  1. Just not right in that position, some might disagree but it looks like a difficult shot angle.
  2. Hey turkeyfeathers You won't regret getting in on the archery fun,but your better half might... I am so hooked on bow season that the gun opener is a big letdown for me.
  3. I think the guy just used the same trick I use for fishing pictures, where you extend your arms all the way to make your catch look bigger. That buck is probably only a 1 1/2 year old....
  4. I think it is time you get one as well, you have built up credit with the time you put in. Now for a withdrawal...
  5. I bought a bunch of toys this season. Rattle bag, grunt tube and doe bleat. I have used all of them sparingly and can report that I had no luck whatsoever with them. I wonder if the deer get to hear enough of any of those to become alarmed rather than attracted. Probably depends on the situatuon, really. But I do not hear deer vocalizing very much in the woods,so they use it sparingly too. I am still a newbie though, just my two cents.
  6. Very happy to be able to post in this thread again, this time with a buck. I also managed to take pictures before I half skinned the deer,I am learning something. First buck ever with the bow in my second season,I am happy as a clam. I did let a bunch of smaller ones walk in the last few weeks, but this one wasn't getting away. He did not read the script, came in from opposite direction. He was being cautious and sniffing around quite a bit, think he might have caught some whiff of my trail walking in. He did stick around and even looked at me a couple times, but my cover was good. Eventually I was able to raise the bow and draw back. Had to hold ot for a minute maybe before he turned almost broadside and gave me a shot. He took off and I listened for him and he stopped after 30 yds, then started crashing through stuff and then I heard his last breath. Found him easily and then started work to get him out of the woods. It was a double lung shot, entered just below the spine and exited lower third of ribcage.
  7. My turn with a picture of a buck wrapped around a tree.
  8. I got my first buck with the bow yesterday afternoon. I had set up in a spot that had quite a few rubs and some scrapes a little ways off. Found a great tree for my climber,it had two smaller Beech trees next to it,which gave me excellent cover. I was set up 45 yds from a corner in a field. Only bad thing about my spot was the noise the dry beech leaves were making, rustling in the wind. Saw nothing until 4.30,when I was standing up looking behind my tree, away from the field, since I figured the deer would be coming from there. Then I heard,or maybe sensed something behind me and turned around ever so slowly and there was a deer only 25 yds away coming towards me. A lone buck, and he looked good size to me. My heart rate went way up,funny how that works, but there was some back and forth until I was able to bring the bow up and draw back,so heart rate went down. I shot when he was 16 yds out, never saw where my arrow hit. He takes off and I listen to his track through the trees and then hear him crash and exhale for the last time. I waited a few minutes in the tree, then started to pack up and climb down. I found my arrow, clean pass through with lots of bright blood on it. Followed the blood trail for practice and found him only 40 yds from where I hit him. I hit him pretty high, not too far below the backstrap, but it worked out since I was close to 25 feet up the tree. Found a triangular hole in each lung,he expired fast. Not a trophy, but I figured I had better not shoot an eight or ten pointer for my first with the bow, because where do you go from there? It was an awesome hunt, love it when things come together.
  9. Getting ready to head out soon. Buddies brother saw a nice buck this a.m.,out of range though. Have high hopes for my spot, two corners of woods touching by two corners of fields almost touching. Serious horny buck travel route methinks.
  10. Also just made it into the tree. Hadn't been here five minutes and a flock of turkeys came by. They looked very tasty, but I don't have a tag. Deer next, please.
  11. I am taking the chance with the rain here to stack my leftover firewood in my basement close to the furnace, then it is high time to fill the basement with new firewood to get me through the winter. If the rain lets up this afternoon I will have to go and sit by a scrape line somewhere. Somebody will be out to freshen it I am sure. Hoping to do an all day sit tomorrow,I want to see the slob I have some nighttime pics of in the daylight...
  12. I love stillhunting as well and got my first deer with the bow that way. I admit luck played a huge part, but still. I also find myself getting impatient sometimes and rushing to the next rise or something, and that is exactly when I bump deer. It is not easy to be really slow, seems like I always want to end up somewhere, but really the way there is what counts. Got real close to a 6 point, only a 1.5 year old, this season, but I haven't managed to sneak up on a big one yet. Only my fifth season,so there is time...

    Timing

I agree with the randomness factor completely. It almost seems as if deer do rounds through their range, like hang out in one corner for a few days and then move to a different spot for a while. Sort of like a rotation. Just have no idea when they are going to be at exact point. I think stand burn out is kore likely if you see a lot of deer on your sits. If you don't they won't be any the wiser...
  14. Figures the first one has to be a big one. Maybe you will find him in that gnarly stuff. See if you can borrow somebody's knight costume, just a thought...
  15. here is a forkie I saw yesterday and three more youngsters
  16. Saw a bunch of deer on yesterdays sit, none I wanted to shoot though. There were at least 4 different 4points and some young does. No big boy and no mature does either. I think I know what they were up to. Looks like breeding season has begun... Also new scrapes and rubs all over, and when I checked my cams I had one picture of a real slob,so nice to see what a big deer looks like. I was getting a little frustrated with seeing all the young bucks. Seems like there are a lot of them around, should make for fun next year.
  17. Just let a forkhorn walk. He was right under my tree for a bit.
  18. The guy on the first two pics wouldn't have gotten a pass from me. This is only my 2nd uear bowhunting and you don't see too many bigger deer around here in 4F. There are a few real bruisers around, but they didn't get big by being stupid.
  19. Sat in a tree tonight that sits in a nice funnel. Saw nothing until 5.40,then a doe and young one walked by rather quickly. Then sunset came and I let my bow down and decided to lower the stand a little, there was a big branch up high in my way. So I climb down a little and futz around with the hang on and after I get it semi secure I look up and there are three deer about 20yds away. I finished tying the stand on and decide to sit in it until the deer disappear. Can't believe they didn't make me,but it was definitely getting dark. One was a huge doe and she walked nice and slow past at 20 yds. Next time she won't be so lucky.
  20. gee moog, that buck makes you look small. Congrats on the bruiser
  21. No,they have one guy in the area but said with the rain and time elapsed it wasn't worth it. I looked again today but have no clue where he wandered of to. Checked two more water sources but nothing. At this point I thought maybe the crows would point me in the right direction, but no luck.
  22. Ok, I realize I made some assumptions, and we all know what that does. Amazing to me that the rain wouldn't wipe out all scent. Will give deer search a call and let them decide if they want to come out.
  23. Elmo,at this poInt that doesn't seem to make sense to me. The meat is wasted, which is terrible, and the deer went through his agony, doesn't make a difference to him if I find it now, right? The whole situation is depressing to me,I thought I had a better handle on this whole bowhunting thing. It is only my 2nd season bowhunting and 5 th gun hunting. I can only try to learn from this, although I considered myself a fast learner, but this is not my preferred way of learning for sure.
