  1. was gonna say the exact same thing moog...
  2. i only did a few all day sits last year, but plan on doing some this year to scout areas a little better. I lost hunting opportunity on 115 acres down the road from me,so i will concentrate on my 32 acres and my friends 300. Both have areas that need more exploring,so i will get my climber out and set up in areas with a long field of vision to see what the deer are up to. Saw a lot of young bucks last year,so i am very interested to see if they stuck around and what they look like now. Definetly going to do one or two all day sits early November. If conditions change I will move, and sometimes I will move mid-day for a change of scenery.

    Why a bow?

i used to do archery in a club when from age 10 to 13. Then i stopped, since i needed a more active hobby, all that youthful energy. I didn't start hunting until i was 39,with a gun. After two years of that I figured it was time to give archery a try. That was a good idea, now i dont want to hunt with anything but a bow. Gun season is a bit of a let down...
  5. if yiu are in central ny,check out cny archery, they have dates and locations posted there
  6. so this little buck showed up at work the other day. I am building a stone wall and all of a sudden i noticed movement. He was maybe 20 yds away munching on oak leaves. I went to my phone,he didn't care. Then i started taking pics, and he he was unfazed. I got so close i could have touched him. He looked skinny, but otherwise alright. What a weird encounter, had to chase him away finally. Even quick movements didn't bother him,had to toss little rocks at him.
  7. ooh,now I want to go to a shoot!
  8. Hi grampy A friend of mine had shoulder surgery last winter,he is 72 years old. He is still working on getting strength back and hoping to shoot what was his wife's bow,40# draw weight. Keep up with the physical therapy and you will be back to shooting as well. Best of luck!
  9. Just got my bow back last week after having a new peep installed. The old one split the string three ways and one string kept ending up in my way. The new one just splits it two ways, much better. The shop I took the bow to is great,i am a new customer there. They have a video screen to shoot at,oh my was that fun. Seeing those big bucks made me nervous... Happy to be shooting my bow again, deer season is only 4 months away!!!
  10. ok,first deer,a doe in the woods early archery. 2nd deer, a buck in the woods not too far from a field, about 50 yds,but he was walking away from field in the afternoon. 3rd deer,a doe,gun season in the middle of some big woods around here. 4th one, a buck under some oak trees and he was stuffing himself, that's what gave me a chance to get him. All woods for me I guess, but there are two hayfields that the deer travel to in the early season.
  11. I got this guy on the 20th of december,he was in the wrong place at the right time. Full story in live from the woods thread
  12. I got one on the last day! This guy would have gotten a pass any other day,but he pretty much threw himself on the sword. I spotted a few deer across this little gully and decided to sneak the long way round to pop up behind them. Took me well over an hour to get there, but they were still there. I am sneaking down towards them and see a small doe and another deer pawing for acorns behind some trees. The doe walks off without giving me a good shot,to many little branches. The other deer is still there,so I sneak closer. Finally get a look at it and it is a 4 point. I figured with it being the last day,why not? I am only 50 yds away now,but have branches in the way. Finally I find a tiny opening and pull the trigger. Slight pop, then nothing. That sucks,I just put a new load in today. Also left my backpack and binoculars 50 yds away. Wanted to be unencumbered for the final stalk. So now I sneak back to backpack, the buck heard nothing. I put a new primer in and take some quickloads with me this time, sneak back. Again,50 yds and a small opening in the branches. I shoot and again just pop, then a second or two later the charge goes off. I moved of course and hit nothing, shucks. So I am standing there, watched the buck run off some but he didn't come out on the other side of trees he disappeared behind. I reload and keep looking and see the shape of a deer. Same buck is starting to come back,he wants his acorns. I picked a spot with no branches and he walks to it and pow, third time was the charm. He only went 25 yds before piling up. I call that suicide, maybe he was sick of the cold. Great finish to my best season so far (5th).
  13. I am headed out for the last day, looking for one more deer. Mostly looking for fun in the woods though. Have seen a lot of deer this year, hope they are where I will be today as well. This was my best season ever with the amount of deer seen and how early I started filling the freezer. No big buck for me,but that is ok.
  14. My wife wants me to be done, but I might have to give it one last go on Tuesday. Not that I am desperate for another deer, but after that we won't be able to go out for a solid nine months. That is forever long all spelled out like that.
  15. I saw one deer today,a small buck running towards me at last legal light. No good shot opportunity, even though he ran past my stand no further than 15yds away. I just don't feel comfortable shooting them from the hip. He will be there next season.
  16. Well,I didn't get my last deer yesterday.so guess I have to go out this afternoon for a bit. Going to a friends place with a 60 acre corn field that has just been chopped last week. Think the deer are hungry for corn? Only one way to find out..
  17. Seems like you guys are a special breed,Buckmaster. Kudos to your dad for not spending a day in the hospital with leukemia. It appears he took charge of that, while most people follow all the doctors orders and wither away in the hospital. What a strong person and dieing doing what he loved with his sons by his side. Too bad he had to go so soon,my condolences.
  18. I agree with the statement about the deer numbers in 4F. They are everywhere. We would be doing just fine with 1/3 of the population gone, but that will never happen because those buggers are pretty clever. They avoid places they get spooked out of during daylight hours for sure,at least for a while. I like the idea of pushing somebody's land even if you can't shoot there, pretty good compromise if the deer didn't somehow know that your gun wasn't loaded. They are smart... If you have access to a decent amount of land you will find deer almost every time you are out. I am doing what I can to manage the herd here, going out today to get my fourth for the season...
  19. I was out yesterday for a stillhunt and had another great time in the woods. I saw nothing for the first our and then came to some hemlocks on a north facing slope, deer like to bed there and with the wind from SW I thought they would be there. I saw one deer standing and feeding and tried to sneak closer when a whole bunch of them popped up and wandered of. Maybe 7 altogether. Then I tried to do a half circle and head them off,but some moved to fast, but I did catch up with two of them. Had a stand off with a button buck but let him go. Then I continued on and saw 6 more deer and tried to stalk the last group of three and had shots at the two smaller ones, but I wanted the bigger one and she saw me when I was trying to get an open lane. Oh well, plenty of action. Going out today and I have a strong feeling this will be the day I get my last deer for the season.
  20. I love my wolf. Hunt with it during regular season as well. Very accurate, doesn't kick much and light enough to carry all day. I switched to white hot pellets and find they are much cleaner than the black powder ones, also have a little more oomph. I use two and a 250 grain bullet. My wolf hates the powerbelt bullets, throws them all over the place. It likes cheap ammo, what can I say.
  21. Too funny. I have the opposite problem, doe tag is gone but still have the buck tag. If it was reversed you would be seeing the does and I would see the bucks. Maybe we should swap hunting spots?
  22. You must have blinked Jeremy.
  23. Got some fresh sniw here in 4F as well, should be fun.
  24. All I hunt with is a muzzleloadet,oh,and a bow. I have a question, don't want to de-rail this thread, but I found some day old red stains in the snow, almost looked like I was trailing an injured deer. Some real heavy spots and then just drops here and there. Could that be a doe in heat? I eventually lost the trail amongst other tracks.
  25. Two shots? People are nuts,I can't see 30 yds here. Good luck today Buckmaster, and I hope those shots were not on your property.
