It's all good. I am alot more patient as time goes by. I do hope to be capable of a Saturday hunt. Winds are looking right for the stand I moved this past Sunday after watching a mature buck go by twice on the same trail. -

Thanks for asking but no, third day of being full blown sick. Started going downhill during the weekend but not better yet. Would have likely gotten out tonight here in NY but I'm not even remotely feeling up to it. -

Find the right scrapes and you might be in business. Late October after a rain event should see bucks freshening up scrapes. Invariably I’ve seen it more in the AMs as bucks take longer to make rounds. Might consider getting right to bedding if you know a suspected area as the closest scrape to bedding area is likely communal and would be the last one freshened on a bucks way back to bed. This week is invariably the week a lot of hunters realize they missed an opp. A lot of those for me surrounded scrape hits in daylight. -
We take a similar approach. We have once piece that has literally one hangable tree on it in a finger jutting from the woods, lol. But it borders no hunting property. Our other is the first huntable parcel outside of a village. Trade yuppies/antis though instead of hunting pressure, for that one.

Our place is North Central. Amazing state, alot like NY's variation from east to west, is MO from south to north. Some big deer there.

Unless I get one this week on a field edge, I may go doeless for the first time in bow season that I can recall. I won't shoot one in Ohio or MO. #1 The price to do so out of state is high IMO, and #2 I don't like losing time in the stand after driving that far. I've had several opps here in NY but they've all fallen on days that back up to work or driving to Ohio. Since we process our own, I try to make sure I have time to process after. I definitely have an itchy trigger finger though and a pair of old does that are on the radar due to scenting a few stand spots out.

Where in MO?

I think deer learn this in high pressure areas, that rain is more safe to move in. JMHO. -
I killed my 2014 buck using that in conjunction with a decoy. He couldn't see the decoy and was walking way so I grunted and he stopped. Snort Wheeze and he became interested and ultimately found the decoy. I can recall a few bucks that turned inside out and boogied and a few that responded positively. A few wouldn't stop for a grunt series but did for the wheeze before moving on. I do remember one buck doing it back to me a few times. That was fun, but he never came out of the brush. That was peak chasing or breeding I think. I know I use it more as a last ditch call rather than a first one; maybe I should switch that around. I've only heard it maybe 10 times naturally occurring unprovoked and most of them were not in NY. Could be age structure / ratio related, maybe. I also can't recall hearing it outside the main phases of the rut. My hunting partner shot his buck last season with a snort wheeze call. Three bucks came out of a bedding area and started splitting up. One broke toward him 100 yards out and he snort wheezed. That buck went from a standing still to a jog in on a string and stopped for the shot perfectly.

I think the real takeaway is that they have the right ground in between two farms that cover 1.5 sq mi that don’t allow hunting. That’ll age up deer quick. Lifetime buck right there.

Wife and I both took tests and were negative. She tested Saturday and me on Sunday. Since the time the pandemic started, this is the first time where I was pretty confident I finally caught it. But, nada. Some other bug I guess. That said, if I still don't feel better as the week progresses I'll probably insist on another. Hope you are holding up well. -

10-day forecast looks like a lightswitch goes on, on 11/1. Rising pressure, with lows in the mid 30s and highs in the upper 40s/low 50s. About as nice as you can ask for in the first few days of Nov. That will be a tough week at work for me. I don't get out of jail until 11/6. -

They coming for ya, pitchforks, fires, and crosses. The whole 9. Congrats to you on punching a tag. -
Everyone is free to make assumptions or not. Maybe I'm just getting older/wiser (in my own head) in the past year or two that the book isn't judged by the cover all of the time. We never know what someone's internal thoughts/motivation/etc. are. Maybe the guy was buying two - one for him and the wife, and the kid was being a monster all day. Maybe the kid blew his money on Roblox or whatever that is called. Maybe the guy was a jerk. No idea, but I just know I don't have enough detail to make a third hand assumption. Yet, the mob here is saying he is the worst dad of the year with conviction based off of a 70+ year old man's 60 second interaction who didn't know the guy from Adam - I'd hate to have y'all on a jury.

I knew alot of people, most of whom have passed on, who would take a stand with a nipper flask. Can't say I ever recall a safety incident due to this, nor can I recall where I thought someone was inhibited. Seemed to be generational as that died out somewhere between my Dad and Grandpa's generation, at least in my circle. I remember brandy and schnapps being the choice of the day back then. Now, I do recall people drinking after the hunt is done in camp/club, and paying the price the morning after. Some of them probably woke up with a higher BAC than the guys taking nips. I distinctly remember getting blasted on the evening of the last hunt of the season, with a big dog push planned in the AM. It was the night McGahee had his knee blow out in the college championship. Card game went to 12-1ish and the 4:30 wake up call was a great lesson for me. Never repeated that in deer camp ever again. That last morning hunt was hell on earth. I generally won't have a third beer at night if I am going hunting the next morning, and normally never make it to the second beer. I get too pissed off at wasting a hunt now. Now, a summer hunting work party...we got all day/weekend.

As much as I'd love to pile on, making assumptions sometimes can backfire. I'm sure the story is more of a zinger because it was beer and not a soda or something non-alcohol. But, what if the parent just got done teaching the kid a lesson about spending his discretionary money wisely. Maybe the kid just came from blowing his money on something like comics, games, etc.? There have been times I have been at the counter and told my kid no, pretty much for that exact reason myself. Kids not hearing NO in life is why we are where we are. I have zero idea the guy in the story's background, but I won't make assumptions based on that one encounter with limited one person POV. Also, I have zero desire to give my kids everything they ever wanted, maybe I am a minority here. That's how you raise kids who become adults that think they should be given a living wage by the government, instead of creating value from what they choose to accomplish in life.

Pulled cam and confirmed the buck I saw this AM, 11 pt. Moved stand, never trust Onyx. Property line was 30 yards off as we verified. Feeling like dog shit. Partner and I heading home. No PM hunt. Wife sick too but negative Covid test.- 9078 replies
