  1. You can if you shoot 10-12 rounds a year through em but watch the rust n don't drop em. Cast things break. You guys hunt whatever you want but I'm not touching them n would never recommend them. What would you consider a decent scope? A Leupold will be worth more than the gun, a Bushnell or Simmons is worth next to nothing. Nikon is decent but terrible customer service. Thankfully seldom needed. Burris is the brand imo.
  2. Not at all I just think they're not very well made n they aren't. Id never recommend one. An old 700 is surely a way better gun n pretty common so easy to find. An old Winchester pricier but would need trigger work. That adds to price. Best value is a Tikka. Best used gun price wise an old 700.
  3. God guys, Savage? Ruger? Ugh I just puked. Freakin garbage. Look at em. Savage are rust buckets n Ruger is cast parts , bad triggers on lots of guns. Man I gotta blunderbuss the op could borrow. Shoots rocks but it's about like a ruger accuracy wise. Op do yourself a favor n get a decent piece. Cheaper in the long run
  4. Sako .300 win mag or my rem 700 in .243. Quite the contradiction but they're shooters n the ones I usually take anymore
  5. If you're looking to spend that little you better look used. If not, You're gonna need scope, rings n bases n that alone is gonna be $300 n up. Have you ever shot? I don't know exact energy off the top of my head but a .270 n 30/06 to me seem very similar recoil wise. The guns you mentioned will surely do the job. Borrow a gun this year n save some money. Best rifle for the money is a T3. Top it off w a Burris scope, (another best for the money n actually better than most period), n you'll be set. Don't Rush n go cheap, you'll wind up buying everything twice.
  6. I think the October lull is mostly pattern changes n more importantly stand burn out n pressure.
  7. They're def cool animals n make great mounts. Plus trapping one is awesome. I prob wouldn't shoot one
  8. Stick a knife in the armpit. You said deer was immobilized. In the jaw as stated you must be off to side. Too many cut windpipe n it lays there gasping. If it's moving shoot it
  9. You know why the TV guys shots are always off? They're shooting Mathews! Just kidding kinda guys
  10. In my area coyotes are bad. Theyll tear a deer up but the bears are way worse. Almost everone I know has lost one to a bear or had bears follow them out to.
  11. Hmmm weak arguement as always. It's not the minority it's the majority. What happens when someone can't use a crossbow n needs to use a rifle during your season? Seasons were set to accommodate equiptment not actually you. Sorry brother. Archery seasons were set up for bows, not guns that shoot arrows. Anyone can in minutes shoot them accurately, hence you're "if guys don't have time to master a bow" is true. This is all ok, hunt the way you have time. If you can't expend the energy to practice it's not other people's problems. Try to institute the weapon in muzzleloader where it should be. Most guys don't like that option cause it may be slightly harder in that season. There is the essence of a non bowhunter. Bowhunters go for the challenge, some guys go for what's easy n then complain when they don't get their way that others are elitist. Some day I'm sure the dec will allow it, what's so bad w your 2 week start? Suck it up

We can't take fisher or bobcats. Bobcats are all over n a little rough to get outa snares.

Funny used to take my daughter at 3-4 years old to check beaver traps. Pull her on a jet sled. She loved it even though it was cold. Our season started than jan 1 for flat tails.

Well I do too. Best thing unfortunately for them is a little rough time before a harvest. The work n determination keeps em going. This is why (sorry guys) I'm so against modern technology, least to extremes like when we take all the hunting out of the hunt. When it's too easy the challenge is gone. One year youth turkey I called a few turks in for my buds son. He moved n spooked em. Went to another spot n two came in, he missed. Third spot n 3 more came in, those 3 n previous 2 long beards. Missed first two shots n rolled one running away on third shot. He never turkey hunted again. Too easy. Hmmm. The kid bird hunts w us. All the dogs are well trained. We usually get our limits. All he had to do is show up w shells. Too easy. He's now totally out. Some kids though eat it up. Guess it can ruin some n fire others up. All we can do is try n pass it down n cater to the kid. Imo the best thing we can do is teach em how. Taking an animal on their own at legal age should help stoke fires

I agree 100% w whole post! Times have changed the deer woods in so many ways. Let em be kids n lets hoot n holler over anything they shoot. Best memories of our lives.
  17. Op you're getting good advice but id not change anything now. Wait a month when it's all over

You cannot believe me if you want. I'm not a selfish guy n it's only a deer. Nothing tough about saying that. Little kids are the future, mine, the neighbors n yours if you have some. Id be the first to help your child drag it n be proud for them. You oughta feel the same for everyone else
  19. That's what I was told. Wrong quiver. Jackhammers don't say that. Point proven

Well you dont know me. It'd be upset if they missed. Let me explain something. A thief expects to be robbed, a cheater to be cheated on n a guy who cares if a little kid shoots "his" deer expects us all to feel the same. That deer doesn't matter, the little kid freaking out with his/her dad does. You don't get it well I can't explain better

OP I sense your concern for people teaching kids did you after hours but having a child kill a deer instead of you concerning you seem silly
  22. Phade I'm not sure I'm understanding you? I'm only giving the op some options so his detective work makes sense. Just don't understand your post.
  23. How many deer have you shot to see this? Come on now. Rice crispies? Gotta say that's a new one
  24. Good post but shoulder blade pop n a shoulder crack are much dif sounding.
  25. Certainly not gonna disagree w ya if it happened but it's surely not common. Quartering to shots are ill advised. No dis just too much chance of hitting the shoulder n winding up w wounded deer
