As some of you probably would have guessed... I don't own a gun with a scope. I shoot exclusively iron sights or a peep... not to say that I won't ever own one... especially if the eyesight gets bad enough that it becomes the only option to continue hunting. For me I'll just have to accept that a new rifle with irons will be a special order in the future... I realize they just aren't the norm in this new age of making hunting easier... well, some of you might say more efficient, not easier

game ownwrship..it's starting to change..good or bad.

Although I don't believe any property owner actually owns the deer... I do think that there is a "possession is 9/10 the law" when the animal is actually on the property. Obviously, if the neighbor shoots the deer as it walks on to his property he takes possession of that deer... if he shoots it on your property without your permission that becomes an entirely different issue where I believe you might be entitled to the deer -
Still a couple feet in the woods of Redfield... maybe a few weeks of rain and warm weather will open up the road in. My wife and I have the itch!!!

Who was talking about the KXL? Our Pres. doesn't want ANY pipeline... nor do any liberals... so your comment is quite expected. So, again, it looks like they need to build a pipeline... and if it helps you keep up the liberal argument, yes, the KXL too.

I think youngsters should learn the traditional way to shoot a bow first... learning the fundamentals without the gadgets helps them focus on the mechanics of shooting the bow with less else to concentrate on. Once they get well acquainted with the bow they will easily transition to a release.
-
Sounds to me like we need a pipeline... but our Pres. doesn't seem to think so.

Now that my friend is a deer rifle!!! Very nice!!

Absolutely agree... the reality is they (DEC) fall way short of our expectations.
-
They still should be following game laws.

I agree that biologists are not to blame... they do have the capacity to get done what needs to get done with the proper guidance.. my observation is that they aren't and shouldn't be the end all - be all when it comes to managing wildlife. Yet they obviously should play a rather big role in the process because they are in a position to help get things done.
-
Although I wouldn't put all my faith in the DEC... I still believe they have the best avenue to get things done because they're on the inside. I don't have any problem with hunters managing their own property... it's theirs and they can do with it as they please within the laws. But I certainly don't want the average Joe's making the decisions for the whole state when it comes to overall deer management... I do however think that hunter input should always be considered in the process.

The Quick And The Dead... Sharon Stone (HOT) and Gene Hackman... she leaves a bullet hole in his chest that the sunlight at his back shines through.. casting a light spot in the dirt on the ground in front of him... then the terrified look on his face that he has been shot by her... then she shoots him between the eyes. ..great gun fight movie in general. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Psl57DHHUSs The scene starts at the 7 minute mark on the video

Many of our "so called" biologists are not necessarily better schooled in whitetail biology than some of the hunters that have done their own research on whitetails... most biologists knowledge come from isolated research projects in problem areas where knowledge, numbers, data can be skewed based on the intensity of the problem... I attended a deer small deer forum a few years ago at Montezuma Wildlife Refuge... with their 3 biologists present... their knowledge of whitetails you could put on the head of a pin. They knew that their was a problem of deer populations on the refuge damaging food supplies and devastating important habitat vegetation necessary for other animal populations on the refuge, but had no idea how to combat it... They were asking opinions from guys like me, if you can imagine that..lol And, like always the Federal and State bureaucracy along with money problems inhibited any good resolution to the problem... the forum left me shaking my head as to what the DEC can possibly get done on their own in NY.

My pet peeve is the buddy that says "if you get one just call me, I'll be glad to help you get it out of the woods" and when you call him there is always an excuse why he can't make it...lol

I personally couldn't care less what any anti anything thinks of what I do, am, think, or say... the only people that take them seriously are other nut jobs... nothing we say, do, don't say or don't do will ever change anything they say or do. I'm pretty sure they couldn't even keep up with what I just said. If we lose our hunting privilege it will be because we were not the good stewards of wildlife conservation that we claimed to be... of our own selfish doing and not because of some anti-hunting group.

You don't know much about hunting in Africa do you?
-
Can't get much more exciting than that!

Actually I have softened a bit as I've gotten older... lol The funny thing is I do have a soft spot for domestic animals, but not so much for wild animals... not sure why that is... I'm pretty sure I'm a little messed up.
-
LOL.. we humans are complicated animals that have emotions that wander all over the place... I guess we can be sensitive and understand reality at the same time. As much time as I spend in the woods I see very little in the way of winter kill in my area

Unfortunately suffering is a big part of mother nature's food chain... and we're in the chain like it or not. I agree with you that if you're the kind of person that is bothered by that suffering it shouldn't matter what the animal is... and yes, seeing the suffering is much different than just knowing it happens. But, I am one of those guys that wouldn't try to, for example, interrupt a coyote taking down a deer... or a hawk killing a rabbit...and I don't get all balled up over possible winter kill or even the death of a wild animal... it's all part of nature's balancing act and will forever continue in spite of us. My point really was that I rarely give it any thought unless someone brings it up... it just is what it is.
-
Though I don't revel in the thought of death in any manner... nature running it's course doesn't phase me in the least. This is what is... and will always be. As for worrying about the deer population, it rebounds so quickly that usually you will only feel it for the upcoming season with numbers usually returning to normal the following year. I do agree that Mother Nature can be cruel... but she has a plan that has worked for eons. The greater tragedy is when man interferes with the natural order instead of helping it along or leaving it be.

Given all the costs involved with taking ones kid on a youth waterfowl hunt... It baffles me how an extra $25 would be the deal breaker for the OP to not take his daughter hunting. I realize that sometimes we feel like we're following some kind of principle or trying to make a point, but letting a duck stamp stand in the way of introducing your kid to hunting sounds a bit foolish to me. If it was a $250 stamp.. maybe.

Would love to see those pic!!

As much as I think it would be exciting to have an elk population in NY... common sense would say that having another large game animal, especially in the ADK's, would create huge competition for food which is already in short supply. I don't know of many large open grazing areas in the ADKS, but I have yet to see all 6 million acres. If there was a feasible way to introduce elk, I think it would already have been done. It certainly would make for some added exciting hunting here in NY. It will really be something if the moose in NY ever reach a huntable population.
