  1. Kills me how someone 30 years old can think that a 70 year old man probably hasn't already walked in your shoes a bit... but I guess I was naïve too at 30, then I got older and smarter... in fact I'm pretty sure Doc may have already walked a little in my shoes as well... you should learn to place much more credibility in the wisdom of your elders... just a healthy bit of advice.
  2. That "crisis" ran it's course... a new crisis had to be invented. Without a major environmental crisis always at hand the EPA would have nothing to do.
  3. LOL.. I refuse to even entertain a conversation with someone that gives any credence to the global warming farce. As far as I can tell environmental engineers spend all of their careers searching for any "environmental crisis" that might help justify the unnecessary need for environmental engineers.
  4. I commend you on your description of what needs to be done if we are to implement a OBR in NY... it is important to realize that just issuing more DMP tags to hunters that aren't killing does, or even many deer for that matter, makes little sense... issuing more tags to those that do makes sense and would be a huge part of introducing the OBR... you have definitely thought this out from a true management point of view. That was the answer I was looking for, but wasn't necessarily expecting... I like it.
  5. What would be the benefit of a one buck rule to overall deer management in NY...?
  6. All the wood stoves in NY couldn't have as much impact on the environment as just one day of powering cities like NYC, Vegas, DC and others. Funny how nobody ever sees that. Just the trash that is removed from NYC alone is more of an environmental hazard and it is trucked and barged somewhere else other than NYC to become someone else's problem.
  7. Coyotes killing penned up chickens and goats is a different issue than the decimation of deer herds. Nobody is denying that coyotes are opportunists and will kill when the advantage is in their favor... especially when they're hungry... this debate is about hunters that think coyotes should be eradicated because they're decimating deer herds.
  8. So we're still going to have this debate based on maybes and theories... again, lets do this logically and give evidence that coyotes have damaged the NY deer herds over the last 70-80 years, or was that irreversible damage? And have the coyotes decimated the deer in the Catkills over the last 10 years? The answer is.. NO. The same answer as every other area of NY
  9. I can't remember but I think the grill ban was passed too.. then squashed or never implemented.
  10. Okay lets do this logically... Show me any proven evidence that coyotes have caused any real damage to the deer herd across NY.. or even better, irreparable damage... and remember, coyotes have been in NY for 70-80 years, maybe longer, no one really knows for sure... so this shouldn't be too hard. I'll save you a lot of time here if you like by letting you know you won't find any... because none exists... the hatred of the coyote in NY comes as a result of a myth perpetuated by bad hunters that have trouble seeing and killing deer... somehow lots of good hunters started buying into the myth.. and it's snowballed into the big fairy tale folk lore that we know now. Any animal that has been part of the ecosystem for nearly a century is a cog in the machine and an important part of the balance of nature.
  11. I hope this goes over as well as the no grilling law they were thinking about a few years back.. it never got off the ground once the people got word of it... No barbequing? Yeah, like that was gonna happen.
  12. Did it earlier... but done just the same. Funke is definitely one of the good guys!!
  13. Although that could be true... the biggest overpopulation in NY was when the coyotes weren't here and hunters weren't keeping up at all... since the increase in buck and DMP tags, longer seasons and the introduction of the coyote we have seen progress in herd numbers across most of the state... yet we still, according to the DEC are barely keeping up... and with fewer numbers of small game hunters I'm sure the coyotes have helped keep little varmint numbers down as well. I'm not positive that getting rid of the coyote now would be such a good thing. But I'm all for hunting them as a means of keeping their numbers in check. I just don't see the need for their total eradication.
  14. So you're mad at the coyotes for doing what they do naturally? How much could the numbers be down when you're still shooting quite a few coyotes still? Even if what you say is true, you have no idea what kind of negative impact that might have on the rest of the wildlife in the area.. you can't eliminate or break a cog in the machine and expect the machine to run correctly... mass killings of coyotes without any care about the impact on the rest of the ecosystem is irresponsible... and it is not theory.. it is fact... what you may be experiencing could be a lull in the storm. Either way... you have become the bane of good management by being a consumer and not a conserver... there is a difference.
  15. Funny... but I used to be an avid member years ago.. I jumped on the coyote haters bandwagon just like everyone else hoping to eliminate the "huge" threat they might pose on our deer herd... then I did some research trying to find out info on how I could reduce the numbers maybe on our property and their real impact on whitetails in NY... once I learned the facts and educated myself I realized that I had nothing to worry about from coyotes.
  16. Coyotes tend to come in on the peripherals of where you're calling from rather than straight in at you... they will try to get downwind of the call before coming in... not a big tip, but one I have noticed over the years that helps.
  17. Right...I am sure that coyotes have a place in the deer management equation... but no more than other predators impact overall wildlife numbers... they are a part of mother natures plan. To single them out over the greatest predator (man) as having the greatest impact on deer numbers wouldn't make a lot of sense. Sometimes hunters fail to give themselves enough credit for why deer management in NY can be a challenge.
  18. Yeah he looks like he has some potential.
  19. I agree and I have no problem with coyote hunting... in fact, it's fun.. and very necessary to keep populations at a manageable level. I think some hunters have different opinions of what those levels should be though. And... honestly, I don't really know what those levels should be either.. I just know that the whole "coyotes are decimating the deer herds" is nothing more than highly perpetuated myth and they pose no real threat to 99% of NY's deer herd.
  20. We have seen the same results on our property (1000 acres) and we haven't really hunted them at all. Seemed overrun with them a few years ago, but haven't seen or heard of them much at all in the last two years. We have killed two coyotes over the last 6 years during the deer season. So, based on anecdotal evidence... both our approaches have been effective.
  21. As much as I hate doing business with Time Warner... I still haven't found anything better than their high speed internet.
  22. I think you tend to forget sometimes that these are just ideas an opinions on a forum. Many of us, like myself, don't really have an issue with how things are right now as far as deer hunting goes... just because I have opinions and ideas doesn't mean it matters to me one way or the other if any of them are listened to or implemented. I fight the fights that I think need fighting like gun issues... I really couldn't care less what the DEC does in the way of deer hunting... those days for me are long over... I am all about enjoying my time here on earth and that carries over to my deer hunting. I will always have an opinion and even a few ideas, but those will simply be so that I can get in on the enjoyment of the debates on here and little more. Being an activist for your hobby's takes away a lot of time that you could be just enjoying that hobby... I'll let you young guys do the fighting until you're ready to take your place in the "just enjoy life line" with me when you get a bit older.
  23. Even a bunch of dumb coyotes still have to eat... and yes it was a great hunt.
  24. Hunting coyotes for sport and fun is way different than hunting them thinking you're doing anything noble to help the whitetail deer... one is definitely persecution in its intent and the other is merely having fun hunting. If for years you have been killing big numbers of coyotes off the same piece of land, that ought to tell you something about the effectiveness as an eradication method.
