Wolves, caribou and moose - it's complicated
Rattler replied to Curmudgeon's topic in General Hunting
I believe it's a mistake to discuss wolves and coyotes as if they are the same type of predator, creating the same types of issues. They are completely different and have to be managed differently. -

Wooly, you seem to miss the fact deer have many sources of death. Are you suggesting there are too many deer and we should allow an overpopulation of predators take care of the problem for us? The subject being discussed is eliminating one cause of deer mortality. Would you rather we eliminate cars than coyotes? BTW, I see cars hit deer that were running from pursuing coyotes all the time. -

Curmudgen, the arrogance is not mine, it is in your attitude. I stated the question correctly. It is not incomplete. Your answer is reading something into the question that was not asked. Try answering the question I asked instead of attacking me for asking it. Why would anyone want to increase the population of a predator because "It's something we cannot manage"? This sounds like a desire to allow wildlife management to get out of control. All wildlife is "wild". that's why we call them "wildlife". However, keeping populations in balance is important. Allowing predator populations to increase beyond the point of threat would seem to be a bad idea. If you disagree, I'd like to know why. If you want to have more influence on the minds of the average hunter, you better start being more factual and less snobbish and insulting. Don't change the subject, or turn it around to suit your opinion. just answer the question. -

Sorry, but I don't get the point. Could you elaborate? -

Why didn't they just allow more Elk hunting in Yellowstone? Hunter's would have paid handsomely to hunt those Elk. Instead they spent millions on wolves and wolf management? Seems like the wrong solution to that problem. -
Thanks for the info philoshop. I don't have a clue how to do that. Gonna have the gas company come out and fix it and not paying them to do it. It worked great for years until they touched it. They broke it, so I expect them to fix it. They better hope they can light the pilot.

Anyone have any plans to hunt bear in the early season this year? Thinking about going out.

Wolves, caribou and moose - it's complicated

I often wonder about the first sentence. I believe it may have some truth to it. Maybe a lot of truth. The 2nd sentence is debatable. I would like someone to explain to me what useful purpose they do serve, since, like I said above, things seemed fine when they weren't around. -
I was looking forward to going out this morning. I look forward to hunting them, as it gives me a chance to hunt with my Kimber Hunter .22LR with the Leupold VX-III 2.5 - 8X power scope. (Never thought I'd own $1500 worth of squirrel shooting rifle. LOL! I got it for much less years ago though) Heck, I look forward to the first day being able to hunt something after the long summer. Anyway, it was cold when I got up, about 38 degrees outside and 50 degrees in the house, so I turned on the furnace for the first time this season and it didn't work. I had the propane tanks changed out about a month ago because they were rusted and I could smell some gas leaking from them. Seems the guy didn't light the pilot correctly when he was done and it went out. Problem now is, I can't get the pilot to light. So I spent the AM dealing with that instead of hunting. Now I have to be somewhere at 1 PM so today didn't work out as planned.

Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman. I wonder why they didn't have HUNTER in that little group. -

I don't hate wolves or coyote, but often wonder about any benefit of having them around, other than another animal available to hunt. Considering game animal populations seemed healthy and fine prior to the reintroduction of wolves, or the expansion of territory by yotes, why do we want them back in those areas? Seems to me they were taken out because they caused problems and when they were gone, the only thing missing from their old areas, was them. I often hear supporters claim they are good for keeping the other animal populations under control, but doesn't that eliminate a lot of the need for liberal hunting seasons and bag limits? How do we know if the future might be one where the predators control game animals and hunting is no longer necessary? Besides, the wolf and yote populations seem to get out of control and require major control themselves. If they are the solution to a problem, what exactly is the problem they solve? -
I have a half dozen of these Bear broad heads with screw in attachments on them. They have the blade inserts too, so they are 4 blade. Have not hunted with them recently. Years ago had a nice Bear 50# recurve bow that used custom cedar arrows. Some miscreants broke in the deer camp and stole it, as well as the cedar arrows that I used in it. Wish I still had that one.

Found it online. CZ 7.62x39 bore diameter is 0.300, groove diameter is 0.312. I suggest that you continue to shoot and enjoy your rifle with standard, proven components. If you will be reloading, just remember that the .311 bullets might not work as well with the fastest powder you use with the .310 bullets and all should be fine.
-
You can go directly to CZ to ask them what bore diameter the rifle has. Makes things much easier. You may even be able to Google the info.

Even the steel cased Wolf ammo and the like will not perform well on deer in many cases. Good factory hunting ammo should always be used.
-
I've hunted with a Mini 30 in the past. Found it a bit on the heavy side. But the 7.62x39 is an adequate deer round out to at least 100 yards. Good factory hunting ammo works well. Avoid the military surplus stuff, even if it is a soft point. It's really substandard IMHO.

What does a Mountain Muffler string go for? Are they all Flemish style?

What we call them is second to how we should be ready for them. Any rallies by the right should be expecting them now and should be prepared to defend themselves from these attackers. If someone comes at you now, pull out some bear repellent and shoot them in the face mask! That will stop them and also get them to remove the mask. I'm tired of this fight remaining one where the right has two hands tied behind their back. Of course when they do fight back, they will be the one's the media attacks as being violent. Ignore the media. the public knows the truth. -
My bow is labeled Colt Master Hunter and is a 60 inch bow. But it measures 55 inches from tip to tip when measured across the flat. I need to get string silencers for it. Anyone have any suggestions?
-
I think the enemy to accuracy is fatigue. I shoot only 10 arrows a session. Then I quit for at least an hour, preferably 2 hours or more. I figure only the first shot counts anyway. I concentrate on that first shot the most. I've only gotten a 2nd shot twice in all my years of bow hunting. The bow only carries 4 arrows and one is holding the Kwikee hood.
-
I am hoping to take it to 40 yards after practicing more. The bow has the power to do it, but If I can't hit a paper plate with every shot at that distance, I won't do it. Most deer I take with a bow are less than 25 yards away anyhow.
-
It's a rather rare recurve. It's labeled "Colt Firearms Industries" and was made in the late 60's or early 70's. It's a 50 lb pull. I draw 29 inches. I forget the length of this bow. I'd have to check. Kwikee Kwiver and hood comes off easily. Aluminum 2117 arrows. No sight. "No Glove" brand 3 finger rubber holds the nock on the string well and I use a simple rubber Bear brand arrow rest. It works in all weather and very little can go wrong with it under normal conditions. I currently have 3 recurves to hunt with but this one's set up for this year. I used to have 6 of them, but sold the ones I never used, or were ugly now. I forgot to mention I'm using Sattelite 125gr 3 blade broad heads that I've had for about a decade and never opened the package. They're just like new. (Hate putting them together though)

Well the deer were back but only 1 fawn now. Got a close shot as it went past the house. The doe followed it across the yard. One fawn missing. Coyotes? Car?
-
Old school equipment has a hold on me again. It is certainly much lighter to lug around and needs no release to shoot. I'm good to 30 yards without any problem.

I think we're going off on a tangent here. Primary education isn't where the indoctrination becomes intense. It sets the stage for it in high school. But it really kicks in with college. Most higher education in the USA today is preaching, not teaching.
