  1. Where I hunt in NY, you can legally shoot a bobcat.
  2. I never hunted from a treestand in my life. Feel like its too constricting. You are stuck there. Whereas from the ground, you can quietly move into a better shooting position. More than 50% of the deer I have taken in NY, I saw the deer, then slowly moved to a better position, then took the shot.
  3. Maybe its different in rifle counties, but I hunt in shotgun county. Sitting up a tree would do me no good. It would allow deer to probably see me earlier. Rather be on the ground is small openings where once a deer steps out, I shoot.
  4. oh ok, didnt know people hunt from a tree with a gun. i dont get the point.
  5. For bowhunting I assume? You could definitely hunt that spot with a gun, sitting on the ground against a tree, with no blind.
  6. Exactly. I've said it once, I'll say it again. LEARN HOW TO ID AN ANIMAL.
  7. Mountain Lion? Please tell me you are all joking. A simple google search for the uneducated would show that Mt. Lions have long tails. This cat does not. Bobcats can get pretty big. My Dad got one 38lbs in Maine, and I know guys in Minnesota who get some over 40lb every single year.
  8. Not a bad price at all. There's a 3 acre property I would love to buy for $100K or less in Putnam County for hunting. The seller won't budge from $180K.
  9. 100 to 1? seems unrealistic. I hunt in Putnam County (3N). I dont see many deer, but I would say the buck to doe ration where I hunt is very close to 1:1 and thats with me and my Dad taking 30+ bucks combined in the last 25 years and 0 does combined. The most amount of does I ever seen together without a buck, where we hunt is 7 and that was like 10 years ago.
  10. I am not joking when I say this: I honestly believe me hunting on the ground with a crossbow is "more primitive" than somebody sitting in a treestand with a compound bow. If you compound bow hunters want to be considered "primitive hunters", then use a traditional bow and arrow, and if you want to hunt from trees, then climb up them and sit there (without a harness or tree stand).
  11. Fight it all you want.....everybody knows the truth: The question is not if, its when will crossbows be allowed in archery in NY?
  12. I know people who can shoot deer out to 100 yards with their compound bows, and elk out to 70 yards with them....I have a crossbow and wouldn't shoot past 40-45 yards.
  13. I dont bowhunt, so I guess thats why I never inquired.
  14. I love the Hamptons, full of cougars.
  15. I dont know of any lands in Putnam that are bow-only. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/recreation/recreation_maps.shtml Not one piece of land located in Putnam is designated as "Bow-Only"
  16. Ive had deer eating the bush I was sitting against on the ground. I could have reached out and touched them. Scent elimination had to have played a role.
  17. I always get in before light, especially opening day (45minutes before light), and I always sit on the ground. Those morning were the leaves are crisp and something runs by right near you, can freak me out....I try my hardest not to move.
  18. I didn't. Excalibur's website has an "arrow performance" section, which on has Ballistics > http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/content/arrow_ballistics and Arrow Selection > http://www.excaliburcrossbow.com/content/arrow_selection. Based on arrow selection, I use a 150 grain tip, 1994 excel string, with 200lb draw weight, and firebolts (417 grains), so I shoot at 302fps/ 85ft. lb. Then I went to arrow ballistics and to the chart for crossbows shooting 300fps, even though I shoot 302fps.
  19. Just my opinion, but $129 for these things make no sense. You could just buy good boots for cold weather. I have a pair of Cabela's Inferno 2000 boots, that if I remember correctly, I bought for around $150. I have sat sunrise to sunset in temps in the single digits and been just fine, and I am somebody who gets cold feet/toes very easily.
  20. Crossbow = I shoot 302fps, 85ft/lb. 417 grains. At 10 yards, 294.13fps, 77 KE At 20 yards, 288.37, 74 At 30 yards, 282.73, 71 At 40 yards, 277.19, 66 At 50 yards, 271.75, 65 As a yard stick keep in mind you need about 30 ft. lbs to completely penetrate a deer and about 50 ft. lbs. for moose.
  21. I use unsceneted toothpaste, it definitely works.
  22. Wish I could. I severely separated my shoulder in a snowboarding accident years ago. I can draw a compound bow back a couple of times. But not enough to practice and ethically hunt with it in my opinion otherwise I would have been using one for years. I bought a crossbow 2 years ago to hunt PA and now NY, to extend my deer hunting seasons.
