  1. Congrats... now get your camera and hunt with that... or find a friend and film his hunt.
  2. If I have to make a choice of who to give (even unbridled) decision making... it would be the game department before the government. Unfortunately, sometimes the only choice is the lesser of two evils.
  3. This doesn't really mean much because NY is lucky to have a B&C buck in any given year and I remember years with none... I can count on both hands the number of B&C bucks in the last 5 years. But, having said that, the number of entries into the NYSBBC is down the last two years after a record number 3 years ago.
  4. I think the term "clean kill" is just justification for taking the easier way to harvesting a deer. Let's face it, hunters have gotten lazier and are always looking for the latest gadget to make hunting and harvesting easier... the least effort possible is more preferred by most hunters. The challenge given up for just a harvest. But, it is what it is.
  5. Anyone that hunted in PA years ago remembers a State overrun with deer... very few bucks over 1.5 years old... buck:doe ratios of 30:1... etc. etc. Although I'm not so sure PA has such a great management system... the management change was much better for the deer than what was in place prior... which was management that benefited just the hunter. What some would call low harvest numbers or low deer numbers are probably just numbers getting closer to where they should be... but there might still be a lynching in PA...
  6. Beautiful buck and mount.!!
  7. I think they are as efficient as they need to be if hungry enough... with the high population of small mammals and rodents in most habitats in NY the need to expel a bunch of energy to catch a turkey might not be necessary on a regular basis... but they are opportunists so an occasional turkey dinner is probably on the menu.
  8. As some of you probably would have guessed... I don't own a gun with a scope. I shoot exclusively iron sights or a peep... not to say that I won't ever own one... especially if the eyesight gets bad enough that it becomes the only option to continue hunting. For me I'll just have to accept that a new rifle with irons will be a special order in the future... I realize they just aren't the norm in this new age of making hunting easier... well, some of you might say more efficient, not easier
  9. Although I don't believe any property owner actually owns the deer... I do think that there is a "possession is 9/10 the law" when the animal is actually on the property. Obviously, if the neighbor shoots the deer as it walks on to his property he takes possession of that deer... if he shoots it on your property without your permission that becomes an entirely different issue where I believe you might be entitled to the deer
  10. Still a couple feet in the woods of Redfield... maybe a few weeks of rain and warm weather will open up the road in. My wife and I have the itch!!!
  11. Who was talking about the KXL? Our Pres. doesn't want ANY pipeline... nor do any liberals... so your comment is quite expected. So, again, it looks like they need to build a pipeline... and if it helps you keep up the liberal argument, yes, the KXL too.
  12. I think youngsters should learn the traditional way to shoot a bow first... learning the fundamentals without the gadgets helps them focus on the mechanics of shooting the bow with less else to concentrate on. Once they get well acquainted with the bow they will easily transition to a release.
  13. Sounds to me like we need a pipeline... but our Pres. doesn't seem to think so.
  14. 60# Martin Recurve and cedar arrows with Zwicki 2 blade broadheads... 20 yards and in!!
  15. Now that my friend is a deer rifle!!! Very nice!!
  16. Absolutely agree... the reality is they (DEC) fall way short of our expectations.
  17. They still should be following game laws.
  18. I agree that biologists are not to blame... they do have the capacity to get done what needs to get done with the proper guidance.. my observation is that they aren't and shouldn't be the end all - be all when it comes to managing wildlife. Yet they obviously should play a rather big role in the process because they are in a position to help get things done.
  19. Although I wouldn't put all my faith in the DEC... I still believe they have the best avenue to get things done because they're on the inside. I don't have any problem with hunters managing their own property... it's theirs and they can do with it as they please within the laws. But I certainly don't want the average Joe's making the decisions for the whole state when it comes to overall deer management... I do however think that hunter input should always be considered in the process.
  20. The Quick And The Dead... Sharon Stone (HOT) and Gene Hackman... she leaves a bullet hole in his chest that the sunlight at his back shines through.. casting a light spot in the dirt on the ground in front of him... then the terrified look on his face that he has been shot by her... then she shoots him between the eyes. ..great gun fight movie in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Psl57DHHUSs The scene starts at the 7 minute mark on the video
  21. Many of our "so called" biologists are not necessarily better schooled in whitetail biology than some of the hunters that have done their own research on whitetails... most biologists knowledge come from isolated research projects in problem areas where knowledge, numbers, data can be skewed based on the intensity of the problem... I attended a deer small deer forum a few years ago at Montezuma Wildlife Refuge... with their 3 biologists present... their knowledge of whitetails you could put on the head of a pin. They knew that their was a problem of deer populations on the refuge damaging food supplies and devastating important habitat vegetation necessary for other animal populations on the refuge, but had no idea how to combat it... They were asking opinions from guys like me, if you can imagine that..lol And, like always the Federal and State bureaucracy along with money problems inhibited any good resolution to the problem... the forum left me shaking my head as to what the DEC can possibly get done on their own in NY.
  22. My pet peeve is the buddy that says "if you get one just call me, I'll be glad to help you get it out of the woods" and when you call him there is always an excuse why he can't make it...lol
  23. I personally couldn't care less what any anti anything thinks of what I do, am, think, or say... the only people that take them seriously are other nut jobs... nothing we say, do, don't say or don't do will ever change anything they say or do. I'm pretty sure they couldn't even keep up with what I just said. If we lose our hunting privilege it will be because we were not the good stewards of wildlife conservation that we claimed to be... of our own selfish doing and not because of some anti-hunting group.
  24. You don't know much about hunting in Africa do you?
