  1. some info has been posted on another site from (I think the SHOT group?) seems they have been negotiating with REED for over a month on this issue and finally walked away from the table when it became apperant that REED was not going to change their stance. This opens a whole new can of worms, there is info about sending letters to the govenor, the ag dept., and the list goes on.... they are actually trying to get the license of reeds revoked because of fraud, and asking that the government freeze their bank accounts. this is going to be very ugly before its all said and done, there will likely be a lengthy list of lawsuits both personal and class actions. its a real shame that they have completely ruined a show in a weeks time that has taken decades to build up.
  2. I have my own construction business and run a fishing charter business in the summer as well, I also haul boats for a local marina, work on a farm here, work on the family farm in Pa. when I can. build cabinets and counter tops. and most importantly have 7 grandkids to teach hunting and fishing skills.
  3. all I can say is WOW! its unreal the number of groups that are backing out of this show! and there is still alot of time before the show actually starts. last I saw almost 200 vendors have backed out not including all the celebrities that have backed out
  4. we went unscathed all day with the snow even though we could see the massive band on the lake about 2 miles off shore........ we just had to run downtown to check on someones house, WWWOOOOOWWWW is it snowing now!! 6" in 15 minutes, couldn't hardly see the front of the truck. Hope it doesn't keep up at this rate or we will need a periscope to look out side in the morning!
  5. while if you were, or are going to the show I can understand your situation,,,, but this exact note word for word has been posted on another site as well. there were folks there that said they would buy calls, now possibly trying the same thing here on this site also?
  6. The thing I wonder about the ammo deal is, how is this going to be done? is it like most shops now where you go in to buy a gun and the clerk calls the 800 nics# gives the info and then once cleared you walk out with the gun? If this is the way it will be handled with ammo I would suspect that the smaller shops would not even go through the hassle of selling ammo because it wouldn't be proffit friendly to them. what I mean is if this will be done via a phone call an employee is tied up while on the phone, if its a 15 minute call for a box of 50 .22 bullets how can you operate like that? this wole thing stinks of if we can't take the guns per the 2nd ammendment then we will just make it so difficult and costly to buy ammo people will just eventually throw up their hands and say they have had enough...... I am sure that at some point NY is going to close the loophole of crossing state lines to buy ammo.
  7. I hope your right Belo, unfortunatly in 3 years most people will have forgot about this, heck they blame the dreaded guns on the ct. issue, people seem to forget that Timmy mcveigh killed 168 people and injured over 800 more with fertilizer and deisel fuel... both can still be bought by anyone today with no background check.....
  8. Ken, that has got to be one of the prettiest peibalds I have ever seen, congrats!! truly a once in a lifetime whitetail deer.
  9. joe,, I'd bet that any non resident license would cost more than the $100.00 ny resident license..... so your going into unfamiliar territory, paying a higher license cost, room and board cost,,,, all for the hopes of killing a once in a lifetime deer just because of AR when there are just as many if not more mature bucks here? some people complain just to hear themselves complain. whats even sadder is hearing guys giving reasons to try and justify killing a young buck. I always say whats with the excuses? you had YOUR buck tag not someone elses right? you were satisfied with that animal right? you killed it legally right? so whats the problem???? Who am I to tell you what you can shoot? you paid the same amount for your license as I did, if your happy with it then I am happy for you. lots of people today have to work 6 days a week to make ends meet, both husband and wife have to work, one works one shift one works another so they can save on babysitting expenses.... the bottom line is some peoples lives don't revolve around hunting season and they only get a few days off to hunt and to limit those people to "bigger bucks" probably drastically reduces their chances to put some venison in the freezer. If they are happy with what they shot then be happy for them! for those of us that want to personally hold out for a more mature buck we can still do that without a forced AR across the board. the way things are going in this country and state antler restrictions are the least of our problems right now!
  10. the only thing thats going to suffer by doing that is the habitat and the animals. this is simply a knee jerk reaction just as was the crap that was just passed.
  11. when everything was great for me??? when did I ever say that? I stated personal factual information from personal experience because I was living there full time up until 1986. seasons, tags, equipment has evolved immensely since I started hunting making it easier to scout, and be more comfortable while hunting thus people spend more time on stand. here is a link to the PGC website harvest data. http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt?open=514&objID=625882&mode=2 some points to "ponder" in 1986 the numbers went from actual reporting to a "calculated" harvest from 85 to 86's calculated harvest the numbers doubled....... antlered havest has not gone up every year, 2007 harvest for bucks was actually 26000 fewer than in 2006. 2009 harvest was 14080 fewer than in 2008.. the figure that stands out the most in their numbers is present year of 2011 havest is 75,707 fewer bucks killed than in 2001. and overall deer harvest numbers comparing 2011 to 2001 149,814 FEWER deer killed in 2011 than '01. prior to I believe somewhere around 1990 PA was a one and done state for deer. thats ALL you could shoot was 1 deer. then they started the antlerless tag program where your back tag was the buck tag and antlerless tags were with the antlerless license. the seasons for deer were NOWHERE near those of today. when I started in 77 it was archery for 4 weeks ( no sundays) then the monday after thanksgiving for antlered deer only that ran for 2 weeks, then 1 YES 1 day for antlerless deer. then the day after Christmas for I think 2 weeks was flintlock with patched round ball only and archery. Then they started the bonus tags, extended archery season to 6/7 weeks (into the first 2 weeks of novembers rut) then gave us 3 days for antlerless season immediatly after "buck" season. now to the present configuration, 6/7 weeks of archery and crossbow ( hence the increase in archery stamps) a 1 week long antlerless season with any kind of muzzleloader in mid october. during the october muzzleloader season the thursday, friday, saturday of that week is antlerless season for jr&sr hunters with rifle. the monday following thanksgiving there is 5 days of antlered only season with gun. the "first" saturday of gun begins 7 days of antlerless with gun. then after Christmas its 2 weeks of flintlock and archery. but there are some special regulation areas that have antlerless season from mid sept through almost the end of jan. qdma will never work on a statewide basis! there are just too many variables from hunting pressure to habitat to available hunting land. its pretty tough doing it on 1000 acres with free ranging whitetails unless you have tons of money to spend on habitat and security.
  12. I am in agreement with those that have the stance of education vs antler restrictions state wide. I grew up in Pa. have hunted there every year since 1977. as most know there is an AR state wide with 2 different AR's. 3 points to a side and in the western part of the state a "3 up" rule. 3 up is you can not count a brow tine it has to have 3 points up top this includes the main beam so it can have 2 points up and the main bean can be broke at the 2nd point and its still a legal deer. with the implementation of AR's also came herd reduction (HR) which meant more antlerless tags,,,, well one thing is for certain in area's of Pa the hunters have decimated the deer herd! most state lands, national forest are almost void of deer, why? because hunters don't have to ask anyone to hunt there they can just park and go hunting thus "public" land gets tons of pressure. are there bigger bucks in Pa now? yes. are there more deer than 20 years ago? not by a long shot! is everyone happy? absolutely NOT!! if NY follows Pa's lead with AR & HR you can be rest assured that deer hunting as you know it today will not be the same. people that hunt for meat that don't want to hold out for a AR legal buck is probably going to shoot the first "antlerless" deer that walks by them. today they may be setting there with 2 antlerless tags in their pocket but when they shoot that 1.5 yo 4,6, or basket 8 they are done for the year. if they shoot a this years fawn they likely will go back to get another deer to get their meat quota so instead of shooting 1 deer and being done they are shooting 2 antlerless deer. a few things that I have seen with the current PA program. -far fewer deer seen per stand set, spotting, scouting. -with fewer deer overall and still a high number of antlerless tags the button buck kill is VERY high. tough to have big bucks when they are in someones freezer before they are 8 months old! -LOTS of posted signs going up, and more every year. when I was growing up there I'd bet you coulda counted on both hands the number of "posted" properties in our entire COUNTY. now you couldn't drive a 5 mile circle and find less than 10 parcels that are posted. -Greed, its unreal the me me me thinking of a lot of people! if they see a deer its gotta be killed. laws and common sense be danged they have 1 mission to kill that deer even with doe's. the well if I don't kill that small buck someone else will.... the only certain thing is if you kill it its DEAD it doesn't get a chance to survive the season. -Poaching, the number of poachings has increased, especially on bucks. Until they make it a deterrant financially its not going to stop. it would suit me just fine if the fine for killing a doe illegally was $5,000.00 and for a buck $100.00 per inch of antler! these measly fines they have today is noo deterrant to a poacher. also a 5yr license loss 1st offense and a lifetime loss on a second offense or for multiple kills when caught. -dissention between hunting groups, meaning those for AR and those opposed, there has not been ANYTHING related to hunting in the state of PA that has divided more hunters than the AR implementation. its a sad state of affairs honestly and I am sure the anti's are eating it up! remember the old saying united we stand divided we fall........ hunting is a priveledge not a right... it an be taken away and sooner or later the anti's numbers will be greater than the hunters numbers. -along the same lines is the decrease in hunter numbers for deer, people are fed up with not seeing deer, loosing spots to hunt, hunting on crowded state game lands etc. also youngter recruitment is down and getting worse, kids today are so different than when I was of hunting age, and coupled with lack of deer sightings intrest is lost fast with them. when I started hunting at age 11 there were only 2 kids in my entire grade that DIDN'T hunt, today in some places you would be lucky to find 2 kids that DID hunt. so to sum up my thoughts on this.....whats the answer? I honestly don't know. I do know that no matter the decision people on on side or the other is not going to be happy. hunter dissention and jealousy is already an issue around here and that needs adressing before all the other stuff. we are all in one of the biggest fraternities in the US.... the hunting fraternity, the biggest problem is we are our own worst enemy at times. I do know that if we want to hunt in the future we need to do something to get kids involved, without new recruitments all these other debates will be a moot point because there will be no more hunting. for those that think that will never happen,,, it has, is and most certainly CAN happen.
  13. doin good Pygmy,, been her a couple years just not alot of time to post on any site anymore.
  14. great responses so far. I live for spring gobbler hunting! find some Denny Gulvas videos, he is one of the most experienced and respected turkey hunters in the video industry although I am not sure if he is still making them. as far as decoys go if you feel you must use one use a hen, I do not use a decoy and I would NEVER place a gobbler decoy anywhere around me, I have had too many instances of guys sneaking in on my location to put a legal target out there in front of me! and don't for a second think that just because your on posted ground your safe! spring gobbler hunting is an audible sport, when that bird starts gobbling guys loose their minds and some think nothing of tresspassing! if they are so intuned with that bird gobbling and sneak in to the turkey sounds they are liable to shoot the first thing to move. Camo- you have to be covered head to toe, you are up against the best eyes in the woods! there is an old saying in the turkey world, a deer walks through the woods and sees a camod hunter setting there and thinks its a stump, a turkey walks by a stump and thinks its a hunter. keep movement to a minimum. grandad always said a turkey can see an ant crawling on a tree at a hundred yards,,,,some of the things I have seen them do he mighta been right! calls- there are hundreds of diferent calls out there, some good some not so good. when you buy production calls you get what you got, maybe it will sound ok but I have seen a lot of them that wouldn't make my vest! there are a good number of custom call makers out there that you may pay a little more for but you will be getting a hand made call from an experienced turkey hunter. they are not going to send out a poor sounding call. there is a guy up in watertown that makes a sweet box call, Tim Fralick TP custom calls. the box call is one of the easiest to use and learn, if you can get a handle on using a slate call you can get different strikers and have a whole range of call sounds. calling- don't get caught up in the calling like your in a calling contest, take the temp of the bird, start soft and sweet and if he likes it and is coming in let him come in, if you have to get loud do so,,,this is not something that a person can teach you it comes from experience. I have killed far nore gobblers with clucks and purrs than heavy yelping and cutting. turkeys can pinpoint sound extremely accurately! make 1 call they know your general vicinity, make 2 calls they know within 30 yards of where you are, you make 3 calls they will know what tree you are setting against! gun/choke/loads- this is probably one of the most important pieces of the puzzle! you HAVE to know what your gun is doing. you need to spend time on the range at measured distances with different loads and chokes. you want as many pellets in a 10" circle @ 40 yards as you can get. I have done a ton of work to my turkey gun ( and thats ALL it ever gets used for) and I spent a good amount of $$ on different loads and chokes ( I still have 6 aftermarket chokes from my experimenting days) But with all the work and different loads I have settled on the best combination for my set up 242 pellets in a 10" circle @ 40 yards. if your going to go with a stock choke or can only get adaquate pellet counts at 30 yards with the shells your shooting then keep that as your max range. you can use front & rear sights or a scope, I have a bushnell scope on my turkey gun because it shoots such a tight pattern and I gotta see their legs before I shoot. Do NOT skimp on pattern! you have got to hit them in the head and neck with as many pellets as you can! you can not body shoot them with a shotgun, while you may "get" one that way chances are you will loose more than you will get. scouting- probably one of the most overlooked but most important tools in turkey hunting! you gotta find the birds, I live in the woods from feb 1- june 1. also keep your findings to yourself, nothing ruins a hunt faster than getting to "your" spot and seeing someone else there that you told of a bird being there! I put the time and gas $ into scouting so I am not giving out free info.! patience/persistance- this alone has been the demise of many of my harvested spring gobblers, I do what I need to do when I have a gobbler on the hit list. I love hunting pressured birds! its not at all uncommon for me to be setting under a tree at 3 am waiting for daylight, and alot of those days I might not move till noon when I get up to leave the woods! But the whole time I am there I am paying attention to what the birds are doing. I have always said that every gobbler is killable on any given day you just gotta be there when he wants to play! Safety- FIRST and FOREMOST at all times! always set up defensively, against a big tree, rock, stump etc. just make sure its higher than your head. eliminate red, white, blue colors from your clothing including what is under your camo these are the target colors on a gobbler. if you hear something approaching always think its a hunter first, try to keep calm and keep your senses in check. ALWAYS verify your target. If you see someone approaching you do NOT try to wave them off,,, especially if you were working a bird!!!! they could be so far gone that the first thing to move to them is that turkey! call out to them! STOP TURKEY HUNTER HERE if they are that close to you that bird you were wokring is probably busted out of there anyway and even if not there is no turkey worth getting shot over. if you can hook up with an experienced hunter thats a good thing, just make sure there is a mutual understanding that if you go to your spots he doesn't go there with out you and vise-versa. well thats enough rambling for now, hop it was somewhat helpfull.
  15. great looking dog! there is just something about hearing a good 'tick treeing!
  16. looks good from here. nice deal with the cement floor easy clean up after hanging deer in there.
  17. some pictures of the outside. 18. thanks all, i will see what other pictures I have that I can post, probably over a hundred through out the project. the kitchen/ dining room floor is hickory. there is around 4700 lineal feet of knotty pine through out the cabin. there was a lot of prep work done and pre planning to make everything go together so quick with just my step dad, wife and I doing the biggest part of it, I did have a buddy help for 3 days with the framing.. my step dad is almost 80 but he hung in there though all of it. I was not planning on building anything this extravigant but with my fishing charters and construction work here I was able to swing it all and come out without dime one of a loan. we have gas wells on the farm and have our own gas hook up, so all appliances are natural gas, the gas fireplace will literally cook you out on a 2 setting as the place is so well sealed and insulated.
  19. I did not see a camps forum so I guess this forum will have to do. after building a new pole barn so we had room for more tractors my wife and step dad decided it was time to replace my old camp at the family farm in Pa. took 28 days total to finish it, what was supposed to be a camp turned into a small house! only have a few things to finish it up, I have the 3 drawer cabinet almost done that goes between the stove and refrigerator. and I have to put the reducer down for the hardwood to carpet transition. some pictures of the finished inside. master bedroom. [image]http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/reeltime/027-1.jpg[/image] bathroom. [image]http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/reeltime/026-1.jpg[/image] kitchen & dining room. [image]http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a367/reeltime/025-1.jpg[/image] the freshly finished cherry cabinets we build for the kitchen. 20. you might want to check with a warden on the safety zone laws, I know in Pa. the safety zone is 150 yards ( yes i know its 500' in NY) But in Pa the law is you can not hunt in, shoot into (even if outside the safety zone) trap, persue game with a gun or bow, drive game ( even if not carrying gun or bow) in a safety zone. the safety zone law in NY is not as clearly defined in the book as it is in the pa book, not that people abide by it anyway, its probably one of the most often broken game laws on the books. I could write 100's of entries of safety zone violations on our farm down home since we have been there. including the scumbag that shot twice at a deer that was standing in our barn yard WITH my 3 horses saturday afternoon!
  21. your right Doc, people do have to keep their minds engaged at all times! unfortunately not all do, some get lucky and nothing bad happens while others live with the results the rest of their lives. when I was teaching hunter education at the conclusion of the class I always ended with a closing statement to the class. you all have sat through this class, we as instructors have gone over firearm safety, hunter safety, and a host of other subjects. You have all taken and passed the required test. we as instructors can NOT set in the field with you to make sure you follow firearm safety, THAT is up to YOU! in closing just remember one thing, this is REAL life, its not hollywood, its not your favorite cartoon, its real life, once you pull the trigger or let go of the bow string there is NO calling the shot back!! there are no do overs, no retakes, so remember be SURE of your target and what lies beyond it!
  22. a little late on the reply but,,,, if those are the steps you are using be VERY carefull with them! I quit using the one piece steps about 10 years ago because they break. I had 1 break right where they ended the thread cutting on the shank, I figured it was just a bad piece of steel, well when I had another one break the same way and same spot I took them out and replaced them with the lag bolt styles. Luckily neither resulted in a fall. I have since switched over to climbing sticks, much safer, much more tree friendly ( and landowner friendly).
