such as ridges, rolling hills and the like. I have a stand in such a location that lets me see tons of ground. But if I had it my way, I'm a tower stand on the edge of a farm field type of guy.
  19. This isn't about ethics, its about a farmers ability to make money to pay his taxes, buy pesticides, buy herbicides, pay the fuel bill and put clothes on his kids. If you want to ensure this new relationship with the farmer remains healthy, you will need to produce. When damage permits are issued, its because there is a pest problem - the pest being the deer.
  20. All good advice for the hunter near the hunting ground, which I assume they were.
  21. Nothing like doing it yourself, it really takes the entire experience full circle. If your worried about the neighbors, use a tree limb & rope in the field to at least to quarter it, remove back-straps and don't forget about the tenderloins! Bring it home, get consent for what your about to do (if necessary), slap the 1/4's on the table, get on youtube for a how-to, grab a knife and begin learning. If you decide to jump in here is my biggest tip - Buy a food saver (if you don't already have one) & a roll of plastic to make custom sized bags. Then, pack small packets( enough for one or two people, esp if your the only one eating it). It will last you longer, with less waste this way. Also, take the time to remove any & all fat, including sliver skin, so you don't have to do it later. You may also feel a deeper respect for the animal when you do everything.
  22. Called Dicks, Says the system is working, including DMPs. Lets see if it stays up long enough for me to get in - off to town...
