  1. If we are just talking deer my usual is 8h, 8n, and 8m. I didn't make 8m this year but hunted 9h for a couple of days. In addition I hunted 8w for quite a bit up until about 5 years ago. If you are talking other species in addition to the above I have hunted 9 m, p, n, & w, parts of 5h and most of region 6 with the exception of a couple areas.
  2. Online registration for DEC’s Summer Camps program will open Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 1 p.m. Submit applications through the online registration program with a link on the Summer Camps web page. We encourage those who are interested to register early since some weeks fill quickly. DEC Summer Camps offer week-long adventures in conservation education for ages 11-17. This year, 14-17 year-old campers will have more sessions available in the summer. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in new, outdoor activities including fishing, archery, canoeing, hiking and more.
  3. Regardless of what kind of bow you would like or think you like make sure you shoot it first. Look at a bunch and shoot a bunch before you make your decision. There is nothing worse than buying a bow out of a catalog or on line only to end up with something you don't like or doesn't fit. Just like a woman...you will know when you have the right one.
  4. Congratulations......And the addiction begins. Odd color on that fox and he looks a little ragged but healthy. It looks somewhat like a spring colored phase. I would have thought it would have a lot more color since this time of year is when they are usually in their prime. Maybe it was just the camera. Either way it was a good outing
  5. Fantastic write up and it sounds like she got everything the course had to offer and them some. First time I have heard from someone that attended “Becoming an Outdoors Women” (BOW) and am glad that program seems to be working also.
  6. Number 1 change for next year? One thing that I learned this year is that "next year" is not always certain. I have some things I want and would like to do different and can only hope the opportunities to do so will present themsleves. It is always something to look forward to and plan for but cannot be taken for granted.
  7. If you want to get more confused the "Lucky Duck Revolution" comes with a built in HD Video Camera https://www.luckyduck.com/the-revolution-e-caller/ The Lucky Duck Callers also have a good reputation.
  8. Already answered: 20 hours ago, turkeyfeathers said: Thank goodness Storm hasn't posted his flashlight set up yet I was worried until I saw you did Yeah duck tape don't work...to hard to clean off the sticky residue. I have tried a lot of set ups with a shotgun and this works the best for me and will stand the recoil of a 12 gauge. I have tried a couple of different ways only to have the light fall apart or fall off the gun. About the only time it gets used is for calling grey fox at night or close quarters which isn't to often. Easy on and easy off if I want to use it for something else. I can use it in the day time without removing the light. I am sure there are better set ups but can't see investing big time for something only used once or twice a year.
  9. Just one opinion but I think the best bang for your buck would be the Fox Pro Fusion. It has a lot of options that most including me will ever use but it's reputation has been good. I just purchased one this year for one reason only. The fusion has the bigger remote which is supposed to be easier to use and has a bigger display. I have a primos alpha dog I would let go for $175 and a FoxPro wildfire II for $100 if you would be interested. Both are in good condition and work like they should. The remote screen on the alpha dog has a couple of minor scratches but they don't hinder viewing the screen. Electronic callers have so many options and the options are usually what effects the price. Regardless of what you buy I would recommend doing your homework as there so many configurations to consider. https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/foxpro-wildfire-ii-electronic-game-call https://www.primos.com/primos-hunting/e-callers/alpha-dogg/c-24/c-86/p-124 https://www.amazon.com/FoxPro-Fusion-Electronic-Predator-Digital/dp/B076SQFRK3

  11. Everyone is different but I usually set the caller 50-75 yards upwind of my sitting or standing location. I don't go any farther because I want them coming in as close as possible. The farther it is away the longer shot you will most likely have. I don't use a wiggly so can't help you there but since they are almost always attached to the caller the distance is the same.
  12. turkeyfeathers is spot on. Snowshoes are a lot of work and anything less than a foot you may as well go to the gym.
  13. Just to clarify you won't be able to zip tie the wicked because the bezel is considerably larger than the light pictured. You will need a barrel mount which I believe will come with the wicked. You do not need a 500-600 yard light on a shotgun.
  14. Quick, easy, effective, and cheap mount for a shotgun: https://www.amazon.com/UniqueFire-HS-802-Flashlight-Hunting-Fishing/dp/B01BV2E6WS

  16. I personally can't stand the head mounted lights. The constant moving your head back and forth just doesn't work for me. I bought one of these in red before the three color came out.https://www.wickedhuntinglights.com/w403ic-predator-pursuit-pack You can mount one to the gun and use the other to shine. Whatever you buy I would invest in one(or two ) of these gun clamps instead of the mount that comes with the Wicked. These are very versatile and make it very simple to put a light on any gun in a matter of seconds. Thermal is nice and I use one for scanning but they tend to be a little bit heavy mounted on a gun. I try to go as light as possible and have no desire to be carrying more weight the necessary. There are lot "cheaper" options to the wicked if you are only going to be an occasional hunter.
  17. I don't own a muzzleloader so I pick the times I can bow hunt based on the weather. I hunted Friday the 13th, skipped Saturday because of the rain, and Sunday because of the wind. I hunted Monday afternoon and got out today with a fresh 6" of snow on the ground. I didn't see a single track on the way in, sat til dark in an area that has been known to be a travel route over the years. Didn't see a thing but did cut a couple of small fresh tracks on the way out. This is been probably my worst year ever for a number of reasons and I can honestly say I am glad it is over. The season totals for bow were 32 sits/ 42 hours and gun was 28 sits/ 68 hours. Climber and pack when I got back
  18. I came across this article a few months ago and saved it. I haven't used it but thought it was kind of neat as a possible way to display skullcaps. I'm sure it could be modified to fit an individuals taste but it might give you something to think about.
  19. I am sure you realize that carpal tunnel is nerve related. I had a severe case about 15 years ago in both hands. I met with a surgeon and he ordered a "nerve test" that was pretty painful. Since it was determined that my right had was worse than my left he recommended doing surgery on that one first. The incision was very small, the surgery was short, and not painful at all. It was the best thing I ever did. The recovery was very short and within a short period of time I could use my right had as good as ever. The best part of the whole thing was after surgery on my right hand the pain in my left hand also went away and I never had to have surgery on my left hand. To this day I can still shoot a bow, gun, and am able to use any hand tool without any discomfort. I would recommend it to anyone and believe the key to success is finding the right surgeon that has experience in that type of procedure.
  20. Don't know anything about it but Bass Pro has a "Cabela's Heavy Duty Vacuum Sealer" on sale for $70.00 til the 15th https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/cabelas-heavy-duty-vacuum-sealer?searchTerm=2516251
  21. Was planning on this morning with the bow but woke up to a 19 degree windchill and said screw it. Maybe this afternoon because tomorrow and Sunday aren't looking good with rain & wind in the forecast.
  22. Maybe that is what happened. Will the real hoaxer please step up so I don't have to look over my shoulder each time I am in that woods. Who knows; mine could be on that tree next
  23. I can't sit in a tree with those kind of winds especially with a climber. I too have seen quite a few deer during windy days from the ground. I have never shot one from the ground with a bow. Maybe I should give that a try since I have tried just about everything else.
  24. Kind of windy this morning so decided to do a little snoop around in a woods that I haven't hunted in a week or so. I spoke with one of the guys hunting it on Monday and he said only one small button buck had been taken and not a lot of deer had been seen. Not a lot of travel sign but in addition to the previous rubs I found some new ones have showed up an there are some really large tracks around. If the winds ever settle down I may take the climber and give it a try with the bow later in the week.
  25. Actually they looked like one could have been a coon(raccoon) and another a fox skull, they were not all deer but definitely a strange thing to find in the middle of nowhere. Makes you wonder what kind of people are roaming them thar hills. The fact they could find the same tree over and over and would keep going back makes me wonder about the person and what their motive might be.
