Like I said, my worries are not related to shooting distance. I was looking for some more tips on field judging these animals.
-
There is a range by me that is 200 yards and shoot very good groups. I have shot off a bipod, shot from sitting down, etc. I have shot coyotes up in Canada at over 300 yards. I am not worried about making the shot on a 200lb+ deer. Honestly, I dont think it takes much practice. I shoot a handful of times before a trip and never had an issue.

I am off to Wyoming in less than 2 weeks for a Mule Deer/Antelope combo 5-day hunt. It will be my first time hunting both Mule Deer & Antelope. I have been doing a lot of research on how to field judge these animals, but I know it will be tough when I get out there. I am used to hunting deer in Putnam County (3N) with a shotgun where my farthest shot is 50-60 yards and if I see a buck or 2 a season it was a good year. Out there, from what I was told, I will see many bucks each day. I am not concerned about the long shooting, bringing 2 Weatherby's, a .270Mag and 7MM Mag and feel very confident out to 300-400 yards. I am just really worried I am going to shoot something and then regret it when I see it on the ground. I almost hope I dont see a shooter the first day lol. I am hoping for a nice 4x4 with of at least 24" spread, though it would be tough for me to turn down any sort of non-typical. With regards to the Antelope, it appears even tougher to field judge. 12" compared to 14" is a huge difference.... Any last minute tips from those of you who have hunted out there?

I get buck fever as most do. However, It doesnt change depending on antler size. I get the buck fever before shooting a spike as I do before I shot an 8pt in NY or an 11pt in Michigan (my avatar)

The Johnson buck says 14 points, but looks like a 6x6, where are the other 2 points?

Rich Johnson Buck > http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/record-whitetail-bucks.html scored 180 1/8....could this buck break the NYS Record for Archery-Typical?

what zone is that, 3 what? -
Depends on the land, but Im pretty sure you are allowed to put your stand out 2 weeks in advance. I hunt 3N shotgun season.

Anybody get a buck opening weekend in CT? I know a few areas where you can legally bait, so there's gotta be some big bucks taken already.
-
Maybe you can rent out it to some college kids or sell it for $300K? Doubt you getting millions up there buddy. I guess you think we are joking or something? If so, see below. Took 2 minutes to research. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/567-Polly-Park-Rd-Rye-NY-10580/2118939990_zpid/ 34 acres for $19MM with an adjecent 10 acres lot for $9MM http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/Call-Listing-Mohegan-Lake-NY-10547/2117268865_zpid/ 30 acres for $19MM Oh and if you want a house included, heres one for you $30MM for 21 acres + House. http://www.zillow.com/homedetails/55-Springhurst-Rd-Bedford-Hills-NY-10507/33010296_zpid/

Not if you live in the middle of nowhere in NY. 180 acres around here could be $5-$20MM
-
Thats awesome man. I can't imagine shooting a B&C buck in NY without paying for a guide, etc. What about 3N, no whoppers for me? lol.
-
Wow, any guesses on score? He looks like a 7x7 right?

Come on man, it would never happen in our lifetimes. Just like guns, nobody is ever going to walk into every household in the world and take away each and every gun....like they say on ESPN, COME ON MAN! Too many more important things to put decent thought to than arguing about why you should be able to big sodas lol. Lets argue about crossbows in the archery season or baiting in NY or why 2 buck tags isn't enough for me! -

I will stay out this one going forward, but honestly....who cares? you can still drink as much soda as you want, etc. Once no stores sell the big amounts, everyone will forget about the days when you could buy bigger sizes. -

I dont follow politics at all, but I dont mind this law. I work in NYC and I see millions of obese people everyday. I'm sick of looking at fatties! As long as I can still order 22oz. beers at Happy Hour, I'm happy! DOWN WITH THE FATTIES! -
You see yotes in open fields in Putnam? where at?
-
I wish! Anytime I call for delivery, they always say 30 min-it. It ends up being 45minutes.

Bobcat taste good. Not as good as Mt. Lion, but still good.

It borders the 8 acres my Dad and I have hunted for 20+ years. It's a 12 minute drive my parents house and 35 minutes from where I live. We have more bucks killed combined on these 8 acres than years hunted. There is no food sources around, except for the occasionally acorn. If we owned the 3 acres, we could put a small food plot, etc. Additionally, it is board approved for a 5BR house. Someday it would be worth much more than $100K anyway.
