Is "deer ag" local here in western ny? Also, since I am new to mixing my own blends at the seed shop. Is there a big difference between "coated" seed and un coated seed.. germination / growth wise? I'm used to buying commercial seed and they always seem to be coated(bright colored). And my own mixed seed wasn't..?

I planted an acre of groundhog radish last year, grew monster radishes with 2'ft tall tops and they didn't even touch them until march and that was only for a week or so. I would like to try radish one more time in hopes they'll hit them, but they hammer the brassica/turnips at my place so I play it safe. does the double beam brassica have turnips in it as well?

Well, friday I bought a bag of WI TTT and a bag of Winter greens to use in one plot. I also got to the feed and seed and mixed my own blend of rape, turnips and oats in case one fails. ill compare them and see. For the price I sure hope my mixed blend does as well as the WI.. I know I will switch in a heart beat if it does. Planted the mixed bag yesterday (7/26) and plan to plant the WI this week. looks kind of dry though the next few days..

Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I'm pretty sure once the soap comes down and or once they get used to it.. there stomachs are going to make them move in. Especially as food gets scarce and winter closes is, if it takes that long. which I don't intend it to. I am going to spray it with round up this week to kill the weeds that have started to grow. I hunt scent free, wash all clothes scent free and shower scent free prior to any hunt unless coming from work ill spray the heck out of that dead down wind bottle.. Never in scented soap. Though non hunting showers I always use Irish Spring. As a matter of fact, my girlfriend just picked up dang near 50 more boxes of the soap off of coupons for less than 10$. -
Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Haha, I've got deer tracks all around in the woods but not in and around the plots edges. I don't think it will bother them in the least bit. at least this route it let the beans establish and let me get the round up to them. -
Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Haha yes, I agree to everything. Its an experiment. I was thinking the rain might wash the soap scent into the ground yes, but just in case it does wash into the dirt, I left a pass the width of my tiller around the border of the plot so I could till that soil up real deep and plant oats at the same time. That was my game plan, like I thought it was interesting so I thought I'd try it. If it doesn't work out I wont try It again. I'm sure if they don't hit it during deer season they will once the snow is on the ground. There are no bedding areas near by so I didn't think id interrupt too much. A month or so before season ill tear it all down anyways. It does sound foolish because I do preach being scent free is #1.. haha oh well. we'll see. -
Last year I planted nearly 2 acres of Real World Wildlife soybeans... they grew great, and within a few weeks the deer and woodchucks ate every single plant. I did some research during the off season and found that Irish spring bar soap would keep the deer away the best for what my wallet would allow.. Long story short, I took out a handful of woodchucks with the rifle this spring, made the plot about 1/2 acre bigger and again planted these Real World Wildlife soybeans(from Kilbury's feed in Arkport). Immediately followed by hanging 36 bars of Irish Spring bar soap, and a dozen pie tins, about 1-1/2' ft. off the ground around the perimeter of the plot. I planted these on June 20th (the field being to muddy kept me from planting til then) and hung 2 cameras over the soybeans. To this day not one camera has taken a picture of a deer or woodchuck, there are no deer tracks in or around the perimeter of the whole plot since I put these soap bars out. Where as they were eating clover there, all spring long. The soybeans are about 10-12" tall now and doing great.. It does smell like a shower when your on the down wind side but it is keeping the deer out so the plants can grow. I am impressed so far. Especially for the price (my girlfriend couponed the soap, and got 100 bars for 5$ and change Hopefully the deer will stay out for awhile yet so they can mature, even if I have to hang new bars.. oh well. Haha Thinking of taking the soap/pie tins down in September sometime. So they can hopefully start making a trip in to visit. Just thought I would share this with everyone, instead of spending hundreds on a plot saver, hot fences and or sprays.. So far this is working great. and much cheaper

It made me nervous to ever want to plant antler king honey hole again, or just not as early. maybe wait until mid-late august. I've never had a problem with WI products or evolved before (planting end July- mid Aug.). The deer always let my brassicas and turnips mature until the frost then would start hammering them. The woodchucks are more of a problem devouring my plots early while growing, than the deer. They would just lay in it and eat everything. the deer might nibble a bit passing by, but that's all. If I cant make my own blend in time, I'll stick to WI products again for this year.

Have you tried Stanton Ag in Marion, Wayne County? I used to get it there a few years back when I mixed my own lawn fertilizer.
-
I was going to ask the same question. For about 7 years now, I have planted winter greens/ TTT within the first two weeks of August here in Steuben County, and they'll get to be 12-18" tall give or take. But last year due to my first daughter being born on July 25, I planted honey hole by antler king (what I thought was super early) on July 12, they grew awesome and super fast, but they went to seed (a 2ft tall thin mustard plant) or how ever you call it by early September. So I disked them in and planted oats. What's the reason they turned so fast? junk seed? or lack of nutrients? Never seen this before, besides in spring when it regrows. If you guys are planting them throughout July? I'm just curious because I've got 3 plots all prepped and ready to seed into brassica/ptt. and I really don't want that to happen again. If I can plant them now I would like to, if not ill just wait a couple more weeks. Please and Thanks everyone.

Small hidden winter plot opinions
LET EM GROW replied to DeerSlayers's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Agreed, keep planting the brassicas and turnips. I have food plotted for about 7 years now and they eat these until they are gone( the leaf first, then the tuber in the ground- all winter long). Smaller secluded plots work best for daytime sightings i think. My 1-1/2 acre plot will last until the march-april time frame when they begin to decompose .. Whitetail institute brand "tall tine tubers" and "winter greens" is my preferred choice. I mix them together because I feel there arent enough turnips in the "winter greens" bag. Tall tine Tubers is strictly turnips. A tad more pricey but a Deadly combo!! Plant last week July - first week August. -

trail cams... which ones?
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
I sent 2 of my broken cuddeback captures in last week, for the "fix with new program" and got 2 ambush ir in place of them. I figured its a 200$ camera for 50% off. So for the 200$ spent, im getting (2) 200$ cameras. Hoping I made a good choice instead of buying (2) off a shelf for 100$/ea... Ill test these 2 new ambush ir cams out before sending the other 2 broken cuddebacks in. If these dont work Ill replace the other broken 2 with coverts I think. Tho I have heard a lot of good about the new browning cams also.. esp for the price! I thought for the money spent I made a decent choice. Any thoughts? Trail cams are tough, they can be so hit or miss.. goods with the bads in every model it seems.. -
Look who showed up for bow practice !
LET EM GROW replied to Jason118's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
She must have been watching you practice all summer, and wasnt too worried ha jk! Thats great! Keep her happy and in another few weeks she'll bring the big daddy with her! -
Awesome, makes me wanna get in stand. Ive never tried winter rye here in Steuben, but have wanted too.. I planted whitetail oats on Sept. 2nd.. they're about 8-10" tall, and there hitting them already. I should put a camera on them. Mixed them in with thin soybeans that didnt do so well..

trail cams... which ones?
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
Thanks for the advice. I didnt know anything about the energizer batteries issue with cuddebacks. Energizer is what I mainly used. They seemed to last longer than the rest. Out of the 5 cuddebacks I have, 4 do not work right. With this being said, I did get quite a bit of use out of them. Anywheres from 3-8 years. I called Cuddeback and im going to try their "fix with new" program and get some new attack cams. Hopefully this process wont take to long. We will see. I had bad luck with Moultire back in the day. Their customer service was a joke, so I stopped using them. But now everybody seems to have good luck with them so they might be worth a try. As you said G-Man, i just want a camera that takes good enough pics to where you can see everythign about the animal and or person ha, is durable and reliable for a few years anyways. I believe if you can get a few years out of a camera that is in the element 365 24/7, you're doing alright. especially for a couple hundred dollars give or take. -
September in New York is too late for brassicas/radishes .. sorry. but oats and wheat are ideal to plant right now. A forage oat will get extremely sweet, once a few good frosts set in. And the deer will devour them! atleast they do at my place. In January, I actually pulled out a handful of the oats i planted, to taste them myself out of curiosity and couldnt believe how sweet they were to taste!! Tis the reason I plant them every year!

When i sprayed round up on my clover/weeds plot last year to plant my turnips end of July, the clover didnt die either. I tillied it in with the king kutter and it still grew with the turnips, until the turnips got near 2 ft tall (shaded out?)it seemed to die out. Or the round up finally set in.. not to sure really. But it looked great with nice clover growing with the turnips

The more i read about these covert cams the more Id like to try. Customer service means alot when purchasing such tools.. primos and cuddeback arent near as good with service as to how your describing covert. Bushnell i have yet to deal with. All good cams from them so far. -

trail cams... which ones?
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
cuddeback and bushnell have been pretty good cameras. minus the fact i cant get much more than a few years out of them. but i would imagine thats expected out of quite a few cameras these days. i have always had fast trigger speed, great pics and good shutter speed(blurred moving animals) for the most part. so that makes up for my torque, hp and quality just not longevity. i just may have to look into the coverts then. especially if they're cheaper than the cuddebacks.. haha just curious as to what everyones using and the luck they have. -
trail cams... which ones?
LET EM GROW replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
My arsenel: I have 1 cuddeback attack IR, 4 cuddeback captures(2 flash and 2 IR), 3 bushnells, (1 the trophy cam, and 2 of the 99$ ones from walmart) and a primos truth 46 out of all 9 cameras, the only that work still are 1 cuddeback capture flash, my trophy cam by bushnell and one of the 99$ bushnells from walmart.. They all have there pros and cons and will all die someday but.. i was just curious what everyone was using. I always paid the extra to have the fast trigger speed(cuddeback and bushnell) I got my time out of all these cams but i was hoping for more than 2-3 years. Bushnell i guess would probably be my first choice might try a wildgame or moultrie, just really want to keep good trigger speed -
Hey all.. just wanna get some opinions on trail cams everyone are using. I like cuddeback and Bushnell the best.. trigger speed , quality you name it. But lately they've been breaking on me like the rest of em. I've tried them all just about and they all work then don't work. What do you guys have the best luck with? As far as dependable, trigger speed and quality.. thanks.
