  1. Larry,I went out twice and searched for about 5 hrs total. He must have went further than 300 yds, I combed the area as best I could. Still feel shitty about it.
  2. I don't want to waste those guys time if it not very likely they will succeed.
  3. They can't do much after snow and rain, can they?
  4. yeah,I didn't know it was going to start that early with the snow. I expected him to be close to where I shot him,but looks like he wandered further than expected. He did not look very distressed, that's why I thought a clean miss at first. Until I checked my arrow. I think I hit back and low, judging by the hair and I did not notice any wound on the opposite side as he walked away. He wasn't that hunched up,but his tail certainly was down the whole time.
  5. well,I went out again and gave it another whirl, got soaked pretty good but really combed through the goldenrod and no sign of the deer. I am certain I didn't bump him last night,he went out of sight and I only checked the arrow, did not follow the trail at all. He must have walked further than I ever expected. Thought I did the right thing by giving him till morning, but in hindsight that is not true. Maybe should have gone back out in the middle of the night. How long do you guys wait before trailing an obvious gut shot? I read anywhere from 6 - 12 hours.
  6. I did pretty extensive grid search, but that goldenrod is frustrating. The deer did not look to terribly fazed when he walked of last night. He didn't bed after the shot,at least not within 100 yds.
  7. You probably enjoy successful tracking as much as I hate loosing a deer. Especially if it is that fresh on my mind...
  8. Well,it happened to me. I was hoping I could skip this experience, would not have minded that. I shot a buck last evening at 5.45 and thought I had a surprising clean miss. He just ran a little ways and then stood there for 10mins without giving me another shot with the bow. I had an arrow nocked, but he walked away slowly through cover. He got out of sight and I climbed down and checked my arrow. Guts and white hair and some blood. Crap. Checked where he stood and a puddle of blood, not a huge amount for standing there for a while. I scanned the trail and there was blood, but I figured I had better back out,the arrow really smelled foul. I figured I would pick up the trail this morning to give him plenty of time to expire, but when I got out there was already an inch of snow on the ground. Not what I planned for. I walked in the direction he took of in,this 40yds wide stretch of woods between two fields of goldenrod. The upper one is about 10 acres and the lower one is 6. Pretty hard to scan thoroughly,I did a lot of zigzagging. Also checked the closest source of water, about 600 yds away. No sign of the deer. I am pretty disappointed in myself, making a deer suffer through a slow death for nothing. I really thought I had a good shot, but maybe I dropped my arm. All the target practice I put in and then I still mess up a 20 yd broadside shot.
  9. Sitting in an oak tree here in 4F and nothing is happening. Did the deer not get the memo about being on their feet today? Thought this would be a good spot, found a few beds on the way in. I guess things can change any second.
  10. The bucks I ran into yesterday were busy making scrapes. Good sign, right?
  11. I had a fun afternoon. I was stalking to my climber I left in the woods last week on a friends property, the thing is so heavy. Had to go through some thick spruce plantation and jumped something out of there, then stalked on the other side and found some nice rubs. Little later I pop over this shelf and catch movement close by. It is a buck only 40yds out. Bad news is he is downwind. I crouch down and nock an arrow and am trying to close the gap a little and he is alert but also curious. Then I realized there is a second deer,a forkhorn. The bigger guy comes walking towards me to figure out what he is smelling. I think he is a 1 1/2 year old,six points but not that big. Well, can't shoot a deer head on with the bow,he got within 20 yds but never gave me a decent shot. Then they walked of and I tried to catch up and he started coming back again. This time he came to 30yds but again no shot. Nothing to show for but a lot of fun and having learned something. I love bowhunting!!!
  12. I am about to head out and do some still hunting/ scouting today. Saw a bunch of deer this morning on my ride to town, one was a fat forkhorn in the middle of a field. They are moving in this snowy stuff here in 4F. See if I can arrange a close encounter with one...
  13. Gee,no frost yet? Where are you located? Here in 4F we got hit pretty good, the valleys more than the hilltops.
  14. After leaving my stand this a.m. I had all of a 3min drive home and saw a doe bedded in the woods not far from the road. Decided to come back and try to stalk her, well, turns out ot was a group of six including a forkhorn. They new something was up but kept coming back, but stayed too far away for a shot. Fun to stalk the buggers on the ground. Back in the house having a snack, then I will look for the group again,I think I know where they were headed... The bucks definitely seem to be following the girls now...
  15. just watched a lone doe at 45 yds,was hoping she would come closer, then a fork horn starts chasing in the wrong direction. At least some action...
  16. Headed out in a few minutes, trying to catch some deer coming out of a hayfield. Wind is perfect for it,see if the deer know the plan...
  17. good luck with those boys, nice to know they are around...
  18. Wow,what an afternoon I had. I climbed in the tree around eleven along a field edge with a bunch of oaks in the woods. Sat for a few hours, then saw some deer perpendicular to me about 100 yds away. After a really long time they worked their way over to me. Looked like an old doe and two giant fawns or maybe even last years. I knew I was going to wait for the big doe. Now the two young ones are right under my tree, but i have a bunch of branches between us,good cover. The old doe comes in and I can not get an ethical shot on her. First she quarters to,then branches in my way, then she is right under me as well, bad angle. She walks to the other side of tree,by now I must have drawn 3 times on her. Then she walks back looking around. Finally she is broadside at 12 yds,but a little tree is in the way. I am about to loose it,then a flock of turkeys comes right under my tree while the deer is right there as well. So eventually she walks of into some thick stuff without ever having given me a decent shot. Unreal, but very exciting. That is what bowhunting is all about.
  19. I am in the climbet for the first time this year. Got in around eleven and I am hopeful for this spot. I might try rattling one in shortly. The acorns are dropping all around me.
  20. Got to install a new window in my house, the last of five new ones, then hopefully into the stand at the top of my property. Really starting to feel like fall now.
  21. I haven't seen much for rubs or scrapes. One spot last year was loaded with scrapes and nothing there yet. Maybe they are in different places this year. Last year was under a bunch of apple trees, this year I have to check to oak stands maybe.
  22. Pretty much the same thing happened on the doe I shot a few days ago. She was slightly quartering away and the arrow must have hit the opposite leg on the way out. I never did find the front half of the arrow, but the back third was in the chest cavity. The opposite leg was broken where the broadhead hit. It was a muzzy fixed blade and did a pretty crazy amount of damage. Went through two ribs and not quite the leg. I only shoot 55 #. The deer still made it about 80 yds. Amazing critters. I would have died on the spot...
  23. Saw a biiiiig doe on the sit this afternoon. Must have been an old dry girl, all by herself. She didn't come closer than 36 yds and was pretty alert the whole time. Figured I am not that desperate yet. She eventually got downwind of me and snorted some, but then circled way around and ended up in the same spot as before. Kinda funny
  24. I am trying a new spot as well, hope the deer come through here on their way to some apples further down the hill. There was an active scrape nearby late last season as well. I have to rest my other spot for a while.
