  1. So far here in 4 L, prior to legal light, 3 different rifle shots. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Do does bed in the saplings? He might be traveling some distance from his own, secure bed and scent checking the saplings for does. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I'm in. Heading out after a quick oatmeal and egg breakfast. May we all drop what we're looking for... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. In addition to the article, which I hope to call to mind when needed, I enjoyed the dog tracking video from Maine embedded at the bottom. I've not seen a dog in action myself, and I enjoyed watching one work. I'm amazed by and truly respectful of the human/dog team. Great stuff right there...
  5. I just broke mine last deer. It was a cheap Browning bowie knife, but did the job on four deer. I just purchased this Benchmade Saddle Mountain Skinner, at the sweet price of $76.60. Should be a knife I pass along... http://www.benchmade.com/saddle-mountain-skinner-family.html
  6. I have a couple/few spots I'll sit during late bow if I don't fill my regular season tag. I have two doe tags for 4J, and will be sitting in the Pine Bush this next week and a half or so when I have the chance. Generally, I really enjoy the bow much more than I do the rifle, and seem to get a little more excited about the bow hunts than I do the rifle hunts.
  7. If only I had a doe tag for 4L... While on the ground, I had a doe walk a half-circle around me at under 10 yards. She looked sooooo tasty, and a couple/few years old. I've never had a deer be curious enough to walk around me like she did. She wanted to know what in the hell I was, and bolted after about 15 minutes of checking me out. She and two others bounded off, but without urgency, tails flagging. I waited a few minutes, and it was past legal, so I unchambered the round, and right at that "click" of the cartridge popping out, I heard a blow out, and turned and saw the three of them bounding away again, this time with haste. They doubled back on me, and were 50 yards behind me when I slid the bolt back. Great experience, but I'll have to let that spot go for a while, maybe until late season.
  8. Out until dark here on the mountain in 4L. Sitting on the ground, and looking for antlers. Saw about 20 turkeys scatter on my way in. They saw me first. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  9. Other than the two fawns I saw crossing the road on to private property, I saw zilch in the Pine Bush. Feels pretty good to be back up in the climber with a bow. Climbing down now... Super-pumped for TF. Fella's been stacking hours. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  10. 4J - Pine Bush. Looking for doe or better. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  11. Had to drive off the mountain and down into Albany. Lots of midday does on hoof in field corners again around the 1:00 pm hour. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  12. I think I see your point. My intention was to relate that this incident presents bad optics for all hunters, and to inform, generally. The information is one thing, individual responses to it are quite another. My response is: this certainly doesn't help the cause, and I'll conduct myself accordingly.
  13. Something may have trotted off after I grunted a few times. Other than that, just me and the regular beauty for the afternoon sit. I felt at ease back out in the woods again. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  14. Sounds like some fellas a couple ridges over have been driving with the rifles for the past couple of hours. About an hour ago, my neighbor was shooting at crows. Aside from a barred owl 30 mins ago, and my other neighbor occasionally banging around on something, it's still and silent. 30 min warning for me... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  15. First time in stand with the rifle this year. Looking for some buck luck up on the mountain in 4L. I'd be hunting field corners if I could... Laid some scent drag, so maybe I'll lure in a cruiser. Fairly fresh sign along the way, but cameras show only nighttime activity. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  16. Farmer's Daughter by Chatham Brewery. I'm mean, who wouldn't want one? It's a rye ale. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  17. A little intel for the sharing: I had to drive from Rensselaer County to Columbia County. I started at 12:45 and drove until 1:40. Saw many, many deer up and on hoof in field corners. Groups of doe, and single deer. Drove again at 3:30, and deer were up and in field again. They're moving here in region 4, this side of the Hudson. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  18. Haven't been out since the last day of bow, but I think I'll head out for a sit in the back property tomorrow morning. Hoping the deer have grown comfortable, and that there will be a doe or two coming into estrous soon. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  19. As I'm still fresh in this area, I can really only relay what I've read, but my limited experience lines up: - Food stuffs are good for cover scents, and help you blend into the area. - Deer scents are the lures. Interdigital gland, tarsal gland, estrous, etc. that's what draws them in.
  20. As it reads, this fella ain't helping the cause, nor the PR image: http://wtov9.com/news/local/aep-fires-alleged-dog-shooter-in-belmont-county
  21. I used it only as a cover scent last year, but something about the odor was off, and I stopped using it. Thought was: "do acorns really smell like that?" I use earth as cover scent now and have read that a squirt or two of apple scent on the hat work... I did have success drawing in a public land buck on a drag line of "Bob Kirschner's Curiosity Lure" late season. I wasn't able to capitalize. I was on the ground, and he spotted my hand move to the bow. He was on that lure, for certain, though.
  22. You might want to start a "What's for Lunch While Afield" thread... Ha. That looks good, and I hear you on the deer disappearance. Haven't been out on my property since bow season, and there are no daytime deer around.
