Have in a couple guys from the Dec in camp, we will have the jaw of the bigger ones taken in. Also check some of the smaller ones that look like they have age on them. Smaller ones are just a guess from tooth wear. Sometimes our guesses very so much that we have it taken in just to see who is right. We had a spike taken a few years back that looked older then dirt and had really fat 10 inch spikes. He turned out to be if iirc 6.5. We had never seen this buck before and figured he was just wondering through but he could have just been elusive that we just never knew he was around.

Talk about assumptions. Just because one hunts for meat and not bone does not mean they do not have the drive or that they do not prize the experience. Not shooting big old bucks does not mean I do not see them or have the open tuning to take them. It just means I didn't shoot them. As you said it is a choice. Just as I do not shoot every young deer that walks by me. The prize for me is being out there the meat is a bonus. If it has bone on its head fine that makes good knife handles.

Largest would be 12 point he was 4.5. Next would be a 10 point at 3.5. The rest are a few 10 a 9 couple 8 basically everything down to a forkhorn. Couple of the 10 were 3.5 the rest 2.5 and under. I would say 4 in the 3.5 and one older. None of which were bucks I hunted specifaclly. They were just happened to walk in front of me at the right time. Or wrong time for them.

Why would I need a feeder? Deer are not that scarce.
-
9N and 9H have had doe tags as loans as I have been hunting. Also those are not the only places I have hunted. Add the deer I killed when I bow hunted plus the ones with gun those years. I have gotten two doe tags on first draw every year sence they started the computerized system. Plus two from the free second chance. Not always in 9N ,or 9 H but as I have said they are not the only places I hunt. Plus muzzy tags plus sign over tags. Not really hard to add up 200 or more in 35 years. I could add in all the ones I killed when hunting with nusences tags , that would be a big number.

Also luck. Anyone who gets a deer is lucky that it walked in front of them. Just because one scouts, preps, puts in bait plots and anything a person does to prepare for the hunt ,it does not mean that any deer will walk in front of them and give them a shot. Young or old that deer still has to walk through the right spot at the right time. You can sit on a bait plot for days knowing that the deer come there to feed and see nothing. Then all of the sudden one day those deer shof up. That is luck. Tell me you will kill a specific deer at a specific time and do that. That is skill not luck. Funny how if someone hunts a big buck day in and day out and never gets that buck they can say they had no luck but if they get that buck it was skill not luck. Why not say they didn't have any skill on they days they did not get that buck. I have no skill when it comes to basketball but if I throw the ball at the hoop enough times I will eventually get lucky and have one go in. Again that is luck not skill. You have said hunting and killing big bucks every year shows skill. Yet you also say you have eaten tag soup because you couldn't get the one you were after. So that means you didn't have the skill you speak of those years. Or is it that you weren't lucky enough to have that buck walk by you.

Do you really think those cavemen or native Americans were killing them because they were the biggest and baddest. More like they killed them for the food. They used every part of the animal they killed and yes sometimes for decoration. It is seen or used as a sign of strength that does not mean it is a sign of strength. If someone is bumbling through the woods and a huge 12 point jumps up and he kills it does that make him the top dog or just lucky. As I have said before. Saying you will kill a specific buck at a specific time ,and then doing so, shows you have something special. Going out time after time until you get lucky enough that the buck walks in front of you is just luck.

Been hunting 35 years. I would say 200 or more deer that I have killed.
-
Are you guys saying trophy hunting is a primitive caveman thing? That's funny. You don't buy a fishing license and not use it do you. How about a vehicle do you buy one then leave it in the garage and never us it? Do you pay for a drivers license and then never drive? Why buy something you will not use? I pay for my tag so I'm going to fill it. When they give me the choice of a buck or doe tag instead of just a buck tag then I will get the doe tag and not the buck. Or when someone else buys my tag they can decide what I use it for.
-
I don't actively pursue any specific animal. I put myself in an area where there is a chance oof anything walking by me. That spot would be in the woods. I would gladly trade my buck tag for a doe tag anyday. Never said I would shoot the BB. If the bigger buck looked to be no more then 2.5 yearso old I would take that one. If it looked to be older then that they both would walk. They both might walk anyways depending on if I felt like dragging that day. As for being an elite hunter I'm not even close. It is called making good shots. I make sure I have a good clear shot. If I don't take an iffy shot I won't have an iffy kill. If a weapon is sighted in and the person using it knows there limits with that weapon and makes sure they are taking good shots within the abilities with that weapon it does not make them an elite hunter. The first thing I say when people have a bad hit or a miss, is aim concentrate on the spot you want to hit not on the deer itself. I just love when a person says I hit a big 10 point and can not find it or I missed a big 10 point. If they have enough time to count the points then they have enough time to drop that deer in its tracks. I guess I shoot to kill not wound. None of this makes me elite or better then anyone else it just means that I have been lucky enough to not have had a bad shot. Trophy hunters don't call me at hunters baby killers? They don't say meat hunters don't have what it takes to be a real hunter and kill the big old bucks? They don't call a meat hunter a lier when the say they do not hunt for the antlers? How about when a meat hunter says you can't eat the antlers or that they prefer the taste of a younger buck over an older one? Is it not the trophy hunters who says that is just an excuse because the meat hunter does not have the skills needed to be a trophy hunter? Funny how these things and more are said about meat hunter by trophy hunters all the time. Many times in this thread alone. But yeah trophy hunters do not have a problem with someone who hunts for meat.

They did remake point break it was in 2015. Luke bracey plays utah.

Your first mistake was not calling him on his bs the first time you talked. Should have let him know you are the previous owners cousin and that you he never gave anyone permision. Regardless, even if previous owner had given him or anyone permision let them know they no longer have permision. It is your land now and you do not want anyone on it. Being nice to the neighbors is fine when you first buy property but when they start out with get go you have to stop it quick. Should have given him a week. Then just take everything down. When we first got our lease I walked the whole 400 acres took down every stand and put them in a pile at front of property after the first week of it being posted. Those who picked up there stands asked about hunting there and we're told to move on. They realized we were going to be tight on the tresspassing. The stands that didn't get picked up were given to an old guy who scraps metal in the area. After that the only ones we had a problem with was the guy club that borders us. Didn't take long for them to get the hit and now they do not even come out to hunt on there more then 3 time a year.
-
We have one on one of our properties. Been there for ever as I'm told. The thing is huge.
-
When do we every say any of the pictures we posted were of our trophies? You called them our trophies.
-
This was side tracked to what you wanted? Wow all this time you have been saying it was about bone from the start. You said that the op was about the trophy or bone as you changed the word to from the start. Now you are saying it got side tracked. You are the one who side tracked it to be about the bone and not about why guys go after it. So was it side tracked or fid it start out that way make up your mind. Everyone here posted why they do or do not hunt for the biggest baddest trophy in the woods. Why do you have to attack those who do not feel the same way as you. Nobody attacked you about wanting the trophy. You say try going after the biggest baddest only to have him make a fool out of you time and time again until that one time you get it right . That is called luck. Do it over and over until you get lucky. Try going after that buck and getting him the first time. Say you are going out and I'll such and such buck at such and such time and do it. That would be something to brag about. Not keep chasing him until you get lucky. You say they are the oldest smartest in the woods yet it seems they are harder to get when they are middle age and after they get a few years on them and are older is when the slip up and bang. For some people the trophy at the end of anything we do is not important. At least not the type of trophy you are talking about. For some it is what we get out of the experience that counts. Life is bot passing me by I am missing out on nothing. I have had these biggest baddest bucks ,you speek of in front of me more then once. I chose not to shoot for my own reasons as you always shoot them for your reasons. These or any other deer do not excite me. Turkey an grow big beards bucks can grow huge bone big deal. All animals have a special trait that sets them apart in there world it is part of nature. It is absolute nothing to get excited about for me. I and others are not missing out any anything by not having the need to get that huge set of bones. The way you put down my experience when in the woods it almost sounds like it makes you feel like you are the one missing out and that is what passes you off. Hunting is not a game for some it is an experience and that experience is our trophy. You like hunting for the bone it is a game to you. Fine hunt for what you want I and others will hunt for the reasons we want. The problem with this whole thing is the attitude you have with non trophy hunters and the way you treat them. News flash we all do not want or need the same things you do out of hunting or life.that is something you just do not understand. I think grow just hit the nail on the head. Respond as you like I am no longer going to defend my way of hunting to you. You will never understand why others do not need the trophy in life to be happy and that is your lose.

Yes that is correct. If it is down to the end and I have not taken a younger buck I will take anote older on to make sure the tag gets used. Never has it been a buck that I have been waiting for. The buck gets donated and I am out the meat bUT it gets used as does the tag I paid for. I would like to see the regular season tag made an either sex tag. I would never shoot another buck. Or just let us chose between it being a buck tag or a doe tag. I can and always do get 4 doe tags every year I would love to be able to use my buck tag for a doe. I know it becomes an either sex tag during late muzzle season but I can not always have the time to get out for that seeing as it is such a short season. Even with 8 tags I would probably run out of venison to eat even if every deer gave my 200 pounds of meat. As long as I have venison in the freezer that all I use for meat 3 meals a day every day. I prefer venison to any other meat and would like to have it every day all year. I buy 2 beef cows every year and even adding the deer I get it does not last a full year. The venison cost me nearly nothing all the other meat is ridiculous in price. Again this thread is not about trophy racks. It is about what drives a person to pursue only trophy racks. Nothing was asked about the bone at all only what makes a hunter want it.You can not wrap your head around that because you are someone who always needs that so called trophy bone in his hands, you need the praise that comes from getting that big old buck. That is what drives you and you just do not see how anyone can not want the same things. That's fine but do not try to make me or anyone else out a lier just because you do not understand what drives them. Why do you have such a problem believing that there are hunters who do not care about big racks? Is it because your business depends on everyone wanting big racked deer? Just asking not a knock at you. It is like you actually hate people who do not care about the size or age of the buck they kill. Stop thinking all hunters want the same things as you out of their hunt.Hunting means different things to each of us. Except that and you might understand why we all do not need a big old buck with a big rack to be happy. We are not losing out on anything because we have different goals and as long as we are happy with that then just let it be.

As I asked before how do we know this? Is 3rd buck aged? Is everyone scored or weighed? All we have to go by is the Dec checking a small number of deer and then looking at the number of points that were reported on the other ones . That gives us what? The guess at numbers they put out every year. Funny thing about your slob gun hunters. I find way more deer that died and we're lost from an arrow then gun shots. Just look in this forum. Every year there are people asking for advise or help because they can not find a deer. Always with the I know I made a good shot can not figure it out. Funny thing is that it is always bow hunters doing this very few times is it from gun hunting. So who really is the slob. There are deer lost from both gun and bow. The reason guns are blamed for most of it is because we all hear the gun shots, only the guy with the bow hears his shot. Do not make out like the only slob hunters are the ones useing guns ,bow season has its fair share as well. -
Actually this thread is not about trophies. Once again u miss the point and do not know what you are talking about. The opening asked what made a person want trophy racks. Thus asking for our opinion it. I gave my opinion. And stated why I do not go after the trophy racks. Nothing more nothing less as did others. The fact that you can not understand why we do not have goals of getting big racked deer is your lose. You do not want to believe it but I have gotten few 120 and bigger. They were deer of opportunity not ones I sought out. Racks (at least on deer ) do not impress nor excite me. Never will no matter how big. I would gladly trade my buck tag for a doe every year. But as I have stated I paid for it I'm making sure it is used. I am in the woods regardless. I would not be dragging out the season. As I said even if I filled all my tags in one day I would still be out there. Therefore I see no reason to kill everything I see. Our land has gotten to a point where I can see deer every sit so why would I rush things. I have sit many days during season and not even taken a gun.
-
Try actually sitting in the woods a few days a year knowing u will kill nothing. Listen and learn from them. Watch the animals and how they interact. You will see it is far from bird watching. Just because a guy hunts for meat does not mean they will shoot up the woods. The bang bang bang guys you are talking about are in it for killing something, anything they are not hunting they are killing. Big difference. But sence u just want to fight. Joe Dirt called and wants his hair back.

I for one do not shoot the first thing that walks by. I am in the woods a lot. I like watching nature wake up and unfold its wonders. I sit in the woods watching everything many days a year not jus hunting season. I treat hunting season the same as I do any other day in the woods. With the bonus of being able to put food on the table. I watch a lot of deer walk by, not because I am hoping for a bigger on but just to enjoy the show. When I get the urge I raise the gun and kill one. Even if I filled all my tags in one day I would still be out there.

Never gut shot a deer, never had to track more then 100 yards, never had a mistake while gutting, not any taken to a butcher. Every deer hangs a minimum of 4 days , not by the head. I do not expect any meat to be perfect but I would rather taste the meat then the seasoning. Seasoning was originally used to cover the taste of rotten meat. It is like spraying air fresheners in you house to so very bad smell instead of cleaning. Why should I cover up the taste of the meat. Yes it may cost a little more for good meat but it is worth it. There might just be a good taste in big old buck out there but I prefer not to take the chance on getting bad meat. Just like I will not spend money on meat that looks like it might be bad. We all have different tastes, I like eating certain things other people hate and they most likely like eating things I hate. If you guys like the meat from older then fine. Maybe not all older bucks are nasty to eat but I would rather take a deer I have better odds of getting good meat out of. Why shoot a deer or any animal if the meat might taste good. If you bought a beef cow that was tough and bad tastein would you want another one? If so have at it. I don't like throwing good money after bad and I do not like throwing a good tag after a bad one. You guys eat your old bucks not me. If I end up taking an older buck just to fill a tag I will donate it as I always have.

And how do we know the score of all the bucks killed. Did someone age each and every buck killed? Oh that's right the number or points tells us how it scored and it's age. Never have I met a gun hunter who will not take a doe. Now if you mean a bow hunter who also uses a gun then you would be correct.regardless of who kills what bucks they are still here. And have been . Why is it gun hunters always are the blame when bow hunters can't get a big buck every time they go out. -
You are welcome to everyone of them. If it is down to the end of my hunting I will take an older buck just to make sure my tag is used but it gets donated. I have never had a buck over 2.5 that wasn't tough, tasted strong and you could smell while still in the freezer. Had my fill of them when younger. We each have a different taste for foods . I like to enjoy the meat not the seasoning. How many of those breeders were kept around till they were old shoe leather before they were butchered.
-
The extra meat means nothing if I can't eat it. If you need to do more then a little salt and pepper to the meat to make it edible then it wasn't very good meat in the first place. That goes for any meat. Cows, chickens pigs are all butchered at a young age for a reason. Go to to dinner at a good restaurant and order a steak you can bet it didn't come from a 8 year old beefer. Not a slight disadvantage in taste it is a huge one. Even the strong smell can't be mistaken. It even has a strong oder before it is cut up. Not to mention the stench from it cooking. Sure all the seasoning can help that and soaking it for days in a brine can make it tender but then all you are doing is tasting the seasoning. Might as well put the brine and seasoning in a bowel eat that and throw out the meat.
