  1. it all depends on location/size/ reason/ purpose you name it.. then comes fertilizer and lime for ph of soil.. do as much research as you can.. 60 x 500 is aprrox. 3/4 acre but i like clovers and brassicas for archery season. id spray it with roundup end of april after it turns green, wait a week or 2, disk it all in to a good seed bed and plant whitetail clover.. then come end of july, disk a couple inches deep down the center and seed brassicas in it. Give them a few different foods to choose from. like a buffet.. we all love buffets!! at my place the deer wont touch chicory.. i do not know why, but you cant beat clover! the more research, and the more you plant the more you pick up. to me its an addicting hobby!
  2. Mine listens... for the most part haha. I listen to hers as well!
  3. I now shoot 150 gr of 777 pellets, i used to shoot 100 gr of 777 pellets out of both my t/c ML.. but besides a little more kick and some distance gains, accuracy was the just the same as 100 gr. trying to remember but i think there was only 5 inches difference in drop between the 2 @ 150 yards My triumph by t/c i have setup with nikon bdc reticle...150 gr 777.. i can put (3) 250 gr shockwaves within a 4 inch circle @ 225 yards .. i was impressed
  4. i agree with grow, when hunting alone its hard to get the good pics we all dream of. but that's usually how it goes... social media will only get my cleaner photos now that I have "matured" some.. ha the murder scene photos will stay with my cell phone and friends haha

    Maybe

Isnt NY already one of the states with a shorter deer season, compared to that of the other "big buck" states? i know you can hunt hunt after the first of they year in several states. Maybe mixing the seasons up some and extending the entire season. with a break in between somehow. I recently became a father so my time is limited to when i can get out in the woods, but i enjoy every minute im out there. Bow season being my preferred time in a tree.
  6. I have shot rage 2 blades for 6 years now. knock on wood, not one has let me down. Switched to the hypodermics this year, shot 2 deer, both with the the hypodermic head 1st one accidentally went deep into the spine, after working it out it came out all in tact and in working condition, just a little dulling on the blades, but the tip still super sharp. 2nd deer of season, zipped through the deer and buried into the dirt. still razor sharp and in tact. I'm impressed so far, with the original 2 blades and these hypodermics.. especially the tip on the hypodermics!!
  7. Dont think about the deer at all!! Just your shot, once you figure out that your going to shoot at this animal, if your not comfortable at full draw, like when you practice, don't shoot.. it's damn near impossible to cure your ailment, that's just hunting and the adrenaline rush, we get as hunters enjoying gods creation! If its a buck forget about thems horns! haha practice practice practice any and every which way you can
  8. Thanks. And there are definitely some bruisers around the area! I went with the left turn for the same reason basically, within the 30 seconds from me seeing him at first and shooting him, he looked at me with the semi sneek pose to the left.. so it was an easy choice.. plus it shows the brows off pretty well.
  9. Undecided... Either my T/C omega .50 smoke pole or 30-06 savage 165 grain corelokt... depending on what stand i sit..
  10. This looks awesome, great job! My buck has the same type frame, and he is going to whitetail creations tonight. I do believe I am mounting him with this same pose, after seeing this. only with a left turn. is there a name for this pose?
  11. I must say, for being a volunteer service, you guys bust your butts off. I hired finger lakes deer search sunday 11/8/15 and they were great guys driving all over surrounding counties to help us in need. They recovered my buck in a very short time. I hope for the service you guys perform, people are kind enough to give donations. I know i sure gave a decent donation for the effort put in and the gas consumed. Either Way I am very thankful! I really enjoy reading these stories now, after witnessing this first hand yesterday. I did as they asked us, to keep behind them and to not worry where or what the dog does.. stating the dog (which was a golden retriever) will not follow blood trails... He did a darn good job
  12. congrats on the buck, clean ethical kill. Looks to be a solid 2.5 yr old to me.
  13. Congrats, score is irrelevant.. True Trophy right there!
  14. 11/7/2015 Avoca, Steuben County 8P 4:15pm Single lung and liver hit... let the deer lay over night.. Called the finger lakes deer search just to be safe.. Josh Prouty came from Hornell, NY with his beuatiful 7yr old Golden retriever "Rosston", I was not going to chance it, liver hits do not bleed much, and he was in big serious thick golden rod and briars patch.. The retriever found him in 15 minutes.. about 150 yards from the "crime scene". I knew his general whereabouts (2nd bed) if he hadnt made it even further, but again i wasn't chancing it.. Ive passed a TON of bucks through the years, and this guy was #4 on my hit list this year so I couldn't pass him up!

The temps and wind do not seem to want to cooperate this year, compared to years prior.. and it doesn't look much better in the near future .. No good cold days for awhile it appears in the extended forecast .. Halloween weekend had good movement here in 8p
  16. Archery season gives us an opportunity at the animal in its natural state, and a somewhat primitive manner. Strategically set ambush points, close ranged..Not running 100 mph from the hammers of others firearms, you cant shoot deer after dark legally, and after deer are blasted at a time or two, an adult deer anyways, will basically be nocturnal for some time.. The archery tackle during rifle season, is the equivalent to bringing a knife to a gun fight ..
  17. My lighted knocks definitely help with knowing where the shot was but, unless i see the deer fall from the stand, ill wait at least an hour or two before i track, if i know it was a good shot. If the deer expired in 5 minutes, it will be there dead when i get to it 2-3 hrs later anyways.. un pushed.. But ill replay the whole scenario over and over again.. any shot back from the lungs, ill wait 6-8 hrs or more depending how far back.. I would rather find the deer dead and closer, rather than pushed and stressed even more.. and maybe never found again.. been there few times too many
  18. we all have missed (atleast i hope im not the only one:)) no matter what we are using to hunt with. rifle, shotgun, XBow or compound... You might be the greatest shot on the range or out back behind the house.. But its a whole different story in the woods up a stand, at eye level on the ground with that creature.. trying to go undetected and pull off a shot with your weapon of choice. Your adrenaline will make you do some crazy things.. That animal is not always going to stand still like our range targets do.. On top of that, anyone who has hunted for some time has wounded them too, if anyone has yet to wound a deer, well props to you. but it happens, especially with the less experienced hunter, we learn from mistakes. ill admit ive wounded 5 deer in my deer hunting day. all were lethal shots but 1, i just decided to track the deer too soon.. and push it further away, my fault. live and learn. the other shot was just a bad bow shot...(wrong pin, hit the leg, deer lived for years) .. Ive learned above and beyond from all these, believe me. The keyboard doesnt type itself, the car doesn't drive itself neither.. The gun does not shoot itself, its the person behind each of these whose in control.. The gun, the bow, the rifle, and the XBOw are all as good as the person in power of these things.. Get proficient with yourself and better all of our odds
  19. very true.. as long as we can do our part and not join there fan club...
  20. Speaking of out of season kills, I work with a man who finally fessed up...he had been quite distant and quiet lately... well He didn't read the rules and regs to close for 2015 deer seasons... Hunting in antlerless only zone, he thought October 15th was the start up day for Antlered harvest... Well like the book says, He was wrong.. He actually ended up harvesting the biggest buck of his life, a 150" 10 point.. dressed 210lbs... called in the harvest to DEC hotline that night... and to his surprise, the DEC being at the butchers the next day.. gathered his deer... meat antlers and all.. went to his house with the buck, and wrote him citations.. followed by a court date... We will see how lucky he gets off... just a fine, or maybe even loss of license for some time?? This is why people need to pick up the book or get online and do there homework.. sucks to be him, though hopefully he learned from his mistake.. i dont really feel bad for him
  21. Heres something a bit funny yet wrong.. Not sure who here is on Facebook, and has heard of the "NY hunt club - A group for the NY hunter" page Some quite "strange" questions asked on that page but.. One asked what the X-Bow start date was for this year, because he was "confused" thinking it was supposed to be the 1st of November... Wont say names but one person to answer/respond to this persons question is or was anyways, a certified archery safety course instructor and has been for years!.. he stated that "it started the 1st brother" ......... Seriously!!??
  22. I was always against them myself.. but if it will helps people make better shots and more ethical harvests. Im all for it.. Or get anyone in the woods who can not draw and hold back a bow for any medical or physical reason.. awesome, perfect solution.. I have yet to see any X-BOW ruin any of my archery hunts so i really do not have a reason to be against them. The X-BOW is just as accurate as a compound... its all in the one who is shooting it.. Hopefully everyone does the animal the justice and practices with whatever weapon your using to the point of being comfortable and accurate at whatever range you choose suitable.. i do believe there should be a safety course as well, especially with the power of a X-BOW.. Maybe not a 2 day course but at least incorporate the X-BOw in with the bow course or gun course.. It is the concept of a bow, but fired like a gun in my eyes but still deserves some sort of safety program like the bow and gun. Also i heard the DEC was thinking of making manditory safety courses for muzzle loaders soon too for anyone who hasn't purchased a mz tag before.. Maybe just a rumor.. but i wouldnt be surprised
  23. Hopefully this is South of Bath and not north.., Thats the only thing that gives me the creeps, snakes.. idk why. Haven't heard of any around our place in Avoca yet but I am sure they're there some wheres..
  24. Love the rage.. My buddy shoots the original 2 blade... one year he had shot at a doe as he released she stepped and turned back at the same time quick... long story short... one of the blades from the rage sliced a good cash across her "cheek" left a very good blood trail and she was dead in 150 yards.. he wasnt aware of the shot placement until he got to her... whether its luck, or the broad head or both.. rage hasn't let any of us down yet i picked up the hypodermics this year. love them buried it into bone and the tip is still super sharp along with the blades.
