Right--but as grazers. I think they would struggle in NY up in the Adirondacks now in most places , due to the fact that there are few open areas with suitable grazing habitat. So, the original eastern Elk herd in NY must NOT have been a grazeing Ungulate, correct? They fed on alot of Mast like Chestnuts-- probably Acorns and Beechnuts also-- and browse probably during the winter, much like Whitetails.
-
Yes , that makes sense; perhaps this is part of the reason why reintroduction efforts have been unsuccessful— Because they’re using western Elk.
-
I’ve read that they’re more of a grazer type undulate than white tails ; that’s why the western herd continues to do ok cuz there’s more open space areas. Do you know if they’re separate species or not ?
-
So you’re saying that the decline of the American Chestnut was the major contributing factor that led to the decline in Elk populations in the East? I feel like the elk pops started to decline first though , quite awhile before the chestnut did , isn’t that right ? Also , was the chestnut a major food staple for Elk ? Not saying you’re wrong , I just don’t know ; do you know if that’s so?
-
Interesting hypothesis that may have some merit, but chestnuts were obliterated much later in the east than Elk- I think around 1920s or so- whereas Elk were done by my mid to late 1800s , right? Not that there couldnt be a correlation there, but there are other factors more impt IMHO. Like most species that have been extinguished, my guess is overhunting and habitat destruction were the major factors here--what do you think?

I realize this is a very old thread, but have done a little reading about Eastern elk and thought might be worth resurrecting. Does anyone know the major differences between eastern and rocky mountain Elk? Are they considered the same species, yet separate races or different species altogther?

I have seen them in Sullivan county multiple times over the years; I think they’re fairly abundant down here .

That’s interesting ; is the old Kenwells place one of the Great Camps ? I’d like to find out more about it .

My Grandfather used to say that unions are a necessary evil—and I am a form believer in that Point of view . The unions — like many man made institutions — were conceived entirely with good Intentions during a time when workers had no protections; however , with time , they became corrupt , too demanding and WAY too greedy . That all can be reformed and in many ways , has recently as the pendulum has clearly swung in the other direction against the unions . I shudder to think of what would happen though , if unions were to fade away completely — would we go back to the good old days of hard core crony capitalism ?? Hope that doesn’t happen!!

Hey Guys, So I went out to check trail cams today, and ended up finding a VERY HEAVILY used deer trail . Turns out my spots were too far in and I should have stayed a little closer to the stream!! Anyway, I explored the trail in both directions , and ended up moving both of my trail cams to — what appeared to be — good spots along the trail. Trail seems to N S fairly consistently and is roughly 100-200 yds from the stream. I followed in one Direction all the way to the stream — and the road— but next week , wanna follow the other side more extensively ; see where it leads me !! More to follow soon , hopefully with some pics !!

Yes , sounds right , except it was Lincoln —not Buchanan— President at the time and who authorized the resupplying of the fort -

Correct . The Rebs informed the Federal govt they must surrender all Occupied federal forts By a certain time located within Confederate territory and if they refused , they would be taken by force . Lincoln refused At Sumter and the Rebs attacked — and took — the fort. -
You should check out Mudpond ; people camp up there all the time but it’s un designated . Little bit of a hike to get in there though .

Why do you say? I didnt think he was implying that at all. I believe was just making a comparision between confederate and Vietnam War memorials to get your take on the difference between the two, if any. Also, by what standard would the Vietnam Veterans be considered losers ? When you say that about the Confederacy, I believe youre referring to the fact that they lost the war, which they clearly did (and Thank God they did too). But did we (i.e., The US) win the Vietnam War? We clearly did not. But does that make the Vets who fought in the war losers? I guess that question--and comparison-- could be considered equivalent to Confederate Vets as well, wouldnt it? The Confederate Vets experienced loss on the battlefield, whereas the Union Vets did not. Can you say the same thing --completely in terms of wining/losing of the conflict-- about Vietnam Vets?? I think that you can, without referring to ANYBODY in the pejorative as "Losers". -
You know, your seemingly profound anti-farmer bias seems kind of inconsistent--and maybe hypocrtitical--considering that youre the same guy thats always posting those condescending inane anti-confederate flag memes ( as if anyone on here needs to be lectured by you about how wrong racism is and was , and what the confederacy stood for , in general). Yet, you BIGTIME hate on native farmers--So, whats up? Do you not like farmers for some reason? Do you see them as perhaps racist or something? Or is this all an anti-south thing? Honestly, just trying to figure out your stance--and apparent positions-- which often appear to be contradictory. That may be just me and my interpretation being way off and if so, then my apologies, but clarification would be great if you wouldnt mind please.
-
I said that? Where did I say that? Please show me!! I think your making too many assumptions here. My point was that your focusing on farmers as the sole or major "villains" in this travesty is a bit misguided --well, to me anyways. All I'm saying is that I can empathize with them--huge labor force thats cheap, and they work hard!! It is illegal, of course and wrong, but I understand why some of them make the decision to hire them --if and when they do,. that is.

I dont know if its loaded with American " Communists" per-se', but Socialists...definitely. Maybe youre right, IDK, but I doubt its really communists anymore. I mean, even the Chinese--governed and completely controlled by the Chinese communist Party--know pure Communism in terms of economic policy doesnt work and is not sustainable. Theyve implemented significant reforms since the 80's and now allow free amrket enterprise in order to achieve growth. The closest this country ever came to having Communists control the govt was when FDR was in power and also, Barack Obama. FDR was an unwitting fellow Traveler commie Dupe and " Barry" a secret admirer of the system and also, Fellow Traveler but too lazy (and incompetent)to actually attempt to implement it in America (thank God!). As for Joe Mccarthy, Ive done extensive reading about him ; suffice it to say, he was a much maligned figure whos credibility and reputation was completely and unfairly destroyed by the media and certain elements of the government at the time IMHO. In later years , this man was vindicated and was right about many, if not most of the people he accused of being communist spies. A good book pertaining to this topic by Diane West lays it all out--check it!!
