Spooking Does and Fawns - Can it Ruin Your Chances?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
Well , if this is true , then there’s something to be said about taking the “ right “ way into your stand to minimize kicking something up . Oftentimes , the shortest Easiest path may not be the “ best “ e.g. : traipsing straight thru the field cuz it’s an easy walk May not be as prudent as skirting around thru the woods and approaching from downwind , even if it takes twice as long . -
A Deers greatest sense:Sound or Smell ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
I agree with that sentiment but all depends upon the individual deer and the envt it’s accustomed to . In a big woods setting where they don’t smell humans that much , if at all , probably would see a far different reaction by them. -
I was Reading an article in NorthAmerican Whitetail this am About spooking does , small bucks and fawns that are not being targeted by the hunter . essentially, the author maintains this is a no - no and can lead to burning a spot due to body language differences displayed by said spoked deer that is then detected by targeted bucks. I’m not sure if that matters as I’ve spooked plenty of does on my way in/ out of my stands and still saw deer afterwards . Certainly , it should be avoided as much as possible , though as spooking deer is never a good thing ; I’m just not sure if it will end up ruining your chances , though . What do you think ?

A Deers greatest sense:Sound or Smell ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
What do you guys think of the sneakiness factor in terms of sound? I know Ive mentioned this before, but being right before the opener for rifle, thoguht I'd resurrect again. A guy who taught me alot about deer hunting about 10 yrs ago- my Guru, if you will- told me once that when you are going into your stand in the aearly am in the dark, dont try to "sneak" too much, as it puts the deer on high alert. Dont try to be noisy either, he said, just walk normal, like a hiker, cuz if you try to be quiet, it scares the bejesus out of em. And since your walking in the dark, you cant really be THAT quiet anyway, you might as well just get there ASAP the best you can. What do you think of that assessment? -
A Deers greatest sense:Sound or Smell ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
But again, it depends upon the nature of the sound, its distance from the buck and how they react to it, right? -
A Deers greatest sense:Sound or Smell ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
But how does it necessarily know that what they’re smelling falls in the danger category ? -
A Deers greatest sense:Sound or Smell ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
I think It’s situational , too . I mean , if you’re hunting in suburbia where human scent is all around them then , perhaps They become accustomed to human smell and don’t rely on that sense As much as a deep woods buck would ; rather , they may just worry about sneaky , furtive noises and movement in order to decide whether to high tail it or not . Otherwise , if they’re running every time they smell a human , they’d be running everyt which way all day !! -
Political humor

No doubt - hope it holds !! -
I’ve only seen deer once or twice between the hours of 10-2 with a gun in my hand - very unproductive IMHO.

So I’m reading the ancient Van Dyke tome “ Still Hunting” (1883) and I was rather surprised that he posits that A deers sense of hearing is actually A more impt defense mechanism than smell ! In all fairness , he stresses that both senses are vitally impt , but believes hearing Trumps smell-why ? He cites observations of bedded deer being kicked up in great haste while he padded their he brush nearby softly , feet clad in leather moccasins designed for such skulking thru the woods . I tend to agree with the notion that they may exhibit a more alarmed response when hearing danger approach as opposed to smelling them , because if the latter is true , they’re more likely to just sneak away as opposed to run away in haste - therefore the hunter might never even know they even kicked up a deer in the first place . What do you think ?

Same here man- I feel ya. I just came upstairs after shampooing rug downstairs to get the musty smell out- sucks.

Correct, but just because one identifies, for example, as a woman does not biologically make them a woman. If you are biologically and anatomically a man, you should not be using public restrooms deisgnated exclusively for women. If you have sex reassignment surgery concomitant with hormone therpay, then no problem.

Snort Wheeze as an attactor call ?
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
Yes, probably, because when I think of a "snort wheeze", I'm thinking of thst distress/alarm call they make- bucks and does alike, mind you- when theyre alarmed, amd its sort of a warning to other deer that danger approaches. Weve all heard it , im sure, at one time or another while traipsing thru the woods and kick up a deer along the way. -

Congrats my friend !! She is beautiful - you’re so lucky -
Just reading my latest Game and Fosh issue and was reading an article about calls - author states that a snort wheeze can be An effective attractor call in certain situations . I thought that was a warning / distress call !! When could you ever imagine that call working to actually draw a buck closer ? Anyone ever use it that could explain ?

Guys, I'm thinking of setting up somewhere near where I marked the black x on the pic- what do you think? I'm wodering if maybe i should be a little higher and to the left so I can see the high side also; problem is, then my view of the lower may be obstructed. What do you think? Thanks

Ill give you 2 ways , although I'm certain theres more: 1)His administrations incredibly unfriendly Energy policies that have forced us to become more relainat on foreign suppliues, yet again (under Trump, we became energy independent and were actually a net exporter). 2) Inflation caused by myriad factors, but most of which is due to his exorbitant tax and spend policies
