  1. Late season hunt brooks. They're very often the only thing open n the birds pour in. Mid season expect the migrations to start n can be hit or miss depending on so many variables. Now if you use dekes set your pocket so the birds fly in against the wind. If they gotta fly w the wind they prob won't land or will pass set n you'll watch em out of range. Open your chokes up cause steel is harder than lead n makes the pattern one size smaller most times. One year I shot 147, (I was doing harvest surveys for the state or I would never know) n the tightest choke was ic. I even use this choke on reservoirs for divers. Oh n use extra dekes to sorta "clog" spots you don't want them to land. Follow the birds as they follow food n open water
  2. Summit owns the climber market. They're super comfortable but for Bowhunting the rail gets in the way. I use a summit cobra, got an open front. They also make some w front rails that fold down somewhat. Most often though I use a lone wolf sit n climb. A little less comfortable but carrying it is much easier n it climbs better than the razor., the viper I use only w guns. You gotta learn to shoot twisted otherwise cause of the front rail. No comparison as far as noise, the lone wolf is much quieter both in climbing/set up and if you happen to drop top platform. Any of those two makers have fans as you can see but the lone wolf imo is better for bowhunting
  3. Ah man good luck! Wish I had a kid. My daughters are 13 n 16, just outside the age. The little girl I mentor has gone out w a friend of mine pheasant hunting n he invited her along youth day. I assumed she knew Id take her but all that matters is she's going. My buds neighbor kid moved away n he enjoys it like we all do. Wish all the youths and mentors the best of luck! Best times of the season.
  4. It seems every year someone sees this. I relate a lot to dogs. Some male dogs are just always rambunctious. Bucks can apparently breed all year long, guess it is possible a doe could be starting to smell good but Id think it's still too early. Nature has a way of keeping things in check. Even if somehow they possibly bred now the fawns chances of survival would way decrease because of the colder weather when it was born, lack of places to hide n being not at all dropped during predator saturation time which is one of the reasons most animals have young together timewise. The fawn if dead certainly can't pass on this bad gene of coming in too early. Besides it all comes down to the amount of daylight, increasing or decreasing triggers most things w deer. Does can come into heat twice a year if the daylight was controlled n a compete cycle done every 6 months. Than you gotta consider if she did smell good now why is only one buck chasing her when she's the only game in town? Guess it is possible n I'm not discounting your sighting
  5. Moog nailed it but why not climb? If you're in a blind draw normally n keep everything inside. You should know in most blinds if put up the same day deer either see it n look at it, become suspicious n walk away or see it walk closer stomping their hoof, once there the only way to leave is exposing vitals so best to know body language n get ready for what's coming. I call it reading the play. If it's set for a bit n you make no noise they'll ignore it mostly. Ugh read you wrong drawing in a natural blind is the same but as stated by others deer can see motion extremely well at eye level. Draw once they step behind a tree or have eyes exposed. You should also know you're doing things kinda the hard way for a beginner. If I was you Id ask about better options
  6. The antis are wrong again. We already have predators in the woods. The fact theyd rather see coyotes tear a fawn than a little kid grin after a first deer, n a great shot shows they're off. The kid n coyotes eyes are in the same place. They're both predators. I say shoot every legal coyote. It'll be less in the woods. Hunt em after deer season, lots of fun
  7. The NJ fish n game did DNA tests on the eastern coyotes since they're so big compared to western ones n they behave differently from packing, rallying deer, etc. They found wolf dna in the specimens tested which explains some but normally Wolves kill coyotes so the breeding musta been not extremely common but it did obviously happen. They published their findings in the hunt digest a few years back. Most guys I know snare 50 pounders but the largest I've personally taken have never been weighed but maxed out at maybe 40 lbs. One even got choked out crawling through a fox set, snare was not even over second ear. Not sure how it managed this but was a decent dog. Biggest I've heard of was 70 but I never saw it only heard from reputable trapper. Still not sure about the honesty in that but guess it possible. Size wise an adult deer/coyote is much more close than a wolf/moose or elk. The guides up north tell me the wolves hamstring the moose n elk n wait for the animal to stiffen up (the leg) than take it down. Yellowstone animal population has plummeted in my understanding so the packs there are doing a bit of damage, guess coyotes can damage our deer herds. They def go after the fawns n that is enough
  8. Right on the money. Brains put you in the right place right time n prevent you from buying rage broadheads or Mathews bows!
  9. Posting this for a buddy of mine. Got 3 male pups from a litter he's getting rid of. The male is mainly Gay bred background. That bloodline was Frank Reese. The female is out of Rich Zettlemoyers Chop a Line kennels. The bitch's sister has been trialed heavily n I've personally put wins on her every time but two. One she measured out, one the owner scratched her as the pack was trashing (running fox) Hannah didn't pack. The cross has been done before n the pups have good mouth, search n rabbit sense. Both parents I can attest are hard hunters too. Great chance at some good gun dogs. He is asking $200 a pup. Id venture he'd show the parents, previous littler's dogs n the puppies. He is located in Sussex co NJ right near Orange co NY. I should add theyre med speed n the parents n previous litter all run nose down Pm me for more info
  10. This evening my 13 year old daughter n I went hunting. Skye was ready n excited. First deer down a doe at 10 yards. Saw the blind or movement perhaps n just backed up hill. A half hour or so later she taps my arm n days dad can I shoot this? A single bear maybe 200 is coming right for us. Gets to the same ten doe was n stops. Bad angle. Bear starts towards blind stopping at 4 yards (my rangefinder couldn't even read spot it stood after it left). The stare down starts n lasts prob not too long but to her with a bear at 4 paces it prob felt close. Turns to leave n I tell her to draw, the bear offers no angle n she can't get bow back. She's been shooting since age 2 so I'm thinkin it was nerves. Gets to 20 n comes back passing the blind at the same 10. The blind is brushed in good n in heavy cover. She shoot n hit a 1-2" sapling ugh. Bear stops at 25 but I don't let her shoot n my bow was sitting there w no arrow on string as I don't shoot w kids, mine or anyone's. Half hour before dark another doe at 17, she draws but shot angle goes away n we're done a bit later. Hearing her tell her mom the story was comical. Another fun night in the NY woods

  12. Hunted NJ this morning n the deer seemed to be moving well. Saw a small 8 n 6 but didn't shoot. In lower Orange co near where I live the forecast looks ok so my younger daughter (13) n I are headed out soon. Good luck to all
  13. id wait for good conditions, especially the wind. Storms can sometimes change a deers pattern n if you know it than don't gamble. Now hard rain could wash away some scent after you leave but deer often don't move in that. Mist or somewhat wet conditions actually intensify animals ability to smell you. Watch a bird dog or hound in it. They never lose the source. The first time is the best time. If the deer doesn't smell or see you he may not know he's being hunted but again w the weather n patten change probability how could you know where or when he's somewhere? To spook him makes em become harder to hunt
  14. All true though Id say just a pinch smaller. They taste great n drag easier. To the op bears always look bigger alive. When they die the blood pressure leaves n the hair goes flat so they seem to "shrink". Also bears are very hard to judge size wise from a pic especially when people aren't famaliar w how big the areas trees n such are. If your getting multiple pics on him put something in the area, mark a tree, etc to judge his height n such with. Thatll help some
  15. Just messin w ya. Glad you did something you wanted. Keep the generator though things still happen
  16. Not to divert the op's post but another custom recurve advantage is the shape of the riser. It's not just speed. From my understanding it's not real easy to get the shelf "proper". The shelf needs, imo, to be shallow which puts the arrow very near your knuckle. If it isn't the more you roll the bow the more it shoots to the side. Also being close to the knuckle aids instinctive shooting. It's possible to shoot instinctive w any stykbows or compounds for that matter but the arrow next to your knuckle def helps.
  17. One reason I still like feathers is I can customize em. You can insert sections of other colored feathers in a main feather after removing same piece n marry em back together. So you have say a chartruese feather w red stripe 2/3 in. Or red w white ends, whatever. Just something fun to do n feathers imo have always been more forgiving. New rests on compounds kind of alleviates some w drop aways (rests). But the timing on that rest must be correct or you still have contact issues

Saturday is opening day in NY for archery as we know. Good luck to ya all especially the newbies! Hope all the old hands have time this season to mentor a kid!
  19. Feathers always shoot good w missing chunks, vanes can be cut in a clean v around a tear n shoot pretty well too. If you don't the wobble down range. Just a fyi in case you weren't aware or hadnt tried it
