  1. in response to private messages of what the heck is that? it is a scorpion, the rain drives them in the house, they glow in the dark when under UV light. today was a rough one, made me look forward to the end of the season, gusty winds snow and ice, got up to 33F Degrees but didn't feel it. went from the fall foliage line around 7,500 feet to the it's winter line at 8,900 and found only one bear again, another 200 tops, lots of bison heading for the valleys...wish I had a tag for them this year, one muley buck and down in the river bottom a pronghorn buck in the 90s in the closed zone. figures. long hard day made easier with the hiking poles, wish I had used them years ago they really are a treat especially on the ice and rocks. pretty day and smelled like fall, but took a toll on my hands which are still cold.
  2. great idea! ...now I gotta lug a tree along with me....ugh..does it come with the tree included option?
  3. I don't have it here, it's in VT, the whole house is going for sale , I am going home to the north country to spend the holidays with family and mother then to bennington Vermont to finish cleaning out that house hopefully everything gets gone and the house is on the market asap
  4. hunting in the house today, heavy rain, 0.08" over night, drives the crawlers into the house. dark, gloomy day so we are hunting in the house with the uv lights.
  5. I agree on the Hondas, in 2008 I bought an EU2000i used it for the camper, ran electric chainsaw off it, kept a chest freezer running in the truck bed for meat, the only thing it would not do was start the A/C, 13,500 btu, I bought a second eu2000i and paralleled them and it was perfect. I sold the one Eu2000i and parallel kit with the trailer but kept one for general use, bowfishing lights, etc since they are so easy to carry. you can also hook up a tri-fuel carb to them which is neat, keep an eye out for a used one or two, I'll be selling this one when I am back east around the holidays but I'm not anywhere near you, it's in SW Vermont. I'd have kept it and used it here in WY but the whole house is electric out here, it's a 4500 watt hot water heater, so even the two eu2000is would not have done it, add in the electric heat, water pumps, washer dryer, microwaves, tvs,...nope. they ain''t gonna do much. But I had zero problems with them the whole time I had them, other than bad gas now and then.
  6. for years a hunting partner of mine would carry an empty gun case out of the house and tell his wife on the way out that he had to take a gun to the gunsmith to fix something....then bring the new gun home in the case. after years of this he was showing us a gun one day and his better half walked past and asked, " is that the new shotgun you got last week?" he was dumbfounded and blurted out ,how the hell did you know?! she said well, you probably didn't know this but, I can COUNT!
  7. would it be of any interest to hear about our days here? I don't want to tick anyone off. my wife generally runs the roads and lines with me when I head out, the last two hounds we have ride along, too beat up and busted up to hunt anymore, they usually add to the diversion. each day my wife writes in her book what we saw, big game and birds she likes, nothing we see around the house, we normally have a dozen rabbits around at one time, 50 or so chukars and small herds of muleys and she won't write that down because they are always there, but , well...I'll put down what she did today, you see if its of any interest? 44 degrees F, cloudy 3 mph wind WSW, heading into the forest0600 for bear hunt, lots of holiday traffic heading into the park 3 Bison have moved down to the house, hope this doesn't mean early winter, they are early. first at blackwater, last at pahaska, billy bob bobbob and bob 5 whitetails by the mailbox, maybe fires have moved them across the river, they don't come over here much ever. 3 pronghorn bucks out on the long range range, again, fires? bald eagle eating trout by big pull off coyote in summer coat lakeside at rock beach tons of trumper swans in elkcreek (she likes swans, why I don't know, never writes down the geese or ducks) herons, etc. elk by horse corrals, again early winter? and again by lake 60 or so bison on the park boundary, second esterus, lots of burbling. medium black bear on top of pass eating high bush, 200 tops, less than 1/4 mile from truck, too small RJ passed. golden eagle in moose draw spotted while hitting berries for bears, heading home. Neighbor asked if he could give us a camera to put in the front of our house so he can get grizz pics. RJ said, yep, but don't be a pest about it/ long day, not seeing much bears
  8. yepper, I don't know what "sanctioned" means, nra approved? but I'm glad forbes in colonie is still open, they used to have to shut down a road for us to shoot 1,000yds, and they did that rarely. the BPCR shoots were in wilton, not far off the northway exit 16 maybe? been decades,so don't hold me to the exit number the sunshine truck cap compny was nearby, that I remember he made me a cap just be fore we moved.... but dave hicks the son of the fur/sang buyer in Hartford is among the top 5 shooters in the world, or was, and either he or don Hamilton in indian lake could tell you right where they are currently shooting bpcr, those ranges are 600 to 1,000 yards. as you head north out of indian lake and pass the cedar river golf course don's gunshop and home is on the right as you climb the hill. I'm sure if you've driven from indian to blue mtn you've seen it. and no, there is NO hunting scenario anywhere in the world where there is a Hunting1,000 yard shot... tha't is not hunting, it's shooting not hunting.
  9. EXACTLY why I moved to NW Wyoming, well, one of the reasons...can't stand snow!! plowed it for more than enough years in the north country, don't care if I ever own another 4wheel drive truck again.
  10. Lord there are so many things that can be said right there...
  11. nothing special or hard to find but moose drool and polygamy porter is all I've got, you're welcome to it.
  12. that's nice of you to recognize Jay, I love this site too! and I love you too, man!
  13. well I enjoyed shooting blackpowder at 1,000 yards in NY but could never stand up with the likes of davy hicks or don Hamilton, but in wonderful Wyoming Philoshop 1,000 yards is handgun range! and they shoot for 5 shot group...come on out! every June you'll be in heaven! start in sundance and then on to cody for real long range, but that is rifle out to 2,700 yards. super wonderful people and come a few days early and the companies and folks will set you up with loaner equipment or set their scopes up on your gun for you ...good fine people here and if you're like me the second you see 10 year olds hitting 5inch targets at 1200 yards you'll want the borrowed rig!
  14. I opened a chat with Walmart Help center and asked why only NY is clearance pricing RUGERs and why we aren't getting the pricing of $199 here the response; Carmen R.: Let me inform you that I already asked this information of my supervisor and he told me that we have heard nothing about stopping carring the RUGER firearms. Carme only New York state stores are selling off the RUGER firearms and not carrying them. NY stores will likely stop selling firearms and ammunition. Carmen R.: That is it probably R. Carmen R.: Please note, that when we stop carrying some item it is no longer at the store or online. Carmen R.: For the moment we do not have information that the RUGER firearms will be no longer available. n R.: I apologize for the misunderstanding. to bad I was almost done Christmas shopping in one stop.
  15. some folks with lotta extra time.' a guy once complained to my grandpa that he thought his own hounds weren't that good, grandpa said its because you make too much money, if you were poor youd be doing nothing but running the hounds and theyd be great, you don't run them because you have money to go other things.... lotta thinking too much on here too...I was guiding a guy shooting crows once and it started to snow, he dead serious asked me if he should change choke tubes and if the snow would effect his pattern...less talk, more do
  16. nothing on sale here, scanned prices are shelf prices. we still have a lot of tourists here and they were hoovering up the reloading stuff in wally world like someone just said the dam had bust....what gives?
  17. they shot the first bulls that came in so that was a nice fast trip. everything was still in velvet and lots of bears, LOTS. the guides are still in there--- I'm going fishing, my wife says we are going fishing so I must be. my elk tags aren't good until thurs and its still too hot to go shoot anything if it's farther away than my mailbox.
  18. I prefer Goex if I can get it, maine powder house is the best place we've used him for decades. free shipping on 50 pounds. Though this year he isn't answering his phone or returning emails, I hope he's off fishing and not closed or something bad happened. I have many flintlocks and some percussions but that 62 cal fowler built by Ed Rayl is one of my favorites, I'm weeding them out as I go, my view now is if I didn't build it or I don't use it at least once a month it's going.
  19. Finally packed and heading in, see you folks later
  20. I wouldn't worry about the altitude I'm at 6,400 and change and the late frost whacked the apples here too at the neighbors place, there are a few wild recruit apples around 7,200' asl and they aren't doing anything either this year. though the neighbors never had so many apricots in decades, so what's bad for one thing is good for another.
  21. Bull and a cow came out just as I dropped folks off fresh from the airport, perfect timing. Crappy photo but any closer they'd have left
  22. thanks ZEM I was going to tell you some places to go fish, I know the area, in the campground where they put in the bulkheads is where my familys homes where, they moved us all out of tht spot in the 30's to create that campground. up the creek is where we moved and where I was born and I took my first steps, they expanded the campgrounds and burnt that house the year my father died. Bass were introduced in the 50's by the state to entice more sportsmen as black bass fishing was the rage then. my father was used in one of their ads showing him in one of our boats off the dock 10 feet with a hugely bent rod and big smile, the rod was bent using a cement block and they had him pull it in and out several times almost breaking the rod. speaking of advertising,, I don't know if eagle claw still uses it on their hook packages but the guy smiling in a fedora is Dick Davis, he caught a willow branch full of specks (brook trout to southerners) and a guy said hey, hold that up! and took his photo, this was in Canada, they took down his info and that ws that. next thing Dick knew he was on their advertising and they had colorized the photo and made the fish into rainbows, Dick was given lifetime supplies of eagle claw gear and wore eagle claw clothing all the short time I worked with him building rods at Orvis, when I left orvis in the 80s Dick was still there making rods and had been there 52 years or more without ever missing a day. he was a wealth of information not just on making split bamboo rods either. I only knew the eagle claw story because I finally asked him why the eagle claw shirts all the time? did orvis have a tie in with eagle claw? and he told me anyway, I can tell you places to fish back home if you should return there. there are many waters that never get above 58 degrees all year, and you may get a kick out of sitting at an old house site or spring house having lunch after fishing.
