Speaking of butchering King's books - did anyone see the Dark Tower movie? I heard they messed that up badly. Too bad. I almost never go to the theater, but am considering it. Maybe the second time is the charm.

I don't bring much of anything during short sits. I sit all day during rifle season. Then it's coffee very early, big thermos of tea, small thermos of soup.
-
I'm not seeing it IMO. I had redtails as pets as a kid.
-
Red-tail, but not a huge one. The braiding is a good clue, and the tail doesn't look narrow to me.

Where are those plots?
stubborn1VT replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
One of the cereal grains might do a better job of building up the soil and crowding out the ferns. If you do go with the clovers and brassicas, I would seed in the ballpark of 10lbs of mixed clover and 5-7lbs of brassicas. The clover would do much better with a nurse crop like oats or wheat. Good luck, whatever you do. -
I think it's great. Some high school girls in Pennsylvania did the same thing and everyone freaked out. Guess some people are funny about homicidal clowns. One of Stephen King's finest books. It's about a heck of a lot more than Pennywise the clown. It's about fear, small towns, growing up, friendship, imagination. Now I want to go read it again!

Good thing it only weighed about 10lbs! It might have ended differently with a coyote.

So why bring up the links? You're the expert. I admire your drive and focus when it comes to land stewardship. I still hate leaf blowers.
-
Not meant to be hostile Grow. It just seems you want to justify leaf blowing in any way possible. If it works for you, great. I truly hate the things. So you can say they prevent injury, skunk spraying or diabetes. You can "monkey-see-monkey-do" with Grant Woods. I get the concept, but I hate the method. Paving seems to the next logical step. If the trails are in the woods, then there will be leaves. If it's a park or college campus, then there will be leaf blowers and often paved paths.

I would be grumpy if my shoulder was jacked up too. I'm pretty sure the stupid part started with scoping stuff instead of using binos. A young man shot his hunting partner at dusk a couple years back. He thought he was shooting a coyote in a scrub field. Looking at him through a set of binos wouldn't have hurt him a bit. Maybe you're cool with people pointing a rifle at you. Most of us aren't comfortable with that. One of the local hunting clubs buys each of their youth members a pair of binos as a way of teaching them to safely identify their target. I'm sure you're infallible, but the rest of us need to slow down just enough to be safe.

That last part makes sense. It isn't worth it if you don't get to use it/enjoy it often enough. Plenty of variables to consider before you buy, but I think that's true of anything you're going to spend big money on.
-
Maybe you should consider paving your trails to avoid injury.
-
Not worried about disturbing the woods. Deer get used to tractors, wheelers, chainsaws, skidders. I personally hate the sound of a leaf blower that's all. Everyone should do what they want. Just saying that if someone catches me running one, they should put me out of my misery.
-
I have raked short sections of trail to my stands so that I can walk in quiet in the morning. If I ever run a backpack blower in the woods, during the season, I hope somebody shoots me.

I get what you guys are saying, but I feel you're being awfully literal with your take on "investment". I grew up with family land, and cannot imagine having to lease or worry about having a place to hunt. I'm not saying people should buy land in order to make money. I'm saying it's worth the money to own land, have freedom and peace of mind. I would never buy land with the though of selling it and making money. You guys can stick your dollars in the stock market, but does your 12% make you happy? I feel that owning land is a more valuable "investment" in quality of life, but what do I know. I'm just a farm kid at heart. Hell, I think that land may be one of the only things worth spending money on. To each his own.
-
If you can sell it very quickly for what you have in it, then how is that a bad investment? I'm confused again,
-
There are exceptions, and you decreased the value when you had it logged. If you strictly bought it for a quick investment, then it didn't work out. If you had an issue with the taxes and the deer hunting, then why buy it? I'm sorry it didn't work out, but seems like you're expectations may have been off.

Congratulations!

WASP Jak-Hammers. Been shooting them for 15 years or so. Never let me down. Durable. Fly like field points. I shot the 1.25" cutting diameter when I shot a slower bow. Now that I'm shooting a faster bow, I will switch to the 1.75" cutting diameter. I like the chisel tips after seeing the resulting broken bones. I'm a believer in heavier arrows and moderate cutting diameter broadheads.

I just walked through with a bag seeder before today's substantial rain. Like Let Em Grow suggested, you should use a very high seeding rate for this.

Land is something they aren't making any more of. Land prices aren't going down. How is that a bad investment? You buy land. You use it for hunting, recreation, firewood etc. It goes up in value over time. It's worth more than you paid for it. Am I missing something?
-
They will wait a little longer than normal. The energy is still in the plant, so it's not a total loss if they don't end up with much grain. It could make very good feed when chopped.

Thanks guys. The brassicas got 50lbs of triple 19 when I planted them, and some urea the other day. I have some 5-24-24 that I got for clover. I guess I could give it some of that. I don't have anywhere super close to get fertilizer, so I hate to make a special trip. It's a brand new plot, so I expected it to be a process. I would like to plant a bigger area, but it's not possible. I may just go with perennials. The oats are fine, I just didn't use a full rate. (20lbs instead of 30+) I was thinking I should go lighter because it was in a mix. Live and learn. I had time to lime, till, fertilize and plant, so that's when I did it. I don't have time for it now, but I'll overseed with more oats and triticale. That plot looks good, but I didn't crowd out the grass. Thanks for the input folks. I'll post a report in a couple weeks with my results.
-
Thanks Land. My plan is to overseed the brassicas with forage oats and some free triticale from the farmer down the road. I'll give the Fusion some 5-20-20 and call it close enough. There are plenty of does and fawns for now. I saw 11 deer before I left. They're welcome to anything I plant (except trees) but I'd rather not have 1/4 acre of bare dirt. I really like brassicas, but they don't seem to last in this spot.

I usually don't use anything, unless I need to take a leak.
