I don't see the point of going to find the missing tines if that's what you mean.

I use Winchester 375 grain sabbots. The only deer I shot with it died in in 20 yards and left a great blood trail.
-
Nope. Taking the exam in 2 weeks. It's for the Danbury CT PD. But, if I get the security job I will have to carry a pistol.

searched for 2 hours today. Didn't find any sheds but a shit ton of beaten trails and deer crap. Also saw 6 deer at about 60 yards. They just stood there and watched me. Funny thing is that I had more/better shots today on deer than I did during the season. Great hike though. Very relaxing and good exercise.

I know but it looks good that i took initiative to get a permit. I've been doing some research. I think I'm going to go with the Glock 19 or 23. Both are compact. Just not sure whether to go 9mm or .40 cal. I do plan on shooting very often so I'm leaning towards the 9mm due to ammo being more affordable.

Yeah I was just looking at the Glock 17 for about $500. Any particular brand for the .380?

Hey fellas. This isn't a hunting thread but I figure a lot of you guys have pistol permits. I applied to get my pistol permit over a month ago. Got a call back from the Pistol Bureau and they gave me an appointment of September 14th to get fingerprinted and get my permit. I'm currently seeking employment as a police officer or security guard, both of which I would be required to carry a pistol. Well, I thought I'd have 6 months to research what pistol to get but if everything goes as planned, my appointment will get moved up to within the next month. So, I need to find a good pistol to purchase after I get my permit. I figure I'd go 9MM as a first gun and since that's most likely what I'd be using. I don't know much about pistols, I only have shotguns and rifles. Hoping to spend about $300. What features should I look for? Any brands to steer clear of? Open to all recommendations.

Also, NYSID Number, License Number, Date of Issue, Expiration Date, and Code at the top of the state applications is all something they fill out, not me correct?
-
Thanks guys. I'll do carry concealed.

I know very well it doesn't guarantee me a position. Just want to be safe and do things the right way.

Hey guys. I'm doing to paperwork to apply for my pistol permit in Dutchess County. I will soon by applying as a security guard in Westchester County and I spoke with a guy who works there and he said I should be working on getting my pistol permit. I have also took a few police tests which I would also need a pistol permit. I also would like to hunt and target shoot as well. Now, on the application is says check one of the following: -carry concealed -Possess on premises -possess/carry during employment I am not sure which one to check, the 1st or 3rd. I need it for this security job, or a police job is the former falls through, but I'd also like to hunt and target shoot with it. Any one have any idea?

Doctors amputated 3 inches above his ankle on Monday. He's doing ok from what I've heard. The guy who did it and him and still friends.

ooo good point. Not sure I'll have to find out.

people get lazy and make dumb decisions.

http://www.cbs6albany.com/news/avery-1281600-friend-hunting.html He's my good friend's cousin who I've met and target shot with a few times. Nice guy. His buddy shot him in the foot with a 7mm mag. They cleaned it up but looks like they'll amputate the foot tomorrow. Just a lesson. Always be careful and never let your guard down or take any chances with firearms. Safety first. Also, always make sure you truly trust the person you're hunting with!

I think I'm going to get a savage axis .243. Very common round for coyote here and I hear a lot of people taking deer with them.

New here! Question about shotgun scopes!
blackradio replied to blackradio's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Well, I never got a shot on a deer but the scope was great. Very clear, never fogged and I could see through it until pretty much pitch black. I dropped my gun once and smacked the scope pretty good so I put a few rounds through it and it didn't move at all. Can't wait to use the combo again next year. -
Thanks guys! I'll have to check a few out at Dick's or Gander Mountain (I hear they have a good used selection too). I'll really have to consider the price of ammo too. While it will be a hunting rifle, it would be nice to be able to shoot it every now and then with my pals and not break the bank. Is there any caliber around the size I need that's relatively inexpensive compared to others?

Rain and high winds tomorrow...some questions...
blackradio replied to blackradio's topic in Deer Hunting
Came up empty handed. Slipped into the laurel pretty damn slowly and quietly and no deer to be found. But there is a ton of the stuff around so they could be in any of it. No deer for me this season but I learned a lot for next year. -
so would a .30-.30 be a good round for both?

Rain and high winds tomorrow...some questions...
blackradio replied to blackradio's topic in Deer Hunting
I think it's supposed to be freezing rain/sleet tonight then as it warms in the morning it's gunna turn to rain and go into Monday. I'm gunna go out midday and try to sneak in. -
This is hard to believe. Plus that's about $350 of ammo.

I'm in shotgun territory here but want to get a cheaper rifle for coyote hunting and for future deer hunting use as I may be getting some property upstate. I guess I'm looking for a .223 or 243 cal round. Single shot is ok. Anything decent under $400?

First year hunter here. Logged 42 hours hunting so far this regular season. I saw 6 deer all season, had a clear shot opening day on a small doe but decided to pass in hopes to see a bigger doe, and two days ago I jumped 5 does hunting with a buddy on unfamiliar land but no shot. So, no deer for me. The mountain I hunt has a ton of acorns around and a lot of thick mountain laurel thicket where the deer bed. A lot of deer activity. I've hunted a spot for the past 2 days where there's a rock face overlooking the mountain laurel (which you cant see into) and there's acorns all around. I've been sitting and waiting hoping I'd catch deer going in or out of their beds. Nothing. Got cold yesterday and sick of not seeing anything so I figured I'd try to slip into the laurel where I see tracks in and out of. Well I made it 30 feet in and it sounded like a tital wave. A bunch of deer get up and make a break for it. 100 feet from where I was sitting for hours. If only I could sneak into the thicket without the crunching leaves because I know they're in there. Tomorrow is the last day of the season and I'd hate to sit home because of the rain. Really determined to get a deer (have doe and buck tags.) 2" of rain and 20mph+ wind gusts. Wind is supposed to be blowing in the opposite direction of the thicket, in my favor. Is it a good idea to use the wind and rain as a sound cover to sneak into the laurel and see if I can find them bedded? Any tips? I know they're there.

They're staying put in the thicket and mountain laurel here. Only come out if you push them or at night.
