  1. just two for me. My bear cruzer compound bow and a 50 cal wolf muzzleloader. I am a little cheap,so this list will probably not change for a while. After getting into bowhunting last year the muzzleloader seems like cheating...
  2. I will hunt both morning and evening opening weekend because I won't be able to help myself. Then, when or if I mellow out a little I think mornings will be better if you have a good way to the stand without spooking deer. I will try to ease of hunting some for the second half of October and then hit the stands really hard in early November, trying to catch a cruising buck. That is unless I already get one early on.
  3. well, last year was my first bowhunting,so I am changing a lot.Going to try to be out less in the middle and end of october and a lot in early november. Set up more stands and will use more stands at different times. I am thinking more about approaches to stands and scent control or camouflage. I also got a few cameras out for scouting and I think I am getting a better handle on deer movement on the properties I get to hunt. Food sources are different here this year, less apples and a lot more acorns. Have to see where the deer hang out this time...
  4. I also use the muzzy 3 blade fixed blade. Never had any problems with any of the deer I shot... One so far with the bow. Hopefully three this year... I do not mean one deer so far this year, but in my history of bow hunting.
  5. Always both lungs for me,biggest margin for error and I don't mind tracking a deer some distance, that is part of the fun. As long as there is a dead deer.. .
  6. I am not sure how I am going to make it another month..... Where is my mentor when I need him????
  7. You are not wrong, growalot. There is a swamp further to the right, all in all a pretty good spot.
  8. ok,here are some views from some of my stands. Almost done setting all of them up. Both stands are at the edge of a hayfield, the one is 15 yds in the other only about 5 yds. I have high hopes for both of them, good for bow and gun.
  9. thanks moog, the practice is paying off. Going on vacation for two weeks,no chance to practice there. I will be back September 17, then I will set up a tree stand in the front yard and shoot from that for the last two weeks. That should leave me in good shape. Also thinking of marking some trees by my stands for 25 yds, then I'll have a distance to judge by.
  10. So, I am wondering how everybody deals with getting the distance to the deer right. Are you marking spots with tape for your stands or does everybody use rangefinders? Do some of you just guess? What is the best way in your humble opinions?
  11. here are my shots for today. Deer at 39,and then I guessed wrong on the other target,25 and I thought 30. At least the arrow is good left to right. Deer season can't get here soon enough.
  12. Couldn't agree more with the last post, right on
  13. Good shooting Larry Here are mine from today, deer at 31 ,target at 26. Very happy with how I am shooting from the ground, but will set up a stand in my front yard and shoot out of that for a few weeks. See if I can keep it up.
  14. All very good advice. Try to be out there as much as you can while still enjoying it. I also have a hard time waiting for November to spend more time in the woods. Heck,I have a hard time waiting for October. Observing deer is the best way to figure them out a little more. I went for a walk/scout yesterday and snuck up on a doe and little one to within 20yds and pretended to draw my bow. She would have been a goner if it was for real. Amazing how unconcerned deer are this time of year before there is a ton of human scent in the woods. Too bad it doesn't stay that way...
  15. Definitely a nice shot for number one at 30 yds. I just ruined an arrow yesterday at 30 yds hitting it with the second shot. Getting better groups means shooting only one or two arrows at the same target. It is good that my groups are getting tighter though. Looks like I will be ready for opening day...
  16. Boy, I would want to be a deer in your neck of the woods,Buckmaster. Then again,it would mean a swift death which is a good thing. I feel like I am getting dialed in pretty good now. Deer at 32,target at 21
  17. 40 yds. Little low,but a nice group at that distance.
  18. I did not do great today. The target is about 23 yds and the deer 31. I always move stuff around so I have to guess at the distance every time. I just got the deer terget yesterday and am apparently not used to gauging that correctly. The group is not too bad. Better shots tomorrow.
  19. I went to a 3d shoot this morning at 7 ..a.m. and sweat like a littly piggy. The whole affair was very unpleasant, bugs and humidity. Not what I was looking forward to. Definitely not going to another shoot tomorrow. Too hot...
  20. I am finally getting good groups, been shooting almost every day for a week now. 1st target at 25, the one with the deer outline at 35. These were the first four shots of the day. I am going to a 3d shoot on Saturday, and maybe another on Sunday. I am getting very excited for the season. Got my doe tag as well, so look out deer!
  21. I have a viper and like it. The only drawback is you can not shoot from a sitting position with a bow because of the rail. The lone wolf would be much better for that. The viper also gets kinda heavy on long walks in. Overall pretty good climber though.
  22. I applied for 4F and got one. I don't apply for anywhere else since I don't hunt anywhere else.. Had no preference points, but I think chances were like 28%.
  23. Jesus Christ moog, your arrows at 50 look like mine at 30. Not too bad I would say. I did archery as a kid for a few years until I was 12 Years old with a 28 # recurve bow. The compound seemed easy at first, but it is not easy to get pinpoint accuracy. I keep changing my distance all the time though,so I have to guess almost every shot. You are doing very well with both the traditional and the compound. You would be welcome on my team any day.
  24. here is my entry for today. Hurricane target at 31, the other at 22. Pretty happy with it except for the arrow that would have hit the shoulder bone. More practice is recommended....
  25. I have been trying to get the rest of my stands up. Have 3 set up and have 3 more to go. I also have a few spots picked out for my climber. I got my first round of pictures from my two cams and have shots of a couple of bucks when they just started to grow the antlers. Pretty cute. Will leave the cams in the same spot for another few weeks, then I will move them to a friend's property to see if the nice 10 point from last year is still around.
