  1. Well a very happy ending to a very frustrating and unsuccessful bow season. Shot this bear at my camp in WMU 9T on 11/17/16 In Cattaraugus Co. Town of Portville On a afternoon hunt. After a very long and frustrating and unsuccessful bow season back home, it was time to head to my camp for the gun opener. I headed down Thursday morning got settled into camp. My plans were to get a few more bow hunts in before the season closed at sunset on Friday before the gun opener. Rushing to get things unpacked, get settled in and go pick out my tree for my climber for the afternoon hunt I managed to get into the stand by 3:30pm. It was one of those afternoons that everything just seemed right. After only being in the stand a half hour this fella worked his way right to me and presented me with a 20 yd. broadside shot. The hit was solid and I watched him take off. I waited until dark to get down. Saw that there was pretty good blood and marked the direction he ran off to. I backed out as I wanted to get some more light and by now other friends had showed up to camp. I headed back to camp, told my story to others gave it another hour and headed back in to track him. It was a solid blood trail and found him 150 yds. away from where I shot him. The rage 2" Hypodermic's did a number on him!! He ended up weighing in at 165 lbs. Needless to say it brought a very happy ending to my uneventful bow season and allowed me to close the season out with a bang!! I will be doing a full mount of him. Thanks for listening
  2. No luck folks. Even had deer search involved with their dogs. Very disappointing. Its happened to us all but still hard to except especially on a buck of this caliber. Biggest he has encountered in his 25 years of hunting.
  3. My good buddy shot a whopper of a buck this evening around 6:00pm in WMU 8F. Within seconds of releasing the arrow he was calling me as he thought he heard the buck crash down and that he needed help tracking. I told him I would get there as quickly as possible as I was just picking up my kids and heading home. From the time he called till the time I arrived there an hour had passed. We waited for another friend to show up and began our track. By this time it had been a good 1 1/2 hrs from when he shot. He had already located his arrow once he climbed down from his stand as he had a pass through and the arrow was full of blood. We began tracking as the blood at first seemed spotty but then began to pick up with good signs of blood. The blood was bright red and had some bubbles in it usually meaning lung shot. The blood trail was strong and consistant and continued on for a couple hundred yards. It stopped and came to a split in a deer trail. I went one way and my buddy went the other way. I shined my flash light ahead as what I had thought was his deer when I saw the antlers I began to realize it was a skull of a buck. A dandy indeed. A very symmetrical 10. A bonus for me for my efforts I suppose. We continued to look for his deer but had no such luck. We know we never bumped him. We decided to back out and call deer search. The deer he shot was bigger and taller then this rack and another 10. We are hoping for luck tomorrow with deer search and their dogs. He feels the shot may have been a little forward of the shoulder but angling down as he shot down from a treestand 30yds away. Will keep you all posted.
  4. Where abouts in 8F are ya hunting chas? I am also a 8F'er. Yesterday am was my first hunt of the year as I have had no interest in shooting does only. I hunted yesterday am, afternoon and this morning so far and have yet to see a deer. Pulled my cards on my trail cams. Action is normal for this time of year. Lots of doe's all hours of the day. One real nice buck so far, night time activity.
  5. Buy it!! Its hard to find land these days let alone butting up to your current property. My suggestion buy it then subdivide maybe 3 or 4 - 1 acre parcels for building lots only on the rd. frontage. You can recoop some if not all your money you bought it for. have some land taken off the tax map and you still get to keep the best part of the property. Also consider having it logged if there is any valuable timber and you may come out on top. My 2 cents. Good luck with it.
  6. Yes for sure its tradition for me!! Always deer hunt on Thanksgiving. It is almost like opening day all over again only better. Just something special about harvesting a deer on Thanksgiving. I am very thankful to able to hunt........ Here's a pic of my 2012 Thanksgiving morning buck. Not a trophy to most but it was a great hunt lots of activity in a perfect setting with perfect weather conditions. Truly a memorable one for sure!!
  7. Hate the Saturday opener!! Wish it would go back to Monday. I to am a camp hunter and we had traditions as well as mentioned above. I wish it were always the Monday of thanksgiving week. Ever since the switch to Saturday as silly as it may seem our deer take at camp has dropped drastically.
  8. Well archery season has come to a close for me. Tonight was my last bow hunt of the year. With a packed schedule between work and personal and knowing I was not going to get out again before leaving for camp Friday for the gun opener weekend. So I decided what ever presented the perfect opportunity I would take. It has been a long and slow archery season for me. Did not see a whole lot of deer and or action. My trail camera's said else wise hence the reason I was holding out till the end but just did not connect. Perhaps during the gun season. Either way he came in at 4:00pm giving me a perfect 15yd broadside shot. Drilled him through the heart ran about 60yds and expired. Nice little basket 8pt. Exciting hunt, no tracking, easy drag, freezer stocked, & a fine memory of the hunt what its all about. No trophy for the wall but a memorable one
  9. Some good shots, activity sparked past week

  15. Its tough to hunt state lands for geese since they typically are flocking towards fields and open water. Your best option is farm fields, cut corn, winter wheat, etc. Look for fields with geese in them already ask for permission. Best to go out a few times with experienced hunters, you will need decoys, layout blinds, etc. Good luck
