In a new spot for the afternoon. Gorgeous creek bottom with lots of trails and sign. Big field of sprouting winter wheat behind me. I've been told not to come in here due to poison ivy. There's tons of it. Glad I'm not allergic lol. Culver, sorry for the lost deer.

In my climber this morning. Nice and chilly with a light breeze. Had a yote go by a bit ago. I have a couple of scrapes nearby and lots of trails. Looks to be a good spot.

Yesterday I ended up staying home in the afternoon to get work done around the house. I am off of work today, so Ill be headed out shortly. Im gonna try a piece of state land that I havent hunted in quite a few years. It butts up to a standing corn field, so I am hoping to bust them coming in or out of the corn.

How Stupid do they "Think" we Are - Deer Hunting Aids
WNYBuckHunter replied to wztirem's topic in General Hunting
Maybe the thought behind it was if you blow back at them, they will come closer out of curiosity? Sounds like a horrible call to me though. I hate that noise. -
Thanks for the idea. Since we have moved into the new house, he has been given a spot in the living room, and we named him, so my fiance is getting used to him. I dont think it will be long before I can stop offering Hank up for sale.

Had action yesterday, missed a basket 8, saw a giant across a field, absolutely zip today. Im gonna try some state land near my new house this afternoon.

In my new stand this morning. So far nothing.

If you get the Super Sportsman, you get both as well. Sounds like they just got a Big Game license, bow license and DMPs.

Theres usually a zipper on the front of the bottom part of the blind. You unzip it and climb in.

The wind has picked up this afternoon and the stand is swaying at times. I am hoping to see some action besides the squirrels birds and field mice in the next couple hours.

So far I had 2 does at 70 yards go by. Then I had another come through at 15 yards being followed by a grunting basket 8. I took a shot at the 8 but buck fever got the best of me and I shot under him. When he took off a big buck that was just out of my view took off across the field. He was well in the 140s possibly pushing 150. I almost fell trying to watch him run away. Bummer. Maybe ill connect this afternoon.

I figured I would start a thread for guys with smartphones to post from the stand. Real time info should be fun.

Im headed out to my stand in just a few. Good luck everyone!

I glass areas I dont have permission to hunt all the time. Not because I would ever trespass or poach the deer, I just like seeing whats around and I enjoy watching deer. I cant say everyone has the same intentions or lack there of, but you shouldnt automatically assume just because they are watching deer.

Its opening day, Ill be in my stand period.

Some of the many that have vanished
WNYBuckHunter replied to bleonard's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Nice bucks. Remember, many bucks spend their summers in one area and then leave those areas before the rut. Dont give up though, they might wander through or still be around. -
Ill get plenty of sleep. Ill be in bed before too long here so that I can get a good nights sleep and be alert in my stand.

So I stopped at Gander Mountain tonight to pick up a set of knives I saw on sale and I had nothing better to do so I was walking around the store. I was pretty surprised to see a bunch of guys looking at rests, reading packages of broadheads, etc. Come on, you are seriously buing stuff like that the night before season opens? I saw one guy getting a new rest put on and "tuned". I hope he is heading to an indoor range to at least get a few arrows through that tonight and his first arrow shot with it isnt at a deer this weekend ??? . I also was in line behind a guy with 2 bags of Acorn Rage and a big jug of C'mere Deer. Um, you cant look at me with a straight face and say you are taking it out of state to use. Im not dumb, that stuff will be on the ground in NY tomorrow morning. I felt like taking pictures of him buying it, loading it in his white Chevy Tahoe and the plate number so I could send it to the DEC. I am simply amazed at these "hunters" and poachers that I saw tonight. They are the ones giving our sport a bad name because they take bad shots with untested equipment and break the law by baiting deer.

Good sparring shots! They will be full on fighting in a couple of weeks!

Help make NY a higher quality deer state
WNYBuckHunter replied to Santamour123's topic in General Hunting
See, this isnt necessarily true either. Ever notice that many big bucks are taken during late season? Deer become easier to pattern after the rut, when they are hitting the food sources to recover some of what they lost during the rut. In my opinion, you cant just move gun season to after the rut, you have to shorten it significantly as well. Most states that produce large numbers of big, mature bucks have very short gun seasons.
