You know what, i went into the bathroom the other day in a store and, as usual, pee was on the seat. I then had to spent 20-30 seconds wiping it down. Or, the person who had peed on it could have simply spent four seconds before me lifting it up. Why didn't he? Because he just does not give a damn. People really are filthy animals. I still see people throw trash on the road for no reason other than they simply don't care because it doesn't affect them. I'm sure plenty of people borrowing access to private land have acted like pigs. I hate when I see a beer can or wrapper on the public land I've been using. Pick that up

I was talking to a guy last year saying how much time bowhunting took from me last fall and he said he experienced the same. Did it for a little while, got a nice sized buck, and stopped. Now in my opinion if he genuinely liked it, he should have just cut his time back so that he didn't feel so much he was killing family time instead of just stopping outright.

Guessing NY doesn't prosecute that often for a parent daring to let their kid climb into a tree stand

I bet that is a great area to hunt. I can honestly say I have yet to see a coyote ever in NY for some reason. Been here a decade.

I can almost taste that. It is indeed a beautiful evening. Went out for a bike ride just now. And last night it was 57! Amazing. I can't believe we are in for massive heat again this week. Tired of this summer!

I'm just hoping one day she isn't like "So, you've never shown me the shotgun you bought, can I check it out?" Um, yeah honey can you just stay upstairs for like just a couple of minutes first...<runs down stairs, clang, clang, thump, clang>...Okay, come see that one shotgun we agreed I would buy!"

Any tips on hiding a crossbow from my wife? Honestly at this price, it seems hard to go wrong.

Had a co-worker like this. last year he went out once and couldn't even be bothered to sight in his gun beforehand, having fired (and missing) a deer the year earlier. Went to a friend's place for one morning this past season and got nothing. He calls himself a hunter but I would call him merely a hunting permit purchaser. In other words, if you use the treadmill every 2-3 weeks, you can't call yourself a runner

I think I got this idea from a movie. What if the arrow were spiked with some radioactive substance that can be tracked with a device up to a fairly high range but has a short half-life so it's not a risk to humans. Looks like I'm talking about this (just googled it): http://io9.gizmodo.com/how-the-soviet-union-tracked-people-with-spy-dust-1705065672 Er anyway sorry back to shot placement

So this is something added to the arrow so that as blood leaks out the blood is now spiked with a powder that helps it show under certain lighting? If it worked, that would be awesome. But, I also have a hard time believing it's going to work for long. Surely the initial bits of blood will rinse the area

Trail cams and treestands set to explode
Core replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Seems like an urban legend but if that letter is legit I will believe it. But I'm not clear: is it somebody who hates hunters and is modifying others' cams, or is this intended to bait thieves so that they hurt themselves? If the latter that would in fact be a potent urban legend to persuade people not to touch others' stuff. -
Still turned off by Bear's hotel shenanigans years ago to be completely honest.

Then, heat aside, I'm not sure why you've not left. Sounds like everyone already has. Just make sure your air conditioning doesn't break! The shocking thing is some people are employed shingling roofs down south and they do it in the summer. I've never done it but I imagine the closest thing to hell on earth is shingling a roof over black asphalt when it's 96 outside.

Can you guys honestly say that pricey arrows--say $60/6--group better for you than the cheaper carbons like $30-40 for 6? I started out last year with $30/6 easton carbons with long fletching and a whisker biscuit. The ones I still have now have wavy fletching, so I bought some $40 carbons with blazer fletching, similarly spined, and frankly I have a hard time saying the new arrows group any better than the tatty older ones. Generally my 5 arrow groups at 50 yards are about 7 inches if I'm totally honest with myself.

Yep, it often goes along with "I don't have time to", which is in almost all cases complete crap. If you work full time you may legitimately not have time to build a complete house by yourself on some land you own, but I've never met a person who didn't have time to work out, or take up a hobby or whatever. My younger brother said he was jealous that I went hunting last year and got a deer. But when I told him what to do to replicate it suddenly he's just too busy. But playing video games takes up a lot of time, so, I guess he didn't have time to get into hunting after all. BTW I'm a cookie guy, actually my favorite are those cheap icing sugar cookies at walmart for like $3/box, the ones that are like little cakes. I will throw down half a box of those like it's nothing.

Can deer see the red IR light? Yes, I googled before asking!

Thanks both! -
I need to spend more time at this. I paper tuned a bit last year but haven't done it this year. I also think it's something I need to learn and practice more because like you say a shop won't do it, and it's not something that you need a lot of tools for, just patience. Now that my phone can film at 240 FPS I actually tried filming my arrows in slow motion to see how they are leaving the bow (in theory one shot every foot of travel). Probably 500 or 1000 fps would be needed to really benefit well from that, though. What I'd love is for a really accomplished shooter to have a go at my bow. I'd like to know what it's actually capable of with me out of the equation.

Keep it to himself and/or family/friends. To reiterate: I don't slight somebody for this. If you've dropped a small fortune buying land and pay property taxes for it each/year, I sure wouldn't expect a free ride to hunt it. I don't even think the huge acre after acre of farmland near me is heavily hunted. I am not even sure I heard a single gun shot last year (in previous years I certainly have). I see some cars parked here and there but not a ton. Interesting you say this. Last year I had to drive 40 min to where I hunt on public land with not many people on it. Many times on this trip I saw the same car parked 4 min from my house. When I finally got a deer, the same car was still hunting that property later in the month. Now, it's possible he was on his third deer, but I like to pretend he wasn't!

If you like your lease, you can keep your lease.

The question has been raised many times: Why do some deer clearly notice a trail camera firing off? Are they attracted to its noise? The smell? Can they see the faint red glow on [these days] less expensive cameras? So I googled, but a lot of threads are from years back, and I know the understanding of deer continues to grow. Most mid and high end cameras now have "black" flashes so that at least a human being can't see the IR emitter. There are definitely videos online of deer staring intently if not outright worried at a camera filming them, but they could be concerned with the sound of the IR filter, not the IR itself. Does anybody know if this question has been conclusively settled by an actual scientific study of deer vision?

Lots of truth to this. I have a habit lately of leasing vehicles. There are worse habits, but from a purely financial perspective, it's not ideal. As for kids, each one of mine have been a nuclear holocaust on our finances. I could go into great detail, but it's nothing none of us haven't heard before or experienced first hand.
-
I really think something like this should happen. Or even just get SERIOUS about a statewide, state-endorsed leasing system. Something to hook up the tons of hunters with the farmers. I understand if you have a bunch of land and a bunch of deer you're not going to necessarily want any old person showing up, but what if you have a list of hunters who've registered with NY, NY then keeps a history/reference system of some sort, reaffirms that the land owner is 100% not liable for anything if it is part of the system.
