"3N - gets an F - 50 hours time spent 2 deer spotted" > I disagree. Me and my father each took a buck during shotgun season in 3N. We each could have used both of our DMP Tags each if we wanted does. Lastly, I could have used my late bow/ml tag with the crossbow on a doe if I wanted. So the 2 of us could have harvested a total of 7 deer in 3N easily, without hunting many days. Yes, some of this was private 8 acres in Carmel, but I hunted Lockwood Unit (Watershed Property) for less than 3 hours 10am - 1pm on Saturday 12/17, and saw 2 does and a spike. Also saw a ton of deer hair by the parking area there, so its safe to assume several deer were taken out of there during archery and shotgun seasons. I saw 2 ladder stands, etc.

Instead of driving 5 hours back to where I hunted back in early November (Clearfield County), I did some research and I will probably try SGL 180 in Pike County. Looks like they have some food plots there, etc. You know anything about this land?

Too last minute to book a hunt down in Alabama. I talked to quite a few outfitters and spending over $2K for everything for only a 50/50 chance to get a buck, just doesnt seem worth it to me right. None of the outfitters really stood out in my opinion. However, I just happened to check the Pennslyvania hunting seasons and they have a late archery season! 12/26 - 1/16. My unused buck tag from November can be used. So I did some research and found some state land right off route 84, about 1 1/2 hrs away only on the NY/PA border. This piece of state land has 2 food plots, etc. so I might give it a shot after the new year. I talked to a few people who hunt PA and said the woods are empty in January and then if I got to the food plots, Id see deer. We'll see..... Will bucks still have their antlers?

anybody know about these guys > http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/spo/2759190586.html or the Long Island January shotgun season for that matter?

what sucks about the late bow/ml season is that it only has 1 saturday and sunday in it. For people who only hunt weekends, they get 2 days.

http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/7274-biz-r-oworld-2011-ny-deer-journal/page__st__20 Saturday, 12/17/11 Hunted same private land in Carmel in the morning. Got to my spot at like 615am, seen nothing by 9am, so I decided to try a slow walk in hopes of success like last time. At 920am I spotted 1 full size deer running on the other side of a stream from me about 150+ yards away, couldnt tell if it was buck or doe. Then I snuck up on a doe and a fawn within 30 yards. Passed on them. Middle of the day, went to Lockwood Unit (Public Watershed Hunting spot) in Carmel. Saw 2 nice big ladder stands. Is that legal to leave up on public land? Anyway, didnt see any hunters. I was just slowly walking around. Kicked up 2 does at around 1230pm, then 1240pm saw a spike. He saw me and was trotting by, i let out a blaaaaaaap, blaaaaap, and finally he stopped, broadside at 35 yards (my estimate), I put the crossbow scope right on him, and of course the only thing on him that was blocked by tree limbs was his vitals.....lucky guy, he got away. I would have shot him with a gun, but with the crossbow I didnt think it would have made it through the branches, so I didnt risk it. 2pm - dark was back sitting in my spot on the private land in carmel, and saw nothing. Last day of deer season for me tomorrow, will be hunting in Putnam Valley on private with one of my brother's friends....2 man ladder stand, it will my first time hunting out of a tree stand. Sunday, 12/18/11 Hunted out of a treestand (2 man ladder stand) for the first time in my life over a small food plot in Putnam Valley on private property. 615am - 930am, nothing. Went back in at 2pm. 330pm had a button buck at 30 yards, passed on him. 4:55pm as we were about to get out of the stand, had a spike come under the stand, but it was too late. Oh well, NY Deer Season is over for me this year. Maybe next year with the crossbow. Now its off to Northern Minnesota on 12/26 for a Bobcat (if they get snow!)

You ever shoot one? My Dad has hunted in Putnam County for 20+ years, and has only seen 1, and that was this year.

Agreed.
-
That's what I'll do on Saturday hopefully...thats probably why they didnt make crossbow its own box since within a year or 2 will be fully legal in archery season
-
I agree with you 100%! Its a shame that soon you will probably be able to shoot any type of animal within a fence, its stupid. To me, its the same as growing a monster trout or bass in your pool for a couple of years, then charging someone to come over and fish your pool, catch the fish, then brag about it..........PATHETIC!

I dont have my late season bow/ml tag in front of me, but does it have crossbow listed as a weapon used choice?

D.E.C. finally nailed my neighbors baiting

sounds like a bunch of f'ing losers.....good for you! -
haha, guess we posted the same time and feel the same way. For $5K im going to Wyoming next year and can shoot whatever size Mule Deer I want and whatever size Antelope I want. Both are pretty much 100% success rates on 100% fair chase, no fences, animals. This year the biggest Mule Deer went 184, id be more than happy with 154!
-
Is it fair-chase, no fences? Seems almost like a preserve to me? Gun Hunter 8 point with a minimum 16" inside spread 9 point or more with a minimum score of 160 inches A $5000 fee will be assessed to the guideless hunter who kills a buck which does not meet these minimum requirements.

Thanks! Already been to Texas for whitetail, want somewhere different. But anyway, I always thought late Nov. was best in Texas, thats when I went. Didn't know they had a January season. Also only interested in Rifle, not ML so that eliminates some states.
-
Doesnt have to be 8pt. AND 16", its 8pt. OR 16". What other states have open deer seasons in January? Im already going to Wyoming for Mule Deer/Antelope in October 2012 and paying a ton. Im just looking for something this January if I dont to Minnesota.
-
Yes, the places I have seen say 8 points or better OR a min. spread of 16". I see like you said you can take 1 or 2 does also, which i could care less about. I only care to hunt bucks. I'm just looking for something to fill the void if i cant go to Minnesota. Dont want to wait till March for my Canada Wolf Hunt. It sucks knowing I should be leaving in 11 days and now I might not be.

Anybody here ever hunt in Alabama in January? If my scheduled trip to Minnesota for Bobcat doesnt work out because of lack of snow, I am thinking about a last minute trip to Alabama to hunt whitetails with the rifle during their rut. I have never been there before, but have just touched based with a few outfitters who have openings. They are fairly reasonably priced, $2100 for a 4-day hunt. License is like $150. Anybody hunt down there or any other state in January for that matter? Thanks!
